Subject: Chat......How? From: Sharon Date: 27 Jun 99 - 11:19 PM How do I get to the new Mudcat chat? Someone recently said to click on the little blue thingy, but I just got an error message saying something about needing to update my cookie. Help, please. |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 27 Jun 99 - 11:38 PM First off, do you know if you have IRC? The IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. This will require a program to be used on your computer. For a Windows type machine, you would need to get either mIRC, or pIRCh. For Mac users, the program is IRCle. For unix enthusiasts (linux is one of those), you need IRC-II. How to get them? Well..... After that you can add to your server list (check the manual/instructions) the server www.mudcat.org Then all you need is to use the /join command and specify #mudcat as the location you want to join. |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Jo Taylor Date: 29 Jun 99 - 06:44 PM Sharon - I don't think you have to do all that. I don't have IRC. First reset your cookie - click on the 'reset cookie' link on the main forum page - then CLICK HERE (http://www.mudcat.org/chat/irc.cfm). Should work! Jo |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Penny S. Date: 29 Jun 99 - 07:02 PM I tried to use it, and got this message from my nanny: •The page contains material that might be offensive •The page may reside on a site that contains large amounts of offensive material, or does not screen the web pages of its subscribers. •You may have tried to search for a word that will bring up links to offensive material •The site offers unregulated chat facilities I take it it's the last that gives it conniption fits. It seized up the computer and I had to restart it, and reset the connection. Penny |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Bill D Date: 29 Jun 99 - 07:39 PM lordy! if your netNanny is set to refuse any connection to IRC because someone 'might' use ICR for offensive material, it is WAY too sensitive! (aren't there settings to allow the adults get around it and go anywhere they like?) |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Penny S. Date: 30 Jun 99 - 03:24 AM It is a school computer (laptop, and I'm ICT coordinator, so I get to take it home), and the service provider is an educational company, so the nannying isn't where I can get to it. There are a few sites I think it filters unnecessarily, and now I've got a good Cybercafe next door (almost), I'll check them out. (One Ancient Egypt site, for instance). I'm hoping no-one tells them about certain threads here! It doesn't filter search results, though, so (with my other hat on), a lot of stuff I wouldn't want children to know about can appear if search terms are too narrow. They can't get onto the sites, but could record the addresses for use at home. And odd stuff surfaces on ads in sites I wouldn't expect, (on Mars, for instance). I would like to have my own controls on this. And then I could get into the chat! Penny |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Tony Burns Date: 30 Jun 99 - 08:55 AM This just came to my attention. What a coincidence. |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Tony Burns Date: 30 Jun 99 - 09:11 AM Penny, From the site in my message above, here are instructions for temorarily disabling Net Nanny. (I bet the kids at school all know how to do this. :-)) To disable Net Nanny temporarily: Press CTRL, ALT, and DELETE simultaneously, bringing up the task manager Highlight "Wnldr32" and click 'End Task'. This will kill Net Nanny until the next time you restart your computer. After you restart your computer or restart Windows, Net Nanny will be running again. |
Subject: RE: Chat......How? From: Penny S Date: 30 Jun 99 - 07:17 PM Tony, that doesn't work. The filters are elsewhere. But that link reminded me of a Quaker site I found once which declared itself "Proud to be filtered by..." as someone had decided that it wasn't suitable for some libraries somewhere in the States. Funny, I can't find it now. Penny |
