This Thursday,10th Feb, at the University of Hull at 5 PM there is a free public Lecture, called All You Jim Crow Fascists!Woody Guthrie's Freedom Songs It will be sung and spoken by Will Kaufman of University of Central Lancashire who is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and a fine singer. It takes place in the Leslie Downs Lecture Theatre, Ferens Building, Map Of Hull University

"ALL YOU JIM CROW FASCISTS! WOODY GUTHRIE'S FREEDOM SONGS, explores Woody Guthrie's anti-racist songs and activism. Conventionally known for his championing of the poor white Dust Bowl migrants, Guthrie also left an extensive body of songs condemning Jim Crow segregation, race hatred and racial fascism.

Most of these songs were never recorded, but they are the legacy of Guthrie's own personal transformation from a casual Oklahoma racist in his youth to a committed civil rights activist working and singing with the likes of Lead Belly, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee and Paul Robeson in the 1940s and 50s. It is at once a harrowing and uplifting legacy, reflected in such songs as 'The Blinding of Isaac Woodward', 'The Killing of the Ferguson Brothers', 'Harriet Tubman' and 'All You Fascists Bound to Lose'.

"a freewheeling excursion into the music and social vision of one of the most important of American singer-songwriters.Woody Guthrie's songs are brought back to life by Kaufman's virtuoso performance.
This is an event not to be missed."

WILL KAUFMAN is a Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of Central Lancashire, England. He comes from a musical family - his brother, Steve Kaufman, is one of America's most celebrated bluegrass guitarists. In 2008, Will was awarded the Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship from the BMI Foundation and the Woody Guthrie Foundation.

"Woody wrote literally thousands of songs, and they're known all over 'the other America.' I thank Will Kaufman for introducing a new generation of Europeans to this side of the country. It's a wonderful job he's doing." (Pete Seeger)

"Will Kaufman's performance is a brilliantly entertaining and informative musical 'tour' around Woody Guthrie's America. With sparkling humour and excellent musicianship he charms his audience and makes Guthrie's work come alive—as relevant and hard-hitting now as it was for America in the Depression." (Dr Nick Selby, University of East Anglia)

"Out of the thousands of academic presentations I've listened to over the past 25 years there are only a handful which I would have paid good money to hear, and this is one of them." (Paul Giles, Professor of American Literature, Oxford University)

Enjoy, Geoff Lawes
