Agreed - there's more good music around in the folk scene, and more varied good music, than there ever has been in my lifetime. Much better than when there were more people interested in listening to it, ironically enough.

Hey snail.... nice one, maybe we can bury the hatchet then with all this joyfulness in the air!

I'd add: Sara Grey, Zoox, Sarah McQuaid, Edwina Hayes, One Stone.... and a few others to the great music list. They're all not half a mile from my house in 2 weeks time. Just need a few more friends to enjoy them (and some singing/ playing) with and life will be just about perfect!

I had a mass outbreak of happiness last night at the Royal Hotel Dungworth, with a whole rake of people.

Fantastic night and just the antidote to Sheffield United losing at home to Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the day for the first time since 1967 and the Wendies doing the double over United for the first time since 1913.

Can I opt for Spleen Cringe's list (particularly the hugely underrated Jon Loomes - great great guitarist, better than good on a range of other instruments, intelligible singer who delivers the sense and fire of a song, splendid deliverer in a harmony pissup (I'd just so like to have him and Tom Lewis and Tony and Leslie Petty and Mike Nicholson and Peter Collins oh, and the Pettoes in naughty boy's corner at Miskin if it still happened just for the craic) - and can probably drink the rest of us under the table?

Not so sure about the "happiness" bit - English folk music is the story of a thousand years of opression, exploitation, rape, incest murder and betrayal, much like what ever UK government since let's see - about the 50s - ever since Anthony Eden was betrayed to Nasser by the yanks - has done to us.

Some of the current music is great (love Jackie Oates material for example) but may we be allowed to enjoy being miserable please?   

Oh, Lizzie, if you see Reg Meuross socially (that's not a snide, I don't know if you do or don't but he is from around there somewhere), let him know that the Hagstrom J-45 I bought off him (ebay) may be going to Kris Dollimore (at least on trial again) - and he will appreciate its remarkable sound. Google Kris if you want to know more about him.

Folk rockers... trad singers... nu-folkers ... songwriters.

Some of them on the folk club scene, some playing art centres, some organising their own gigs, some out in the big bad world... some doing all or more.

A healthy number of sessions and singarounds. Hell, even a load of thriving folk clubs. A buzzing festival scene. Ceilidhs by the bucketful. Some fantastic albums. EFDSS on the up and up.

Sometimes all you seem to get from the UK folkies who come here is pissing and moaning about how rubbish things are and how its not like it was in my day and its all a stitch up and yaa yaa yaa... here we go again.

I'm starting this thread in order to beg - vehemently - to disagree.

Things are bloody marvellous.

I love the soundtrack to my life and its getting better all the time.

Glass half full? You bet. And its a great big glass.
