Just watched the first of a new series "Old Guys" from BBC Scotland. They have used Ivor Cutler's "I'm Happy (and I'll punch the man who says I'm not)" as the theme tune - and mentioned in the credits as well! Five more programs - Saturday nights @ 9:30pm, BBC One.

Ross

Ivor's influence reaches out from the grave.

That was a weirdly edited closing chorus of Barabadabada (from Jammy Smears) on the closing credits. It occurs to me I don't have Jammy Smears (the third of his 70's Virgin trilogy) on CD, must sort that out (lots on ebay just now).

Nothing very Scottish about Old Guys otherwise though, which I found a bit odd from BBC Scotland, who (allegedly) pulled the plug on the eminently Scottish Still Game...

Still Game could always make me laugh no matter what mood I was :)

In a past life we used to use candidates' reactions to Ivor Cutler as one of the selection criteria for employment in our school.

Very effective.

Cheers, Rowan

Rowan that's not fair, you didn't say whether the criterion was "Hire him/her - they're a fan!" or the other way round.

Or if you used "Grats for Tea" as the test piece.

A man with a hand like a hammer.
Was hanging a portrait of his wife.

The earth meets the sky over the hill.
I was told by a sparrow with a lump on his head.

Just 2 Fave quotes.

Ed, we'd invite them to a gathering where socialising, drinks and music were the go; "meet the mob", in short. Then we'd put on Velvet Donkey or Jammy Smears (or both, even); if they showed signs of a complete lack of comprehension we "knew" they would find it difficult to cope with the students at our school, let alone the rest of the staff.

Cheers, Rowan
