Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Barbara Date: 01 Feb 09 - 11:01 PM My old friend from Sausalito, Minette, lived on a houseboat and played concertina. Her cat, a considerable hunk well named McCavity would begin to yowl and howl whenever she started playing, and would go from that to clawing her legs, and attempting to attack the box and her arms if she continued. It was funny to watch, but it cut short the music sessions. She'd remove McCavity from the premises, put him on deck, and shut the door, whereapon he'd howl outside and "entertain" those in the neighboring slips. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Genie Date: 01 Feb 09 - 02:15 AM That's priceless, McGrath! LOL (Actually, she probably plays better than I did when I first started piano lessons.) |

Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: NormanD Date: 31 Jan 09 - 02:08 PM Allez Relou! When I started learning guitar a few years back, our cat, Mister, was the harshest critic. As soon as I plucked a note, he would pick himsef up (even from the deepest sleep) and walk contemptuously out of the room. Can't say that I blame him. Cats apparently have very sensitive hearing. I tried to tell him that I was playing steel strings, not cat gut, but no use. |

Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Charmion Date: 31 Jan 09 - 10:52 AM "Cat in guitar case" is an entire genre of domestic photography, right up there with "naked baby on rug". Bill the beast (20 pounds and counting) will crawl into my lap while I'm playing the mandolin and shove his hind end right under the edge of the instrument. He seems to like the vibration against his lower back. He doesn't like me to be reading from a tunebook, however; if there's one lying beside me on the arm of the sofa, he'll fling it off. I guess he disapproves of dots -- a folkie snob in fur. Who knew? |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: VirginiaTam Date: 31 Jan 09 - 01:53 AM My Squeaky was always very interested when I played guitar too. She was usually right in the middle of it. Little paws up on my knees, taking swipes at my strumming hand or at the strings. Come to think of it, she enjoyed walking along the piano keys too, especially when I played. She didn't like me singing in the shower though. Thought I was in distress. She would march up and down outside of the tub mewing and occassionally peek around edge of curtain at me, complaining loudly. If I put my hand outside the curtain she would lightly take it between her teeth and pull. She didn't mind my singing when I was not in the shower. She didn't mind me showering if I didn't sing. It was the combination made her think I was in trouble and needed rescuing. |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: GUEST,iancarterb Date: 30 Jan 09 - 10:54 PM Genie, ditto on the open instrument case. I have pictures of a cat from 30 years ago in the guitar case, and a Current Occupant in the mandolin case. This one likes to climb up on my lap via the adjacent chair when I play the mandolin, but I've never seen the like of that video:). THanks- Carter |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Genie Date: 30 Jan 09 - 09:18 PM I think the concertina could be a source of concern for any critter with a tail, Charley. So far, I haven't found any of my cats taking advantage of my strumming to get some free stroking. However, on many an occasion if I left a guitar case open or gig bag unzipped I soon found it inhabited by a feline. G |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jan 09 - 08:49 PM Very nice, Genie. My cats are sometimes intrigued with banjo music but mostly they like to snuggle up to me while I'm playing. They don't seem to appreciate the concertina. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: JennieG Date: 30 Jan 09 - 07:14 PM Our lovely late lamented ginger cat Belle (who crossed the rainbow bridge in the middle of last year) hated my guitars. As soon as she saw me with a case and/or a guitar she would head for the hills, not easy when one is an inside cat at the time. And as soon as she heard a noise from the guitar strings she would find somewhere even more inaccessible to hide. The two remaining cats don't mind it at all. Critics.....I scorn them! Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Genie Date: 30 Jan 09 - 03:36 PM I should think various creatures might be drawn to a rhythmically moving hand. ; ) Genie PS, I just learned a new (well, really, pretty old) word: "beshiting" I think it's a keeper! |
Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Ebbie Date: 30 Jan 09 - 01:42 PM That is so funny. Wish the camera angle had allowed for the cat's face when s/he/it stretched out its neck. My dog likes music too but my cat, archy, (as in 'archy and Mehitabel')twines and winds himself around any player as well as trying to climb into my lap to share the space with my guitar. You suppose it's the rhythmic motion of the hand that attracts them? |

Subject: RE: Why cats like guitarists From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 30 Jan 09 - 09:27 AM On lute strings cat-eaten' Thomas Master(s), 1604- 1643 Are these the strings that poets feign Have clear'd the Ayre, and calm'd the main? Charm'd wolves, and from the mountain crests Made forests dance with all their beasts? Could these neglected shreds you see Inspire a Lute of Ivory And make it speak? Oh! Think then what Hath been committed by my cat, Who, in the silence of this night Hath gnawn these cords, and marr'd them quite; 10 Leaving such reliques as may be For frets, not for my lute, but me. Puss, I will curse thee: Mayst thou dwell With some dry hermit in a cell Where Rat ne're peeped, where mouse ne're fed And flies go supperless to bed Or with some close-pared Brother, where Thou'lt fast each Sabbath in the year, Or else, prophane, be hang'd on Monday For butchering a mouse on Sunday 20 Or mays't thou tumble from some tower And miss to light upon all four Taking a fall that may untie Eight of nine lives, and let them fly. Or may the midnight embers singe Thy dainty coat, or Jane beswinge Thy hide, when she shall take thee biting Her cheese clouts, or her house beshiting. What, was there ne're a rat or mouse Nor buttery ope? Nought in the house 30 But harmless lutestrings could suffice Thy paunch, and draw thy glaring eyes? Did not thy conscious stomach find Nature prophaned, that kind with kind Should stanch his hunger? Think on that Thou cannibal, and Cyclops cat. For know, thou wretch, that every string Is a cat-gut, which art did spin Into a thread; and now suppose Dunstan, that snuff'd the divel's nose 40 Should bid these strings revive, as once He did the calf, from naked bones, Or I, to plague thee for thy sin Should draw a circle, and begin To conjure, for I am, look to't An Oxford scholar, and can doo't: Then with three sets of mops and mows Seven of odd words, and motley shows A thousand tricks, that may be taken From Faustus, Lamb, or Friar Bacon 50 I should begin to call my strings (My catlings, and my minikins) And they, recalled, straight should fall To mew, to purr, to caterwaul From Puss's belly. Sure, as death Puss should be an Engastranith; Puss should be sent for to the King For a strange bird, or some rare thing, Puss should be sought to far and near As she some Cunning Woman were, 60 Puss should be carried up and down From shire to shire, from town to town Like to the camel, lean as hag, The elephant, or apish nag For a strange sight, Puss should be sung In lousy ballads, midst the throng At markets, with as good a grace As Agincourt, or Chevy Chase The Troy-sprung Briton would forgo His pedigree he chaunteth so 70 And sing that Merlin – long deceased Returned is in a nine-liv'd beast. Thus Puss, thou seest what might betide thee - But I forbear to hurt or chide thee For maybe Puss was melancholy And so to make her blithe and jolly Finding these strings, she'd have a fit Of mirth, nay, Puss, if that were it Thus I revenge me, that as thou Hast played on them, I've played on you 80 And as thy touch was nothing fine So I've but scratched these notes of mine.
