Subject: Folk Deserts? From: Mr Happy Date: 20 Feb 09 - 08:09 AM In the area I reside, there쳌fs a good amount of folking about both close to home & if one can travel, there쳌fs more to be found in outlying districts. I쳌fm in Chester & given a 50-mile radius around this centre, there쳌fs numerous villages, smaller towns & settlements within this area yet some seem total folk deserts. I쳌fm not sure of the reasons for this, as there쳌fs probably a number of variables. Anyone any thoughts? |
Subject: RE: Folk Deserts? From: Acorn4 Date: 20 Feb 09 - 08:37 AM We're in a similar situation where we live in Leicester -some nights there is a choice of six or seven clubs we could go to. I used to live in East Sussex, and that was one of the "deserts" you're describing, though admittedly that was a long time ago. |
Subject: RE: Folk Deserts? From: Mr Happy Date: 20 Feb 09 - 08:53 AM Ok, I can guess that in some places, there's not sufficient population of musos/singers to support a musical get together, yet some tiny places have burgeoning venues. |
Subject: RE: Folk Deserts? From: Nick Date: 20 Feb 09 - 09:57 AM I think in some areas there are known and publicised gatherings running in parallel with another bunch of non-publicised ones which suit the participants to maintain as they are rather than expand or throw open to the world. I went to a new place (for me) which has existed for some years within 15 miles of me and then discovered two other ones within a similar radius which I was completely unaware of. |
Subject: RE: Folk Deserts? From: Fidjit Date: 20 Feb 09 - 12:57 PM It's all secret society stuff. Keep your ear to the ground and you'll find the places that you want. Desert. Hmph ! You should come over here. Chas |
