Los Angeles Times: Tom Brumley dies at 73

Gosh, I don't know how we missed this one. One of the greatest steel guitarists,Tom Brumley, who was born in Stella, Missouri on Dec. 11, 1935 died of a heart attack on February 4, 2009. His work with Buck Owens and the Buckaroos is a monument to his skill. He also worked with Rick Nelson and a host of other stars, among them Rose Maddox, Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Rod Stewart, Chris Isaak, Merle Haggard, Reba McEntire, Sara Evans, Janie Fricke, and Martina McBride.

His father was Albert E Brumley, the noted gospel publisher and composer.

That would make Tom Brumley the brother of Albert E. Brumley, Jr. who did a nice record with Merl Haggard in the last few years, after Haggard largely gave up being a mainstream Country singer.

Tom Brumley replaced J. D. Manness in the Desert Rose band when Jorgenson, Duncan and Manness all departed. He is on their last three records, but none of their big hits, which were on earlier recordings.

His father is famous for writing the songs Rank Strangers, I'd Rather Live by the Side of the Road and I'll Fly Away.

A talented family with many major contributions to American culture and American music and each in his own way. Tom was identified with "the west coast sound" in country music and was an influence on many other steel players. Seems like he even got co-star billing for some live concerts. Sad to see him go. Thanks for posting.

One of the greats - I know of him best for his work with Buck Owens, and Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band. A sad loss indeed.
