OK, I haven't had a chance to post for a day or two, but I've been follwing the thread.

My one regret on Saturday night-- I didn't get any desserts! Which was probably a good thing for my waistline... but Tricia, who made them all, is an extraordinary chef and baker whose food is always filled with lots of love.

And yes Joanne, it was a treat to hear Glen Reid again.

It's amazing to me to read this thread and realize all the ways Rick helped connect people to each other, and all the ways he helped steer many of us on to new things. Jeri, I remember you getting up and playing a song at the memorial concert at the Tranzac - to me that was a beautiful illustration.

Well, I'm sitting here with a few tears and a wonderful sense of the rightness of love in all it's many forms. It's a piece of Mudcat at it's best combining gifts and talents and helping the stories be told.

Well, I got about 11 hours of sleep last night and had to fight my to consciousness this morning, and I'm feeling better.

I thank Lillian for her words about the song I wrote and Mick sang, but know that it wasn't just my writing.

Too much information:
I'd sent the words to both Rick and Mick. When I went up to visit Heather after Rick died, she handed me his song book and asked, 'Did you write this?' I know Rick had been working on it at some point but dropped it when he got sick. He'd edited it a bit, and I later sent his edits to Mick, and he finished it, writing a tune and a couple of bridges.

See, I'd given it to Rick and Mick. I didn't think Mick was going to do anything with it and Rick was gone. I don't know that I ever would have gone near it again.

Mick, you're a selfish bastard. I acquired Heather's cold. Two month and two colds for me. I can only wonder if that was something I also shared with you.

The concert was full of music, but also quite a few stories. Other folks mentioned that, and they also said how appropriate it was.

I asked Grit if I could have his guitar, and he said 'no'. He also indicated he didn't mind my asking. I think he recognized it for the compliment I intended.

There WAS a story (by John, I believe) about a guitar. About him playing it and Rick asking 'Do you want to take it with you?' years ago, and that he never returned it.

The overall impression I got from the night and all the stories and songs was that, if Rick ever affected someone's life, he did it big. He did it so big that those people are out making difference in other people's lives... and so it goes.

Here is what Lillian Wauthier, who "instigated" the concert said about it in an email to the participants:

Last night's special celebration, a tribute and memorial to Rick Fielding, was a most incredible and magical concert. It's hard to find the right words to describe it....one of my volunteers said to me "what MADE that night was Rick" and that's absolutely true; it was all about Rick and I think that many of us are where we are today because of him.

A huge, heart-felt THANK YOU to all the phenomenal musicians who gave of their time, talent and generosity to give us an outstanding performance. Thank you to Tony Quarrington Mose Scarlett, Wendell Ferguson, Grit Laskin, Bill Garret, Crabtree & Mills, Eve Goldberg, Glen Reid, D'Arcy Wickham, Chris Coole, John Zytaruk, "Pineapple" Frank Barth, Bill MacLean, Bob Cutler, Marianne Girard, David Woodhead, Liam Jones.

A special thank you to the out-of-town musicians - Ron Jones who came from Vancouver, Mick Lane and Tom Verlin from Michigan and Matt Watroba from New Hampshire. [Editorial note: that should be "Matt Watroba from Michigan" - Mick]

Thank you also to visitors from afar - Patricia Sibley from Vancouver Island -she put together a beautiful collage of photos of Rick and the memories collected from his friends and fans - and Jeri who came from New Hampshire; we heard her beautiful love song for Rick and Heather sung by Mick Lane. I think there were several other out-of-towners in the audience as well.

Thank you to Heather Fielding and Steve Fruitman for their fine emceeing of the evenings proceedings. And thank you to all the committee and volunteers for their hard work and a job well done.

Thank you to Jason LaPrade (Crystal Clear Sound) and Dave Lang for the great sound; they had a huge task and they kept the evening flowing smoothly. Thanks to Paul Mills who wore two hats - performing and recording the whole evenings' event. Thanks to all the photographers capturing the moments- looking forward to seeing some pix soon.

Finally thank you to Tricia Hurst for her luscious desserts!

It was so wonderful to have everyone together making such exquisite music and to hear songs commemorating Rick, as well as Rick's own songs, honoured so lovingly. It was quite overwhelming. How blessed we all are to be part of such a vibrant and caring musical community. Rick was one of the mainstays of this community and revered by his fans and fellow musicians alike. He was a brilliant songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, music historian, story-teller, leather artist...the list goes on. But above all he was a man who embraced life and everything about music; he was a patient teacher,
always giving of his vast knowledge, and he was a keen observer of people. He treated people well and earned everyone's respect and admiration.

And from the funny, insightful and heart-warming memories and stories told, it was obvious that Rick was an extraordinary man and musician who deeply touched, influenced and inspired the lives of a great many people. It was a joyous tribute to a man who was well and truly loved. He would have approved of, and been so pleased with, the synergistic energy and the grand outpouring of love....in fact, I think we heard him chuckling out in the
wings....

Mick, you are referring to David Woodhead. David plays many different instruments, all with a master's touch, but he does have a particularly striking approach to the bass guitar. You heard him playing A Thousand Thank Yous, which was written by the great Toronto violinist, Oliver Schroer, not too long before his untimely (and still very recent) passing. When David played Ollie's piece so melodiously and sensitively on his electric bass on Saturday night, it felt like a requiem for Rick - and for Ollie as well.

And Mick - thank you for your personal words of encouragement to me.

You are a pretty special guy.

You are another gift that we owe Rick for, Joanne. For those that don't know of Joanne, I urge you to take a listen to the CD's by Crabtree and Mills. One earful and you will be hooked. That was one of Rick's greatest gifts. He loved music and people so very much, that he hated to see either of them squandered. That is why he dragged Glenn back into performing, that is why he encouraged Chris Coole, that is why he encouraged Jed Marum, and that is why he stayed after you to start again. And guess what? We are all blessed with it because of this. We get to hear you all express your musical souls full of passion and beauty and wisdom.

Speaking of Chris Coole and Rick, I often am speaking to young musicians who think that speed is the essence of good playing. I always point out to them that the really great players develope speed, and then slow it down for beauty, and that the greatest beauty in music comes with going at the exactly right pace for what is being done. Often the best examples of a master are when they are playing a simple tune with amazing elegance. Rick's version of Ola Belle Reed's High On A Mountain is an example, in fact a prime example. When I sat across the stage from Chris, and the wonderful Eve Goldberg started that song, and Chris led off with that perfect banjo ....... my skin just tingled.

Was it Bill Maclean that did that amazing fingerstyle instrumental on the bass guitar? I thought Chet Atkins might have slipped in and was playing on a 6 string. It was magic.

Mick, you're so right. Paul and Bev are a wonderful team. I consider myself very lucky to be friends with them both - and of course, I cannot imagine a better musical partner than Paul.

During my own dark night of the soul, when I had concluded the musical stage was something that belonged buried deep in my past, Rick began exhorting me to get back out there. He urged me, several summers in a row, to come to the Woods Music and Dance Camp while he was on the staff. When I didn't do that, he began pressuring me to join Toronto's Friday Night Song Circle, and one night when Rick was playing at Toronto's Flying Cloud Folk Club, he intruduced me to Sue Goldberg and asked her to introduce me to the song circle, which she did.

That chain of events put me on the path to finding Paul Mills and the best musical collaboration of my life, and all because Rick would just not let me stay quit.

I know exactly how you feel about Glen, Joanne. Sitting next to this man was a joy. He is such a humble, decent guy, and such an incredible talent. You know Rick is a friend, buddy, and hero of mine, and Glen (as you said so well)was one of Rick's heroes. I guess that really puts him up there for me.

Was there ever a couple of better people than Paul and Bev Mills? I can't imagine it. I often say that I would have loved being a Canadian, because I love the place, its people, my friends and cultural base so very much. And a perfect example of why that iswould be Borealis Records. If I could think of one perfect reason why I would love to be a Canadian, it would be to be part of Borealis. In every event they are there, they donated a pile of CD's for sale and every Bluenose imprinted dime of the proceeds went to the charity.

To me, when I look up and see Paul Mills, Grit Laskin, and Bill Garret onstage, surrounded by the most amazing cast of players and singers ever ........ I know that I can smile and say, "I was there....".

Hello everyone.

What a privilege to be in the green room surrounded by such a concentration of my favourite musicians, and what a privilege to stay among them all, all night long. When I wasn't on stage, I was in the front row, glued to every song, every tune, every story. Normally, I have a pretty low boredom threshold, but I could have sat in that front row forever, absorbing all that love, love that was inspired by Rick and expressed through a four-hour flow of top-notch musical performances. Everyone touched me, moved me, spoke to me - but there is a special place in my heart for Glen Reid. I have been partial to singing cowboys all my life, and to my eye and my ear, Glen stands squarely and beautifully in that tradition. He is a humble man, and Saturday night he spoke gratefully of the ways Rick had helped him come through a difficult time. Now I happen to know that Glen was one of Rick's heroes. Rick was not a sentimental man, but on more than one occasion, he shared with me the deep and abiding love he felt for Glen Reid. Listening to Glen sing Lifeline to the Heartland Saturday night - a song Glen wrote, that Rick not only recorded, but named a CD after - hearing Glen sing that perfect song was my breaking point, the moment when I could no longer hold back the tears.

Rick's legacy is that he brought music to life inside so many people - and back to life inside so many others.

I was at the tribute for Rick last night. I had never met Rick in person but now I have... in every way!!!
It honestly did indeed feel as if he was there and remember I had never met Rick! What a privilege to meet him and know him through the love and the music shared by his friends!
These are moments from which the power of music manifests itself and then we are all reminded once again what brings us hope in a dismal world.
I had the dreadful task of having to announce at the door that there was no more room in the house available.
It was a night mare to see the crestfallen faces as people who had lined up for? (actually the first one arrived at 6:30 and the doors opened at 7:30) but many had to turn around and go home.
I know how many chairs we put up, I know how much came in the door $ wise but I can also safely say that neither the chairs nor the $ can attest to the # of bodies in the room.
My guess is there were between 225 and 250, standing against the walls, sitting on the floor, and on the tables, all there soaking up the love within the stories and the songs.What a colection of fine musicians on one stage!!
Truly a night to remember! I just came off the phone with Heather and she is still basking!
So Mick and Matt think the Toronto folk community is special? Well I cannot get over the Mudcatters as a community when I read the words of so many who were not able to come but were there in spirit!
WOW, I have been moved!!

It was a wonderful evening and I'm still taking it all in.

Thanks to Eve, Mick and Peter for trying to write about it, it was all they've said and more.

Now not to take anything away from Lillian, Mick, but she wasn't the only organizer, the credit for this goes to the whole committee of Lucy Bowers, Doug Campbell, Topaz Dawn, Jennifer Sutton and Lillian. Lucy should get a special mention because she was the instigator - is that what you'd call it Mick? The one who started it all happening.

The "wee red headed lass taking pictures" is Emma, sometimes a volunteer and sometimes Omie Lucy's conscript, but last night our official photographer. Her assignment was to take pictures of the musicians.

What can I say about the musicians. It was a wonderful line up to begin with but what made it so special is the way they all worked together: I think Bill McLean set the tone, he was Rick's bass player in the Acoustic Workshop band, and when he found out who was playing he e-mailed everyone to say "Hey, happy to work with you and what can I do". And suddenly it seemed everyone was sharing information.

I was in the Green Room before the show and all these performers were in groups here and there working out how to help each other. Eve got everyone together to work on the final song..it was teamwork from beginning to end.

I think that's all I can say right now. It was quite magical.

It was more than a nice touch. It was very moving. It reminded everyone there of the way Rick had of honestly moving people up a level. I had time while Mick was reading it to think about how he did that, and I think that the difference between his way of doing that kind of thing and other people's is that when other people do it, it is often just some kind of general exhortation -- oh, you know, be the best you can be, read this book on how to be better than you are -- but Rick would honestly tell you what your skills were and so when he said you could be better than you currently knew, you took it seriously.

It was Eve who said it best last night. He taught his students how to treat people, especially students who were going to be teachers.   I think it is this combination of honest appraisal, plus belief, that was his hallmark -- and Jed's letter made us all see that.

It didn't seem so important at the time, but the very first photos in the Mudcat gallery were of Rick's concert for FSGW in 1999, and I was in one with him and some other folks.
It was both a pleasure & an honor to know Rick and share talk & music with him.

Apparently, the line went up the stairs of the church, out the door and around it. I don't know that ALL the 'turned away' found a way in, but I did see a couple of them inside. I got there about 4:30 and until the concert was over at 1:30 (or so) AM, I sat down for maybe a cumulative 10 minutes. Every single performer was amazing, and if Rick could have decided the format, he would have done it exactly the way it happened.

For each set, the performers all sat on the stage and took turns. There was a backing band that was more incredible than most of us can dream of. The whole night couldn't have been better in any way... aside from maybe more chairs and room. I wonder how many people were there.

Two things:

The other thing is that the show was recorded and will be broadcast by CIUT at a time to be determined.

I have tried for so long to figure out why I love the folk community around Toronto so much, or rather should I say to figure out how it is that there are so many generous, giving, and talented people in one spot. Last night it became apparent what the answer to that is. There is a caring spirit in these wonderful Toronto folkies. Every last one of them, from the wee red headed lass taking pictures, to Lillian Wauthier the Organizer, to every last person working as a volunteer, to the last audience member, are a reflection of Rick's attitude of caring and teaching. Every last artist, from my phenomenally talented friend Eve Goldberg, to the incredible "name" performers such as Paul Mills, Grit Laskin, Bill Garret, Chris Coole, Tony Quarrington (I am a huge fan of this man), my buddy Mose Scarlett, Glen Reid, Joanne Crabtree (yep, I'm in love with her voice), Matt Watroba, to the most incredible house band I have ever seen, were giving and encouraging to a fault. I believe that Rick's spirit is alive in each and every one of them. His influence, and his voice, will be heard for many years. I am in awe of the wonderful community of singers and players, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be a part of their company as we remembered our dear friend.

Heather remains at the center of this community, and she walks it with grace and love. Having her in our world makes us all the better. I always leave her presence grateful that I could spend time with her.

Rick, my friend, I felt you there with us. I know you aren't happy about my accuracy on the instrument, you probably wish I would switch to the "country C", but you should know that I sang your songs from a place of love. I miss you every day, buddy, and I hope that your are in that celestial picking band you wrote about.........

As one of Rick's students of numerous instruments over the years, I was grateful to be invited to be part of the Tribute last night. I was extremely pleased at all of the performances and all the performers and the general turnout of Rick's fans. There were so many things I wish I had said but time didn't permit and generally they were covered by other performers. My biggest regret is that they did have to turn away people at the door, and several of my friends (and Rick's fans) were disappointed. My thanks to the organizers and to the audience, and my warmest regards to Heather Fielding.

That would be Matt Watroba, host of "Folks Like Us" on WDET radio in Detroit. He's a very fine musician, songwriter and singer, and a very very nice person to boot.

And Peter, if you want some help with those guitar chops you think you're losing, I know a good teacher in Toronto...I'm sure it would all come back pretty quickly!

Another report.....
The show was held at the Acoustic Harvest, which Rick helped found a decade or so ago, at the church near their house, in the basement. There was a long lineup to get in, and at one point they threatened to turn people away -- which was (ahem) mostly solved in innovative ways. In the end, people were standing. There must have been 150 people there or more wedged in. It was a happy evening, no one did anything too lugubrious. And it went on till 1 a.m.   
    Highlights: well, one highlight was Mudcatter Big Mick who regaled the place in his usual expansive -- is that the word I am seeking? -- style. He sang "Voices of Struggle" and then a song of Mudcatter Jeri's, which is a sweet song. It is more than ordinarily pleasant to see how many of Rick's students are, five years on, just getting better. (Slackers like me are deteriorating). Anyway, Mick just cheered everyone up. He also talked about a famous day in the Fielding's backyard when a group of us, for some Rick-centred reason, just bonded.
   Another of Rick's students , Eve Goldberg (who has just posted) did a very moving version of "High On A Mountain" , the last song Rick ever did. And her own signature tune "Watermelon Sorbet". And Paul Mills and Joanne Crabtree (I am going with Mudcatters here) did their usual superbery - and stopped everything with "Till I'm Too Old To Die Young". Joanne also did an especially moving job of "Over the Rainbow".   And many other people did tunes, like Glen Reid from up north; Chris Coole the banjoist; and Rick's old pals, Grit Laskin, Wendell Ferguson, and Bill Garrett. Matt Watroba(if I have the name right) came up from across the border, and was very complimentary towards the Toronto community, but even more winningly, did one of the loveliest songs of the night, Miss the Mississippi and You.
   Nice tributes flowed, especially about Rick's kindness, his belief in how much better people were than they thought they were, and his encyclopaedic knowledge. There were also some nice posters of photos of Rick's life and works.
The evening was designed to have a house band on stage most of the time (Tony Quarrington, Frank Barth and others) and a kind of laid-back set of musicians swapping songs, all of which were gobbled up by the audience -- who really didn't get out of there till after 1 am, just after a colossal group finale ("A Handful of Songs").
CIUT, the radio station, has promised to broadcast their recording of the show at some point.
Rick would have been pleased......mildly abashed, but pleased.

I also miss Rick and was able to make the first memorial house concert in Silver Spring MD by Jed an number of years ago. But I might be on the watch list for Canada, and could have been turned back at the border...

I wanted to just say hi to you all and tell you that last night's concert was amazing. It was so packed they had to turn a bunch of people away (people started lining up at 6:30 pm!).

The music was fantastic, the stories were funny and touching, and looking around the room you could see what a tremendous impact Rick had on the folk scene in Toronto and far beyond.

The concert went well past midnight, but most of the crowd stuck around until the very end. I think Rick would have enjoyed it!

Please note there were some changes in personnel after the first press release. 1) Matt Watroba will be joining the company. 2)Instead of Bill and Sue's duo, you will be entertained by the equally fabulous long-time duo of Bill Garrett and Curly Boy Stubbs, after which, Curly Boy will quickly morph into his alter ego of Paul Mills and do a turn with Crabtree&Mills.

I'm looking forward so much to Saturday night. Preparing for it has meant spending time with Rick's spirit in Memory Lane, and that has made the past little while quite emotional. When he was still with us in the flesh, Rick and I used to spend lots of time in Memory Lane together, swapping sordid tales of our shared past in the Toronto version of the sixties folk revival.

Being in the room and on the stage with Heather and so many who were Rick's friends, students, jamming buddies, colleagues (and for me, especially the guys who were in his wonderful Hugh's Room band during that fabulous weekly concert series) - let's just say I'm going to be struggling to maintain my composure.

I want to make sure I keep this up for the next few days so that any of you that are interested will know the important stuff. This is going to be a wonderful show, with groups of the finest singers/players/friends, sharing reminisces and songs. And the funds raised will go to a very important charity that assists musicians with health problems. Here is a description of that:

Now, about the funds. We are pleased to tell you that the funds raised will be donated to the Artists' Health Center located in the Toronto Western hospital. If you don't already know about this wonderful service please visit www.ahcf.ca The money raised will be specifically allocated to a Musicians' program to help local musicians with physical, emotional, spiritual and performance issues. With your permission, your names and websites will be mentioned on their website in recognition of the generous time and talent you will have given to this special memorial night to honour Rick Fielding.

Hi Mudcatters,

I was really pleased when Acoustic Harvest said they wanted to do a special concert to honour Rick. It's going to be quite a special event, the musicians have all been talking to each other and I think we may be in for some surprises.

We haven't worked out the details yet but we do want to record the evening and send it out into the wider world. I'll let you know more as I know more.

One thing I am happy to announce is that the money raised from this concert will be going to help other artists. The proceeds will be donated to the Artists Health Centre which helps artists in all fields deal with the special problems caused by practising their art.

It'll be a hell of a night and I'd love to be there. Dammit, if I could find a way to be there, I would.

I remember with great affection the day that we traveled from the Wayland, Michigan offices of Lane, Fielding, Patterson and Swan, Layabouts for Hire to the Toronto office, then made music for about 2 1/2 hours and returned to the shores of Gun Lake. Good times.

All best to everyone going there to remember Rick, and to everyone here who remembers a generous, funny, talented man. We're the better for having known him.

It has become a requested one in my repertoire, and I sang it at both of the benefits for Utah Phillips.

custom leather work, and hosted the radio show Acoustic Workshop on CIUT-FM

Above all Rick was a giving person as a performer, teacher and friend. He is
