Mr Happy, I understand that it's in/near Grimsby, which I've just looked up in the atlas and it's on the east coast of England. I'm looking forward to getting there and I'll probably take the ferry so I don't have the hassles of transporting instruments by plane. Don

The gathering will be in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire. It will be based in a Scout HQ in the Scartho area of the town.

If you put the "Scartho Fork, UK" (post code DN33 2LX) into Google Earth and zoom in onto the roundabout, you will see a driveway leading westward off the south-west entrance to the roundabout. The Scout hut is an L shaped building with car park in the top right hand corner of a square plot, behind the houses which line the road. The grassed area behind and to the side of the building is available for tents.

As I explained above, this was not my first choice but:

The new venue does not have as good facilities as the first one. There are no showers, I'm afraid, but there are toilets and a kitchen. Whereas the kitchen at the first site could be used to prepare meals for groups of around 40 people, this kitchen is fairly basic. It has a small cooker, fridge, microwave oven and sink but is normally used to make tea and coffee. There are, however, shops and a selection of different types of take-away food outlets just across the road.

Although there is not as much room as at the campsite, there is a garden where tents can be put up and a car park and additional hard standing for camper vans and the like. A public car park is available a short distance away for any overspill from day visitors who may care to join us.

As before, there are no beds but indoor floor space is available. There are 3 rooms available separate from the main hall for those who like their privacy or who want to sleep while others sit up talking late into the night.

There are neighbouring residential properties so we would have to limit the noise late at night.

I will PM contact number to anyone who requires it.

DC

It's time for a hands-up as to who will be coming. The following people have expressed interest earlier in the thread:

skarpi
Jack Campin
Susanne (skw)
Gulliver
Tim Leaning
Bloke in the Corner
Dáithí
Wilfried Schaum
Mr Happy

Although he hasn't posted, I know that Skipjack wants to be there for at least part of the weekend.

Fidjit and MudGuard, although initially hoping to come, have had to pull out.

Could you please indicate whether you are: definitely comming; probably coming; possible coming; not coming.
Are there any others not on the above list who might be there?
What about local'Catters who could help make welcome those coming from afar. Could you be there for all or part of the weekend?

If we have a ceilidh, it would be on the Sunday evening. It was Fidjit who asked for it but, as he won't be with us, what do other people think? Do you want one?

I am coming and already making travel arrangements. With Andy (Mudguard) not coming I'll be perhaps the only one who has been to all Eurogatherings so far.

Though I personally would very much prefer seeing Andy coming to that empty title.

After having checked boat and flight timetables and prices I have decided to take the train. It's just a matter of between 11 and 18 hrs travel with up to twelve times changing the train, depending on what time of the day I'll travel.

Is the tunnel made of glass so we can see all the fishes?

I'll arrive Friday afternoon (if all goes well) and will have to leave Sunday morning (I can't get Monday off).

Doug, is there a friendly B&B somewhere near for the two nights from Friday to Sunday?

Wolfgang

Doesn't look feasible for me. To get me and Marion there and back (without spending two extra nights) would be either 190 quid by train or a 14-hour bus trip each way via Birmingham.

First the good tidings: My younger daughter will have her final exam in summer singing the part of Patience (by Gilbert and Sullivan) and be an approved soprano and teacher of music.
My elder daughter will be awarded the prize for young culture of Wuerzburg for her songs written, composed and sung by herself.

And now the bad, bad news: Since I have to visit my dear children on both events I have to cancel my participation of this year's Eurogathering. I regret it immensely, especially not seeing a lot of good friends again, especially my fellow scoutmaster Doug in a Scout Home. My means are very limited since I am a pensioner, and I should never forgive myself missing my daughters' performances this year.

So sing and enjoy (alas! without me)

P.S. Some days ago I zapped the telly and what did I see? Some punts on green, geen canals, and the guesthouse where deboarded and had some jolly good hours near Niort some years ago. What a wonderful time!

It's a pity that you can't be with us, Wilfried, but your family must come first.

Yes, the Niort gathering was a good one, as have been all the Eurogatherings that I have attended. This year's appears to be for the select few but I hope that we will still be to make some good music.

Anybody else out there fancy coming to Grimsby for the Mayday weekend?

I wish all those who do attend a good time and hope to see some of you later in the year - and if not, in Reykyavik next year at the latest!

Thanks, Doug. I'm really sorry, you've done a great job organizing. But it's not unlike Kiel last year where only a handfulö of Mudcatters were able to turn up in the end. Still, with the help of quite a few local musicians we had a good time, dind't we? I'm sure the locals won't let you down!

I've turned to my malt whisky collection for consolation - one of them a Macallan Cask Strength (56%) bought at Stansted airport in 2003 on the way back from the Hull Eurogathering in frustration over British Rail's failure to deliver Wolfgang and me in time for our flight home. Got me in no end of trouble with my boss! (The missed flight, not the whisky!)

Hi folks,

With just one week to go, our Eurogathering is looking decidedly wobbly.

When Wilfried and Suzanne said that they weren't coming, that just left Don (Gulliver) + friends and Wolfgang coming from overseas. I sent a P.M. to each of them to see if they thought it was worth continuing. Don talked the situation over with his friends and they decided, quite reasonably, they were not so keen on spending the money to travel if no-one else would be there, as there is a lot going on in Dublin. Wolfgang has already booked his travel and accommodation but is trying to balance the cancellation costs against losing a weekend with his family. He is still considering whether it is worth coming or not.

Having come to a decision in my own mind that the weekend was not viable, several local 'Catters then posted to say that they were looking forward to the weekend. I have advertised it around some of the local clubs and music venues so, while I cannot guarantee attendance, some of these may turn up.

My own thoughts are that, at this late stage, it would be difficult to get the message out to any locals who might just turn up on spec. It would be a shame if they did turn up only to find it cancelled. The worst that could happen is that I find myself sitting alone in an empty pub on Friday and waste some charcoal on Saturday. We might have to relinquish the name "Eurogathering" as you can hardly have a gathering if there is nobody there to gather but what do you think folks? Shall we go ahead and see what happens?

Hope you'll have an enjoyable gathering after all, like we had in Kiel in 2007 with only a handful of Mudcatters there.

I haven't been online in ages, but wanted to wish you all fun at the gathering (if it goes ahead). Last year, we had to cancel last-minute when my father suffered a heart attack. I'm pleased to say he has made a slow but full recovery. Still, I can't make it to the gathering this year, as I will have to work 1 and 4 May, and am running somewhat low on funds.
Hope you will have a good time! Keep playin'.
