Subject: Rambling Jack on the box! From: Will Fly Date: 31 Jan 09 - 11:28 AM Good to see Rambling Jack Elliot on Folk America just now. Last time I saw him was around '64 at the Free Trades Hall in Manchester. He was part of a duo - t'other one was Daryl Adams - and top of the bill was the Rev. Gary Davis. Jack hobbled on with his leg in a huge plaster. He was very, very funny and he and Daryl did a great act. The Rev. was definitely The Man though... |

Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: GUEST,Dave Hall Date: 31 Jan 09 - 12:38 PM I saw him a couple of times in the '60's at The Peahen in St. Albans where Maddy Prior was a resident singer with the St. Albans Ceilidh singers. Donovan used to hitch from Hatfield to St. Albans and was only allowed to sing during the interval as they were rather traditionalists!! I saw him on the box recently saying that he hadn't heard of Bob Dylan yet I remember him singing Dylan songs, I'm sure. I was singing with a group from Potters Bar called "The Folklanders" at that time. Happy days (daze) I loved Rambling Jack and was also surprised to see him on Folk America last night. Great entertainer. Dave |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: Will Fly Date: 31 Jan 09 - 01:39 PM Jack told a story where he was travelling in a car with Bob Dylan and a recording of Woody Guthrie came on the car radio. Jack said to Dylan, "You sound just like Woody" to which Dylan replied, "Hell, Jack, you sound more like me than I do!". This during the Free Trades Hall concert. With appropriate accents and impersonations - all done very well. JE and DA made a great duo. Other people on the bill that night were Julie Felix and Buffy Sainte Marie. Not a gig to forget... |

Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: NormanD Date: 31 Jan 09 - 02:02 PM Ramblin' Jack was on UK tv a bit a couple of years ago, when he was given the BBC Radio 2 "Lifetime Achievement Award". It was good to see him, though his singing was way past its prime. And he did do that album a few years back containing some duos with fashionable musos like Tom Waits. Good stuff. Long may he run. And ramble. |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: oombanjo Date: 31 Jan 09 - 02:02 PM I have just checked this thread there were some good old timers on the programme and not in the least Tom Paley who still supports Old Time Music over here in the U.k..I don't know If he will be at the FOAOTMAD gathering in Gainsborough this Year February 13/15th but he has been there many times in the past. What a debt we owe to him and others who keep Old Time Music alive .I also find it quite it a coincidence that 10 minuets ago I was playing and re learning "Come all you starry star fish living in the deep blue sea" From a tribute to Derroll Adams. And then the first thread I check out on mudcat has a reference to him . Cheers and keep music live.Oombanjo |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: Bluegrassman Date: 31 Jan 09 - 08:15 PM There is a good story that the great Eddie Walker tells about Hamish Imlach and another guy who were tasked with collecting Rambling Jack Elliot, The Rev Gary Davis and two American female backing vocalists from Glasgow airport in 1964, probably for the tour that Will Fly mentioned. Having had a few drinks waiting for the plane Hamich`s mate asked him how they would recognize the foursome and Hamish said something like "keep your eyes open for a black preacher, a cowboy with a wooden leg and two red indians", or words to that effect. |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: Will Fly Date: 01 Feb 09 - 04:49 AM LOL! Great story. I wonder how Julie F and Buffy SM would have liked being called backing vocalists - though Buffy was indeed a Cree indian. |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 01 Feb 09 - 11:53 AM It was absolutely great to see Tom Paley on both progs so far. Takes me back to old days at the Enterprise, Haverstock Hill with him, Ken Loveless, etc etc. Tom still looks exactly the same! I remember him doing several floor spots when he was learning the fiddle around 1975, hope he's got it right by now! Sorry Tom. What was Rambling Jack's real name? Eliot Adnopoz or summat? He is a cool bloke. |
Subject: RE: Rambling Jack on the box! From: Jim McLean Date: 02 Feb 09 - 04:10 AM Bluegrassman, the 'other bloke' was Josh MacRae and Jack had a broken leg, in plaster. The 'American Indian' was Buffy Sainte Marie whom Danny Kyle called the Running Buffy. |
