If totally totally no sound at all are you sure you have loaded the sound drivers - AC97 usually if onboard or for a specific sound card if youhave one. If you have a PCI sound card is the PCI driver OK? I have one computer that no matter what I do I can't get the stuff at the far end of the PCI bus to work, only the first three slots!

One time I had teh speakers plugged into the wrong hole, doh!

Try restoring your sound card's defaults.

What's your OS?

Also, is it really NO sound, or is it no sound in specific circumstances (like you get Windows sounds when you boot, but no sound when you're running an app like Media Player)?

Asking because my son recently had the latter problem, and I figured it out eventually (but I won't trouble you with the solution unless that's your problem).

Any or all of the following settings can be knocked out by viruses etc.

... You may already have tried this:

1. Double check that the sound is not muted:
start>All Programs>accessories>entertainment>volume control

2. Check under control panel>system>hardware>device manager>sound video and game controllers You should see an entry something like 'Soundblaster' or 'AC97'. This shows the hardware is installed OK. If there is a big yellow exclamation mark you will need to reinstall drivers.

3. control panel>sound and audio devices ...
double check that the device in(1) above matches the default device in the audio tab.

4. (phew!)
Check Media Player:
tools>options>devices>speakers ditto to (3)

Its worth sticking heaphones in the socket as well just in case your speakers are kaput ...

Because my PC became infected and overloaded I had it "cleaned out" and started from scratch. The only problem is now there is NO SOUND. I have checked in "Sound and Audio Devices" on the control panel. They all come up as working normally but none appear to be "interfaced" with computer. Neither is there any apparent option to activate the sound programs. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.
