Thanks for all the helpful advice. Unfortunately I haven't got the time at present to set up my own archive site and that does seem to be the only way to ensure any degree of permanence. Having now searched for addresses for most of the songs in the songbook I think I shall put them on my disk and leave a more permanent solution until later.
Thank you all, now I have a better idea of what is likely and possible.
Regards, Geoff Lawes

It might be a better idea to contact each user about getting a copy of the video and explain what you want to do with it. The user could provide you with a file ie MP4, MP3, AVI, WMV etc via a download link on file share site.

Over the last year I have embedded about 600 YouTube videos in my archival site with the permission of their owners. Thus far, about 28 have become inactive, mostly because the owners closed their accounts, didn't like the results of their efforts, or were deleted because of copyright complaints. Since my site is on-line and not published in any form of hard copy, it is possible to remove embedded videos if the originals are removed so that visitors are not presented with dead videos which can be as frustrating as dead hyper-links, but it takes continuous attention and routine updating. For your purposes, I would suggest not publishing addresses to Internet sites or pages, but rather using the time to create your own account with your own videos so you are in control of their future. Relying on any Internet source for something intended to be as permanent as your archive sounds is risky at best.

The videos that I am talking about are not mine - they are ones put up by other people so I don't think there can be any question of their being preserved in situ by my opening an account. It's just that if these videos do have a reasonble chance of staying up for a few years then a list of addreses where people would be able to hear any of the 90+ songs at the click of the mouse would be a handy facility.

Best thing would be for you to setup an account, then it will stay as Bob said until you physically remove them

To the best of my knowledge, they stay there until the one who uploaded them takes them down. Or, in the case of Copyright infringement; YouTube will delete them. For that to happen, a claim to YouTube would have had to have been made. You pays yer money and takes yer chances, so to speak. BR

I am doing some research on a songbook of Spanish Civil War songs. There are a lot of recordings of these songs up on You Tube and I have begun collecting the web addresses with the idea of including them on a CD of my research, which will be lodged in the International Brigades archive along with the songbook. How long do the You Tube videos stay up ? Is it really worth my time collecting the addresses? What about My Space or any other hosts?
