On top of being a genius with his music. Jerry is one of the kindest people anyone could meet. When I wanted to do a CD for my kids. He listened to every iteration of every song over and over and always had some suggestion or advice. Sent me his music, talked about picking and styles of picking ... one of my hero's for sure and proud to say a treasured friend

Thank you, Art. A friend of mine has enjoyed the good music and companionship at that real life coffee table, too. How fortunate you are to have known Jerry for so many years!

How great to have a Handful of Friends, and all the memories that go with it. And yes, Art, those times are wonderful to remember. There was many a Catter who sat around that kitchen table in the 27 years I ran a concert series. None more special than Art.

And the Shellbacks... those were the days, my friend.

Jerry

Thanks for this thread - I've just spent a while this afternoon listening to Handful of Songs LP. It brought back wonderful memories of spending time with Jerry & Ruth & The Messengers. Jerry's song Handful of Songs is just the best! Cabbage Patch is my next favourite as well as.....(well all of them really)

Maeve,

There is a photo of Jerry with guitar stung and singing at that very same kitchen table of his. It is in my photo collection on line at Bruce Kallick's website. I took it when he ran the great museum in Stamford, Connecticut and was living in the gate house of that old mansion/museum. Jerry had brought me in to do a concert there at the museum.

Very fond memories!!!

Art

The pleasure of listening to Jerry's songs and reading his book awaits me in the future. In the meantime, I enjoy visiting his virtual kitchen table.

My 26 year old youngest daughter has a friend who sings and writes. Her friend won a singer/songwriter competition in Denver and was listed in the paper as Denver's best new songwriter. When she heard Jerry's "Handful of Songs" she said, that is the quality of songwriting i hope someday I can do. A great compliment from a great young writer I think. And pretty much says it all

Jerry's new Gospel CD blew me away. He is more than amazing for sure. I have that CD going pretty much everyday at work along with about every other one he did.

Every song of Jerry's on any CD is wonderful. A treasure for sure

I like "Old Blue Suit" a lot. It uses an old blue suit as a simple metaphor for a life of dignity and contentment - a simple, resonant idea, which speaks to people everywhere. It is also quite typical of Jerry Rasmussen's ability to take a throwaway line of everyday conversation and recreate the world around it. I like the way Jerry's music expresses strength and contentment all round. It is one of the best things I have found on Mudcat.
Mind you, it's just plain annoying the way he makes it all look so easy!

Just noticed the thread! If there is a * in back of the song title, it means it's not one of Jerry's own composed song---but I love the way he does it!!!!! Most likely it's a trad song.

There are so many of them.

Won't Go Home Until Morning
Handful Of Songs
Coal Man Blues*
Wild Colonial Boy*
Anchored By The Roadside*
Eighty Acres*
Old Uncle Jim He Said
Planters Bar
Old Blue Suit
A Dreadful Shame
Sun Comin' Up On Caroline
The Evergreen Bar-Rambler Boys
Last Mississippi Riverboat
Just An Old Fiddler
The Star Cafe Boys
Old Man's Drunk Again
Same Old Man Livin' At The Mill*
Tommy
Levi Kelly
Bring The Traitors In*

(Jerry Rasmussen with Luke Faust-unissued-1960s)
Johnny Played The Fiddle
Billy Broke Locks*
Young Man Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn*
Fair Ellender*
Whoa Back Buck*
Hopalong Peter*
Hello Stranger*
Lady Margaret*

Just for starters!

I think I'd pick Milwaukee/St. Paul. There was a magnificent Chicago Northwestern railroad station near the foot of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, a real classic of a building - torn down in the 1970's. Jerry's song makes me remember that magnificent building, and all the good times I had walking by the lakeshore on the east side of Milwaukee.
Jerry's song is about the Milwaukee Road station in Janesville, but it brings back memories of all sorts of wonderful train stations.

Hey, Burl: You know that I could never do Silver Queen as well as you did. Is that lp out on CD? If so, I want to buy it. My record skips ONE SILVER QUEEN. It sounds like Silver QueeQueeQueeQueeQueeQueeQuee until I jump up and lift the needle.

This thread ai a little awkward for me. There are so many great musicians and songwriters on here who have produced a larger body of fine work than I have. It's interesting though to see how people respond to different songs.

You know you have a newborn baby because you're up so much that you lose your peripheral vision.

Jerry

Thanks for the nice comments, all.

Jerry I am joining in on this buddy. I am having a hard time narrowing it down. I am blanking right now on the name of the one I wore out. You played it on a banjo on one of the first of yours I had. Biblical it's on the tip of my tongue. Get back to you on it. The baby had me up all night fussing and I haven't had my coffee. That is a sure fire recipe for brain dead in my book lol.

Field of Clover, because I am a songleader and when I lead that one, everyone jumps right on in. It's the perfect tune. Somewhere between gospel and a good beer hall song. No, not between-- both at once.

That man has too many to choose from. Heck, he's got more CDs than most folks have songs. I think you could take a dart, blindfold your eyes and throw. Whatever ya hit would be great--but not if ya hit him. That man is one powerful songwriter, imo.
