Has anyone on Mudcat used Media Monkey to organize their music files? If so what is your assessment of the software?

I've used MM for several years now and find it a good program to organize music tracks. It can do lots more (especially the paid version) than just organize. Currently I have about 12,500 tracks and it handles these effortlessly.

I have the freebie and it's brilliant.

I can organise into so many different categories and it's easy to use.

The ability to have several playlists is invaluable, and it's so easy to transfer stuff to an external player (MP3, other drives....). I've had some trouble with old stuff duplicating when I've added new tracks but that could just be me doing it wrong.

Plus it's got a really happy little monkey face on it, which is much more fun than Windows media player.

Thanks. I have used the free version and am pretty much satisfied with that. I have been debating about the virtues of the paid version. I guess my biggest complaint is the sound level which is much lower than Windows Media Player.

There is that problem... I download classical music for concerts I do, and the volume in classical stuff is always much lower than any other music. Makes it a bit of a shock when Durufle has to be played at full volume and then it segues into Black Sabbath...

I have used it for 4-5 years. It is excellent. You can sort & catalogue and play by any number of ways. It will scan your drive for files...in any format YOU request, and present you with a listing.

Did you realize, Liz, that you can control & 'level' the volume for any track?

I'm a luddite at heart... so no. I'll look into it.. although it is useful as the classical stuff does tend to put me to sleep. And it is amusing to watch the people on the train when I suddenly jump and exclaim loudly!

I am now looking for an alternative to Media Monkey. I like the software for all the reasons given above, but the software has been "upgraded" and as is so often the case with an "upgrade" the software loses much of its appeal. The clean and clear opening screen now has unnecessary "features" that obscure the features I was using and I have ruined three CDs in trying to burn them. I guess I should contact the developers but have not yet. A newer version was offered a couple of days after the new version supposedly to fix problems and I will give it a shot, but if anyone is aware of other software, that organizes, writes tags, and burns CDs I would like to hear about it.

Well... nothing does 'quite' as good as MM in my opinion, but Foobar2000 is an excellent player, and will compile a database that operates much as MM.

I think there is one other, but it is my other PC. I will check later.

You might look at this list. I have only tried 2-3 'organizers'..(which are relational databases adapted to music files). I know several good players, but only MM and Foobar2000 have seemed like they allowed a good database setup.

Umm..you 'could' reinstall the older version of MM...

I used to use Media Monkey and I liked it, but I removed it for reasons that I can't remember now. Perhaps a susceptibility to a virus? I remember that I lost all the tracks.
What I liked most about it was what Bill D said, when playing back on the computer, you can/could set the volume level so that all tracks played at a compatible level.
I never found a way to rip a track at a set level into the library, or to export it at a set level, it just noted that the track was to be played '+3' or '-2' or whatever within its own system.

This was a couple of years ago.

I think I have solved my problems by returning to MediaMonkey 3.2.5.1306. Luckily I could find an older version. This version is the one I was used to and one which worked well for me as well as allowed me to burn CDs. I wasted four CDs trying to burn with the newer versions.
