eanjay
thank you, you are such a wonderful person. I really enjoy talking with you. They are pretty rough, I have to rework some of them. I tend to just sit down hack out and post. Maybe someday I will figure out how to use the recording software correctly :-)

Purdy haunting song, o-dude...

Reminds me of another song I've heard over the years entitled "30 Inch Coal" where the opening in the mine is only 30 inches high and the miners have to lie flat in the work cars to go down into the mine...

Thanks fir sharing...

B~

Beautiful, Dan. Really moving....

"..Decades comes and decades go, and still our children die..."

I took JT's advice and googled...found this:

Part One of 'American Hollow' - A documentary in 10 parts.

Diane Sawyer talking about her documentary 'The Children of the Mountains'

You should put your song on Youtube, Dan, with some photos of what's going on..what's happening. Let as many hear it as possible.

What about Savage Squirrel? I had a folk/rockabilly/punk mixture thing for a while called the Bloody Holley's. I had a line in a song that said "the radio was blaring out Buddy Holley." One night when I was playing a writers night in Nashville I had to many beers and said Bloody Holley instead. One of the guys in the round with me asked who the Bloody Holley's were after. I laughed and thought it would be a cool name so later in Louisville Ky. I formed a little band that was pretty intense. Just an experimental thing and real aggressive. I named it after my slip up. We would pack the house every night and everyone always had something to say about the band name. SOme good some bad but it caught attention and stuck in people's heads.

You can count me in on anything that will help them. I would love that because they really have my heart. Send me an email on my personal account and we can talk about it. If you drive through the towns and cities you could easily fool yourself into thinking things are not that bad. When you travel out of the towns though it becomes evident that it is that bad and often worse than you imagined. These people have given so much to American culture. They have produced some of the best music and musicians America has produced. Like the poverty stricken Delta it is a breeding ground for artists that are great. Yet they are ridiculed in modern media with stereotypes that are degrading beyond belief. They are not lazy they are not stupid they simply need help. Go to youtube and type in Appalachian Poverty. The videos will make you sick or at least they should. I know that poverty is bad all around the world and it upsets me to see so many with so little. I am not rich hell I barely qualify as poor. I don't think I make enough right now to qualify for the poor status lol. There is a difference though between being in a rough time in your life and living a life of utter poverty. I can't afford to go to 3rd world countries and help right now. I care but I can't do it. I can help out in my backyard. I can help the people who's ancestors crossed the Cumberland Gap with my ancestors. If my whatever great grandfather had stayed instead of moving into the western part of the state those kids in the video may easily be mine. The men you see could have easily be me. The same applies for all of you regardless of where you are. If all I can do is help keep one kid warm on a cold night or offer a hot meal for a man that has toiled away a long hard day's work and ended it with no place to go what more can you ask?
Ok off my soap box. This is just a passionate issue for me.

I like it!

It's sweet of you to want people to give you real input, but (psssst...) how they'll REALLY give you input is by "stealing" it, reworking it in their own individual fashions, and crediting you with it. So it's time to set your policy on whether people need your permission to perform it.

Jerry you maybe "just and old fiddler" my gosh I love that song
so exited about your book ... but I am creating a ton of thread creep. The purpose of the song was to raise awareness and I am getting off track sorry Joe

Thank you she is Daddy's girl I have her spoiled already lol.

My Dad and Grandfather told me the same thing about rats. That is funny you mention that. I remember Dad telling me about a time they were mining under a lake. He said he was sitting down eating his lunch and hundreds if not thousands of rats came running by him from lower in the mine. It wasn't just a few seconds later water was up to his ankles and climbing. What had happened was the roof caved further down in the works in an area that hadn't been pinned yet. When it fell the lake above came pouring into the mine. The rats were getting out of Dodge lol. I know you probably know about the Canaries they would carry back in the old days to test for methane don't you?

I saw that show you are talking about. If you ever make it down this way I could show you way worse man. I have been active in the past with programs sending clothing and different type of aid to them. I live a couple of hours drive from those places. I think about 3hrs to Harlan county. It is a sad place but beautiful at the same time. It is not a hell of alot better here in the western part of the state you just don't hear as much about it. The main thing that saved us here is we have intersections of major highways and major railroads. That has helped this area alot. My family came through the eastern part of Ky to get here with the early settlers (well on my Moms side) so I still have family in that part of the state. That show was good and people around here have been talking alot about it. I am glad to see it to raise awareness. Things here in Western Kentucky are very tough right now but still many here have it way better than in the eastern part. IF we are hurting this bad they must be dying over there. I have helped alot in the past but wish I could do more. I guess there is still time. When I get back on my feet I want to head back over and do some more. The big difference is even though it is tough and hard here I know I can get back on my feet. Over there it is not a certainty that you will. No one deserves to live at that level of abysmal poverty in a country as filthy rich as America. Keep writing the songs man the more people hear about it maybe some change may come. If not believe it or not people take heart when they hear someone singing about what they are going through. It gives strength and hope because they know somewhere someone cares. It also instills pride and pride gives strength. Keep doing what your doing man it is great.

Bruce and Bankley. Isn't that a law firm?

you folks are way way too kind. Thanks Tom, I just play and write for fun. I thank you so much. My granddad worked in the mine in West Virginia in the early 1900. One time I saw this huge rat in our field and I was going to bop it one. He stopped me and told me when he was a miner he would feed them part of his lunch. He said you watched the rats, when they started running you threw your shovel and ran for they always knew if a gas pocket was going to be broken or if a collapse was going to happen.   Terrible job even today I think.

So sad the kids on that show, shook me pretty hard. I wasn't comparing my friends you folks are use to hearing great tunes from the masters on mudcat. I am just an amateur but I like to play. Thank you for your kindness. JT, the new baby is BEAUTIFUL. I know you are busy my friend no problem at all.

I think I wore out Jabaliya

I think I repeat the hook too much and need to rework it a bit. I never did write the lyrics down, did it on the fly last night with some handwritten notes. Gotta work on it a bit more me thinks

Hey olddude...... thanks for the song...sounds good, Dan.
I'm no murdoch or bankley either,,, well ,sometimes I am.... but mostly the strongest messages are the ones most simply put... which can be hard to do... see what I mean ?
so keep writing, singing and playing... it's the best medicine of all....   Ron.

I listened to all three, Dan. I like all of them, but especially the one you wrote for your daughter's wedding. Wonderful guitar playing.
