TG4 is part of Irish public service TV, with particular responsibility for the Irish language. Its online archive section contains material which may be of interest to 'catters.
Click here to get the service.
Look out for the word "ceol" (music) and "cartlann" (archive) and click on the link. Some recent series worth checking out are:

Ceol ón gCroí
Siar an bóthar

While titles and much of the programmes themselves are in Irish, there are English subtitles - and some English speech and singing, in many of them.

The Ceol ón gCroí series has singers researching a theme with a view to composing their own song about it. Themes so far have included:

1798 Irish Rebellion (Áine uí Cheallaigh)
The Great Famine (Ciarán Ó Geallbháin)
The Dublin/Belfast strikes c. 1910. (Karan Casey) - not yet online.

Looks interesting - but I can't get any of the clips to come up when I press "play" - is it only available if you're in Ireland, or is there something I should be doing to bring it to life?

Just checked, and it appears that it's Firefox it doesn't like - works fine on Internet Explorer. If there's any way to sort that it' dbe helpful, since i generally use Firefox.

Yes, I get that problem sometimes too, suppose it's someting to do with browser settings but that's all beyond me I'm afraid!

I've sent a technical query to TG4 - their FAQ says it should work with Firefox. If I get a response that helps I'll post it here.

There's some Irish music worth listening to on this BBC site from up in the North - Blas - only audio, but it does work on Firefox.

No response from TG4 yet - but I've found that there's an Add On for Firefox called IE Tab which allows you to open up IE within Firefox for specified sites, so you can still use Firefox even for sites that insist on IE. TG4 clips work fine with it.

Tonight's (6/3/2009) programme in the Ceol ón gCroí series featured John Spillane on songs of emigration. It includes, among others, the inimitable Robbie McMahon of Spancelhill singing a few verses of Kilkelly, Ireland.
It should appear in the archive in a few days.

And it's great for the sport as well, and the language barrier doesn't matter too much there either.
