Hi,

anyone got any chord suggestions for the Jim Moray version of this song ?

Do something for me, boys
If I should die at sea, boys
Write a little note, boys
Set it off afloat, saying

Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Village and city girls by the quayside
Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Watching and waiting by the sea

I don't think I've seen the lyrics posted. Who's the songwriter?

ALL YOU PRETTY GIRLS (XTC Version, 1984)
(Andy Partridge)

Do something for me, boys
If I should die at sea, boys
Write a little note, boys
And set it off afloat, saying
Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Village and city girls by the quayside
Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Watching and waiting by the sea

Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Quiet or witty girls by the quayside
Bless you, bless you, all of you pretty girls
Watching and waiting there for me

I think about your pale arms waving
When I see the caps upon the green
And the rocking roller-coaster ocean
Think about you every night when I'm fathoms asleep
And in my dreams
We are rocking in a similar motion

I think about the salt sea rolling
Down in pearly tears upon your cheeks
Just like the day the harbour pulled away
I think about your warm white sheets unfolding
The more I have to drink
The more that I can think to say

Do something for me, boys
If I should die at sea, boys
Write a little note, boys
And set it off afloat, saying...

There are a few well-known UK folk voices contributing to the chorus of that track, especially in the harmonies at the end........enjoy listening...

I don't know whether the "harbour pulled away" lyric is right, can't remember..

That's Bristol harbour, in the video, over new year 2008/9.

Well, it's in G major, although it starts in F and moves to G# for a section in the middle. The chorus chords are:-

G
Bless you bless you all of you pretty girls
C                  D             G         D
Village and city girls by the quayside
G
Bless you bless you all of you pretty girls
C                      D                        G                  ( F!!!!)
Watching and waiting by the sea

The verse chords area bit more tricky - that's a pedal note (a repeated note under every chord) of G while the fifth and seventh of the chord slide down a semi-tone at a time. That makes G7, Gdim, a chord that runs G,A,C,Eb (Cmin6/G?) then Em. It's easier to think of it as a notes sliding down a step at a time...

Theres an interview with Andy about the song here :- http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=34883466&blogID=237330908

Hi,

thanks for the link to the Jim Moray video - its quite amusingly cheesy in places and looks very 1980's. Thanks also for the XTC version. I was surprised how little it was changed. I always assumed that it had gone through a major overhaul.

I much prefer the Jim Moray treatment.

I'll have a go at the chords later.

Thanks,

Jiggers

Of course it's the harbour pulled away. It's poetry, okay? When you're on the boat, the boat's stays still (well bounces around a bit) and it's the harbour that pulls away. Relatively. Ask Einstein.

Eventually got around to learning this... I'm doing it a tone lower, on the uke, so Eb intro; F verse; in-betweentro in F# but otherwise chords pretty much as suggested by Guest JM (thank you!)

BUT!!!

The fourth line in the second verse has bugged me since... well, since Joe's 2009 post. It surely must be "I think about your warm white sheets enfolding"

So a belated thanks to all contributors above and I can't wait to thrust it on an unsuspecting public!!
