Irish music genius Donal Lunny is bringing the reformed Moving Hearts to California for two shows: March 15 at Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, and March 17 at Royce Hall, UCLA.

The band includes the incomparable Davy Spillane on low whistle an uillean pipes, Keith Donald on saxes, Noel Eccles on percussion, et al.

I have an extra ticket for the LA show. PM me if interested, I'll sell it at face value ($56).

This is a fantastic band, and sure to be a great show. Check out the Youtube clips:

I suspect if they're back as a band they'll be available for bookings. Any festival organisers or artistic directors reading this?

They're doing some festivals in Belgium and France in August, according to this site.

They did a few dates about this time last year.

http://www.movinghearts.ie/ still shows those dates in fact... I only found out about the Liverpool date long after it had sold out, so I'd love to see them going round again too.

There's also a mailing list to sign up with on the website, but be warned that I did last year and I've not heard a squeak since ... why do bands do that, by the way? Set up a mailing list and then never actually send out any emails to it? You get the confirmation email (so you definately know that the address wassn't mistyped & reached them) and then ....

sfmans,

I don't know how reliable this is but there's a whisper of another gig in Liverpool later this year. I should keep an eye on the Philharmonic website just in case.

Having said that, I went to see them last year and they weren't great. Not only that, but me and my mate seemed to be the only ones who'd paid for our seats - they'd given out loads of complimentary tickets to fill seats and there were still empty seats, I'm told, in the circle.

The sound was pretty poor in the stalls although I'm told it was better upstairs. I guess the thing is that that sort of jazz/rock/afro/'celtic' fusion thing just isn't distinctive any more. To me, it sounds dated. Nothing goes out of date as quickly as a vision of the future (look at any sci-fi movie from the 70s) and the gig seemed to me like nothing so much of an evening of 80s folkie nostalgia (going back to the days when people tried to re-brand Folk as something called 'Roots Music').

Without a singer in front of them they just sounded dull. Really, they are just as much an 80s band as Duran Duran - only with worse haircuts.
