Subject: Obit: Matt Armour - RIP From: The Admiral Date: 09 Feb 09 - 01:10 PM Sad news, I've just received the following from John New of the Great kNight Folk Club Northampton.... Dear Friends It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that our friend Matt Armour passed away this morning. Matt had been ill for some time and had been undergoing tests for a serious illness. I have been told that he died suddenly, so it is some small mercy that Matt did not have months of suffering. Those who knew Matt recognised him as a giant on the local Folk scene and he was one of my mentors in the early days of the Great kNight Folk Club. It was always good to see him and hear his music - and his big hearty laugh! My poor words are not enough - I shall miss the Big Man! I have very many happy memories of his club and his warmth and humour - including a freezing snow-bound New Year's Eve when he went out in the winter weather in a kilt with the bare legs, which didn't stop him dancing all night. He'll be in some good musical company up there in Heaven. And he will live on down here through the beautiful songs he wrote. Generations of Change is sung a lot in these parts. Now his season has turned too. Going to pour a drink now and raise a parting glass to Matt. There's no face-icon sad enough. I first came across Matt when I moved to Woburn Sands in the late 70's. He was a bit of a 'godfather' in the North Bucks Folk scene then and I don't think he was keen at first on a young upstart like me coming in rippling the waters. I started a Folk Club in Aspley Guise called the Hogsty, Matt ran the Songloft in Stoney Stratford and Drummond Davidson ran the club at Whittlebury we were all Scotsmen in fact the late great Hamish Imlach called us the 'Scotia Nostra'. I think there ended up a bit of mutual respect and the last time I saw him at Towersey he gave me a fine welcome. A fine songwriter and a 'big man' lost to the scene. |

A friend took me to the Vaults Bar in Stony Stratford one Sunday. I sat in one of the vacant seats and this big Scottish chap in the corner said `If you are going to sit there you will have to sing'..., I only knew one song at the time, but that didn't matter, every one was welcome..,. Matt was a one off..., a few years later still in the Vaults a group of us who enjoyed singing thought about forming a group, we were looking for a name and `The Five Men not Called Matt' were born, I think Matt was slightly bothered about what we were going to do but gave us plenty of encouragement and I know he enjoyed being the one called Matt when we sang together at the Vaults.. Subject: Obit: R.I.P. Matt Armour From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 12 Feb 09 - 11:41 AM Sad news for any of you who knew or knew of Matt Armour. He was taken from us on Monday by an aneurysm. His wife Jane was with him at the end. Ironically (and Matt loved an irony)he had only recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. Matt was a big man with a big heart and a smile to match, and as well as being a greatly respected songwriter was responsible for fostering many fledgling musicians (me amongst them) at the folk clubs and sessions he had been running for the last 40 years or so in the Stony Stratford area. His contribution to the music cannot be overestimated and he will be sorely missed. If you've never seen or heard him take a look at his Myspace page for a brief flavour of the man. |

There had been problems with the sound system and we started a little late. Knowing how tight the schedule was, Matt cut short his own set so that the next act could start on time and the rest of the day would be back on track. I played a bit at school and university, but only in the bedroom, and I didn't know much and I wasn't much good. I'd decided to have another go, and I relearned some stuff I'd known years ago, and got books and things to learn new stuff. My goal was to get good enough to be able to perform in public to a decent standard - one that gave the audience some respect for their time, and made me feel reasonably satisfied. I'd known about a monthly sing-around session in Stony Stratford for a little while and got to the point where I though I'd give it ago. I did OK. At that session, someone told me about a weekly Sunday lunchtime session at a nearby pub, so I went along to that, which was where I met Matt. He welcomed me, encouraged me, punctured me when I became complacent, and generally gave me a place where, week in and week out, I could try things out in supportive company. He'd been doing that for 25 years when I started. I'm not great at what I do, but I'm much better than I would have been without the Vaults Bar on Sundays, and Matt Armour, in the chair, ruling with the proverbial iron fist in the equally proverbial velvet glove. I only knew him for three and a half years, but I'll always be grateful to him. I'm sorry he's gone (especially for his family), but I'm glad it was quick. I wouldn't wish the long decline that might have been on him or anyone. And he was there, the day before he went, at the Vaults, in the chair, doing what he did |

I remember the first time I encountered him, when Tony called on him to do a song as the session moved around the room, simply saying, "Matt?" As he stood up, someone near me mentioned his surname in passing. I then remember thinking, "Blimey, you mean the Matt Armour?" Just a couple of weeks earlier I'd heard Generations of Change for the first time and been completely enthralled by it, and had felt amazed that such terrific songs were still being written. Who was this Matt Armour bloke, I'd wondered? And there he was, large as life and twice as nice. For shame I can't remember what he sang that first time I came across him, but I do remember a lovely man; unassuming, kind, warm and wonderfully always "just one of us," even though it was clear that his particular talents stood head and shoulders above most of the rest of us. He's left us a wonderful legacy, and would that any one of us could have done as much. |

Matt was then running the Fox and Hounds club at Whittlebury and soon to front the "folk" face of the (in those days pioneering) WAP - the Wavendon Allmusic Plan founded by John Dankworth and Cleo Laine in the converted former stables of their house. Matt was a tireless organiser, a fine songwriter with a truly colossal repertoire and a mighty voice and presence, as well as a great friend to many local musicians booking us regularly at all his venues in our various incarnations! I also spent the most awesome Hogmonays of my life in Matt's company..as far as I can remember. Our paths diverged a few years ago but Matt Armour leaves a massive gap in the folk scene that is hard to see being filled easily. Love and good wishes to Jane. Bob |

Lovely lovely people - Matt was a delight - talented, pithy, very funny - but mostly remembered because he was so nice. I remember seeing him in his full Scottish evening wear and he cut quite a dash. Sadly, in recent years, Jacobite Day was cut altogether and we were forced to reduce the number of performers at the Maritime and we had to forgoe his company. I know that he worked extremely hard and was (rightly) very proud of the events he staged in Stony Stratford. He always signed off his communications to me 'Love and cuddles, Matt' He was a great man and will be sadly missed by many. Sincere condolences to Jane. |

The journey from mentor to friend doesn't end with his parting, but I am going to miss him terribly, there is a hole in my heart that now needs filling, and they only way I know how is to keep the music flowing until I to complete the journey. Our heartfelt condolences to you Jane and to all the family. Sadly our paths haven't crossed much in recent times, but we remember you both fondly. Matt was a big man in all ways, particularly in character and gave us such encouragement and friendship when we were younger. Great memories of Edinburgh Folk Festival, Wavendon, Stony Stratford and Whittlebury are still with us now. Matt's big songs live on with us and many others who love to sing them and listen to them. As we can only imagine, the last few weeks have been difficult for Jane and she has not had the opportunity to visit the web and see the any of the lovely tributes to Matt (and herself)and the effect they had on our lives. Last evening at dinner, she was presented with the Memorial Book signed by the many people who attended the funeral and the subsequent sessions.(thanks to my partner Kate, and Mary & Steve Johnson for organising this).In addition, the many pages of this thread and the tributes from Matt's Myspace site were included for her to read at her leisure. We will continue to monitor this thread and include further tributes so they can be incorporated into the Memorial Book Similarly, Jane has not had a chance to read any of the many emails that must have sent as yet. A huge thank you to you all for the words, they mean so much to Jane and the family. |

I was an attendee, with my sister at the Cutty Wren in Totton as a teenager, and then left folk for years til I moved to Milton Keynes, and everywhere we went to watch, listen or occasionally sing, there was Matt. He was INVOLVED in the living tradition, in a way that touched so many. It is with sadness, that I read of his passing, but with great joy and thanks that I met him, that I will remember him and the positive impact he made on all who met him. Thanks Matt. I was an organiser of folk nights in the Mid-Bucks area around 1972 and Matt never once said no when I asked him to come along. I remember introducing him once at Winslow Folk Club as the ' doyen of the local folk scene ' How old was he then? I got a lovely warm letter from him when I got back in touch in 2008 and bought one of his CD's. I will treasure it as a souvenir of the Big Man. |
