I was whiling away a pleasant house last night, leafing through my scrapbook of papillae maximae with the TV burbling away in the background when, during the ad break, I heard the strains of that old English dance tune "The Winster Gallop". Couldn't remember what the ad was for, but it seems that the ad men have got round to using folk tunes in TV ads.

What folkie tunes/songs do you think might be suitable for TV ads? You know the sort of thing: "I drove an old Rover for many a year..", etc.

(Gets coat).

And, of course, "a pleasant house" should be "a pleasant hour"!

EGods no! Do not even say folk song and TV advert in the same sentence.

Except maybe the Gypsy Rover song... That will certainly get me to shut the idiot box off. It makes my ears bleed.

There is a black and white film of old man shearing sheep.   The background music (gaelic I think) is a female singing lovely lilting, makes me tingle. Then it devolves into a should have gone to SpecSavers ad. The old sheepshearer has blindly sheared his dog.

Pity! I thought it was a trailer for some film. I was bitterly disappointed.

"My spurs are rusted, my coat is rent,
My plume is damp with rain,
And the thistle down and the barley beards...."

Visit Jones' Cleaning and Tailoring! We'll have your clothes and even your plume right as rain in no time!

"...With his loaded blunderbuss the truth I will unfold:
He made the Mayor to tremble and he robbed him of his gold...."

To restore HONESTY in government, vote for Dan Jones! He'll make the politicos tremble!

My mind is boggling with the possibilities!

Err, Anything vaguely 'olde fashionyed', in the context of a 'nice clean shaven' young man (30ish blue collar - ie: 'every-middleEngland- man') sporting something - maybe a tie - in patriotic 'Red, White and Blue'.

And preferably hillarious 'anti-PC' Golliwog Cufflinks to go with it!! Chortle!

All round my flat, I will place Ikea pillows
All round my flat, for a twelvemont and a day
If anybody asks me the reason why I'm doing it,
Its all because my catalog came in the post today.

BARRING OF THE DOOR - for a home secruity company

Grey Flannel -men's cologne and deodorant line

Don't mind the sweat when it drips from me
The pongy smell never worried me
But it really sucks when my girl disses me
I'll smell no more with the Grey Flannel line

Last Monday, I think, in the gap between the first and second part of the first episode of Coronation Street ......... is that OK?

One advert filled the whole spot - unusual in in itself - for The Coop - The Shops, the Bank and all the other bits and pieces that remain of the British / English Cooperative Society.

The music? Bob Dylan's Blowing in the Wind. I understand that this is the first time Dylan has allowed his music to be used in this way.

Empty Handed by our own George Papavageris would be apt for an ad today for any bank

The men of your forest, they asked of me,
"How many strawberries grow in the salt sea?"
I answered them with a tear in my eye:
"Aldi has strawberries for only 1.99 Euros for 200 grams!
(Offer valid for a limited time only, while supplies last)"

They do say that fact is stranger than fiction. Did I imagine it or was Woody Guthrie's car song used recently in an Audi advert?

I also saw an advert (was it for a bank or insurance - I'm blowed if I noticed the product!) recently with cod-Dylan guitar strumming and harmonica.

The Wild Rover's also been used on something recently.

As mentioned above, The Galway Girl's been used to advertise a product that's passed off as cider.

I'm sorry to be so vague about which adverts they were: I always seem to switch off from the product that they're advertising!

Surely the line " One maiden form withstood the storm " from " The Rose Of Allendale "is a natural for a bra advert!
