The concert took place last evening.   

Wow.   

I think everyone was blown away by the powerful performance that Nathan gave. One woman, a longtime regular at the Hurdy Gurdy, came up to me after the show and said this may have been the finest concert she has ever seen - anywhere! While I had watched Nathan before, this was the first full length concert that I had the opportunity to watch him. He owns the stage! I was chatting with another attendee after the show and she commented how diverse his peformance was yet it remainmed cohesive and flowed naturally.   Nathan shared some of his Tuvan throat singing through an original composition that was stunning - I never thought I would find myself tapping my toes and getting the urge to dance in the aisle to throat singing!   He ran the proverbial gamut of emotions through his songs. He sang "Northwest Passage" toward the end of the show - a real powerful and emotional moment. I found myself choking back tears and I saw few others wiping their eyes.   I know that many people, including myself, could not help but compare him to his father - but the reality that set in and moved us was that Nathan owns his own personna and it is a joy that he shares with - a truly unique performer that stands head and shoulders above most artists on the folk scene.

I only wish we had more people turnout. While it was a respectable showing, I wish more people could have filled our venue to witness this extraordinary performer.   It was Nathan's first time in our area, and I know that in these tough economic times people are hesitant about spending money on an unknown quantity. I'd just like to say that if ANYONE has an opportunity to see Nathan perform, do not hesitate - go see him!!   This music will only exist through support of live performances. With artists like Nathan on the scene, the future looks very bright. It is up to everyone of us to get out and support it!

I just hope Nathan doesnt damage his throat, the sound of it did nothing for me, perhaps it is a niche market, as for his 'stomp box' , I use my guitar case.

No need to apologize. I hope that people will turn out to see him wherever he appears. My purpose in working with the Hurdy Gurdy, as well as my radio show, is to help promote the music and the artists that make it.   Please feel free to announce any and all appearances that Nathan is making - he is an artist that should be heard!!

Nathan is unique - at times he's Young Stan, but at others he's someone else entirely. A great talent, I can't wait to see/hear him in the flesh.

Meself - you make a good point. If you've seen Nathan perform, you quickly realize that he is a unique and extremely talented artist. His songwriting is strong and shows great promise. His use of the stompbox and throat singing is amazing to experience. He has created his own body of work, and the last thing you need is for an audience to show up expecting an evening of Stan Rogers songs.   If anything, Nathan is carrying on the work his father started. When I spoke with him, Nathan said he realized that there was "unfinished business" with his father's untimely death. By not milking the parental spotlight, he is allowing himself to create his own art. Look at Arlo Guthrie - he certainly honors his father but he is unique.

I can think of a number of talented offspring who take a similar route. Jen Chapin, Bethany Yarrow and Sarah Lee Guthrie are three that immediately pop into my mind - each has a unique style that differes from their famous parents, but each carrys on a tradition.

Of course, the family name can be a double-edged sword. People expecting you to do nothing but the big hits of the famous parent ... heard about Aretha Franklin's son trying to make it as a singer, being expected to perform RESPECT constantly, having a bottle thrown at him because he was trying to play material other than his mother's hits ...

He really doesn't play it up, but he cannot ignore it. If you look at his official bio, you will notice that Stan is not mentioned for a couple of paragraphs - he discusses his family and his brother in sister in particular.

Speaking as a promoter, I realize that there has to be a curiosity factor.   Nathan does too. He also points out, righfully so, that the family tradition is to create music and everyone does it differently. Stan is different from Garnet, and Nathan is different from both. Yet all come from a similar tradition.

Friend of mine was involved in booking him somewhere a few years ago, I suppose when he was just getting started. At that time, he didn't want his family connection played up, but of course it was, as soon as promoters caught wind of it. Since it looks like it's part of the standard press release now, I wonder if he's changed his mind? No judgement implied; just idle curiosity.

I've lived in NJ all my life and have yet to hear a single native say "New Joysy".

On Saturday March 7th at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will present singer-songwriter Nathan Rogers and special guest, Jennifer Mylod and the Boys of County O'Cean.

Nathan Rogers (www.nathanrogers.ca) is the son of Canadian folk music icon Stan Rogers and the nephew of singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers. Nathan was four years old when his father died tragically in a plane fire in Cincinnati, but the music was passed onto him through his uncle as well as brothers and sisters. As a youth, Nathan traveled wi th and won solo vocal awards as part of Canada's Appleby Boys Choir.

While comparisons with his father are inevitable, Nathan has carved his own musical niche. In addition to writing and performing compelling songs, Nathan is an accomplished guitarist, percussionist and also is recognized for his Tuvan throat chanting. Nathan founded his own record label, Halfway Cove Music and in 2005 released his debut album, True Stories.   He has become a fixture on the Canadian folk music scene, and his appearance at the Hurdy Gurdy will be his first concert in New Jersey. Opening the evening will be New Jersey's own Jennifer Mylod and the Boys of County O'Cean (www.jennifermylod.com).
