Subject: BS: Farewell to my Cape Breton fiddle
From: mg
Date: 22 Feb 09 - 06:51 PM

I am going to find a young student, about 12 to 15 perhaps, in Cape Breton, and give them my fiddle, which came from Cape Breton about 30 years ago. It was played by a Cape Breton fiddler for dances etc. and is supposedly a fairly good fiddle. Bow is no good.

Does anyone know a deserving, non-prosperous student who shows some talent for Cape Breton fiddling and would appreciate this? Let me know. I will not be giving it to anyone here, no offense..just a young person. mg

Good luck mg. Wonderful gesture.
I played guitar last night here in Quebec with a fiddler from P.E.I. who does just Cape Breton Style of fiddling.

I bought it in a pawn/porn shop in North Sidney, or maybe Sidney, Cape Breton. I think it was right after he had died. I believe he was from the Margaree Valley. mg

That is where my great grand father was from.
Small connection to the Cape. Actually the first Doucette's (Spelled Doucet back then.)came to the Margaree Valley.
I'm rambling sorry.

What a thoughtful thing to do, mg. I suspect it will find it's fiddler with you to give it a little guidance.

Janie

Thanks. Even if I was a good fiddler, which sad to say I am not..it belongs back there with someone who plays that style. mg

That is a very generous offer mg!
I will put a link to this thread on the Cape Breton music list. There is no doubt that it would help some youngster. I also know some people belonging to the Cape breton Fiddlers Association who may be of help in finding a deserving home for your gift.
          Best Regards,
                   Sandy

I'm sure if you send it to Sandy, the fiddle will find a good home.
He's in the know.

Jim, I passed the information on to the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association and I hope that they will find a suitable recipiant. I did offer to help interested persons contact mg but I am sure that it would be her wish to deal directly with, and choose between, anyone wanting to take up her offer.
            Slainte,
                Sandy
