Warren's workshop started 7pm Friday in Building E. It ended with a singaround of limericks which probably came to about 50 before we ran out.

Where and when was Warren's Bawdy Songs Workshop held ...I missed it

Incidentally, the Buddty Holly show was a delight despite the mates of Rob Willis attempting to turn it into a university tutorial

The ABC Concert was also excellent

Look at it this way Roger......big storm on Sunday evening, lots of heavy rain....another big rainstorm on Monday evening, even more heavy rain....25mls in one night. Soggy people, soggy venues, soggy tents.

See what you missed?

You're right Bruce, that workshop had fallen out of my brain space (it's getting a bit crowded in there) - it was amazing. Even though I had never tried shape note singing before, I found Duncan's workshop easier than I had thought it could be.

There's a lot to be said for trying a few experiments when you're at the National. With a zillion or so musical delights on offer from Thursday evening to Monday evening it's never going to be easy to catch everything. Besides, there were so many highlights that I knew in advance would be highlights - many of them have been mentioned in this thread - that the annual challenge of squeezing them all in failed as usual. Another excellent but frustrating National in that respect.

By Sunday, my brain (and the rest of my head) was hurting from having so much choice, so I handed over the decision making to a friend for a few hours. 'Our' surprise decision was to go to Duncan Smith's Shape Note Singing workshop on Sunday afternoon and I'd like to give it a really big thumbs-up. I'd met Duncan earlier in the week when he was giving one of the National Folk School classes (accompanying the fiddle on keyboards) and he seemed a perfectly normal sort of bloke! But he had the knack of making this Shape Note caper downright scary, with instant room-filling harmonies coming out of a bunch of people who didn't even know the songs five minutes earlier.

I recommend it thoroughly for clearing the sinuses and de-fogging the brain. And the Festival scheduled the workshop at a reasonable hour of the day.

You serious singers might know all about that Sacred Harp stuff but I spend most of my time trying to hide behind stringed instruments, so it was quite a "revelation" to me (sorry!)

Bruce

We (Himself and I) had a good festival, slightly low-key due to his recently diagnosed medical matter but good nevertheless. Highlights would have to be Warren's bawdy songs workshop - I haven't laughed so much for many years! - when I told friends about the fantastic time singing dirty songs they rolled their eyes and said "that'd be right, sounds like you!". Lyn and Evan Mathieson's CD launch of Harry Robertson material was terrific. We enjoyed The Hot Club of Cowtown, they were fun. This year we particularly sought out the Canadian performers as we have a family Canadian connection (our younger son is now more than four years into his 12-month trip to Canada and we have a lovely Canadian girl-in-law) - David Francey, Old Man Luedeke, April Verch - what a powerhouse that girl is.

And as Sandra has said, the Sunday morning hymn session was fantastic! I can see why Roger gets such a buzz doing it....standing in front of all those people with voices and harmonies in full flight gave me goose bumps. But we missed you, Roger! For the rest of the weekend total strangers came up to me and said what a good session it had been, which was unexpected but very nice.

And the best thing is the people; meeting up with folks that one only sees once a year, having dinner and chatting with Rowan in the volunteer's dining room, meeting Tangledwood on Tuesday morning, catching up with Bruce D again after several years, seeing Callie and her little bloke (what gorgeous curls that boy has! he'll be a heartbreaker when he's grown). Missing out on concerts because we run into someone we haven't seen for a year happens, and when it does we just go with the flow.

And it's only slightly less than a year until the next National......

Cheers

Sandra's National is a list of events I wish I had gone to but I couldn't because I was going to other events that I wanted to go to even more. I spent a lot of time enjoying the Central and Eastern European music of Vardos, Triplika, The Transylvaniacs, Xenos, and Mara. At Warren Fahey's bawdy songs workshop, I sang stuff I'd never sing at Sandra's folk club. Also enjoyed Colum Sands, Colcannon, The Fagans, Kate & Ruth, Bruce Watson, Eric Bogle & John Munro, April Verch, Martin Pearson, the PPM singalong, Andy Irvine and friends, the Spooky Men, Ami Williamson, and a couple of young'uns who were new to me, Ange Takats and CC.

We drove our daughter down on Friday and back on Monday and hardly saw her between. She camped out while we took the soft option of a local motel, and she was in the Sessions Bar until 7:30 each morning while we were generally in by 11pm. Oh, to be 21 again.

Ran into a couple whose daughter had been friends with ours when the girls were 11, a couple we hadn't seen since then. Also met a couple and found out the woman came from the same place as me (New York City), went to the same university as me, moved to Australia roughly the same year as me, and the man works at the same outfit as me in Sydney.

Sandra mentions Dya Singh in an earlier post. Did anybody else catch their morning concert in which Dya's grandchildren joined in? What an amazing performance by a six year old boy - perfectly in tune and obviously enjoying every minute.

Also, it would have to be the first concert I've been to where the audience sang to the performers before the performers even started. (OK, it was Happy Birthday)

Well, Made it home a few hours ago, a great drive over the mountains to the coast.

The Drambuie was in memory of old friend who always attended the Hymn session when he was alive, Dave Alexander who had one of the most powerful singing voices I've every heard.

What a festival! Can I book for next year yet? What I need is a reset button to go back to the end of last week and watch the acts and join sessions missed first time round. (and have another chance of winning the beautiful baritone guitar)

Unfortunately my laptop had power supply problems (and took out some fuses in the car) so I lost contact here and didn't meet any Ozcatters until just an hour before departing on Tuesday. Then it was a real pleasure to have a chat with JennieG and "Himself". Hopefully I'll catch up with the rest of you next time round - unless you come up to Brizzy before then.

From: Sandra in Sydney

eek, is that why we didn't meet, Andrez? Or maybe cos the phone box is no longer near the Restaurant?

my National -

Wed night, Martyn Wyndham-Read's Lawson concert @ The National Library after a quick visit to my colleagues in Head Office (well, ex-colleagues as I'm 2 years retired!) then dinner with one & her husband who accompanied me to the concert & loved it. Met an assortment of folkies & a few Mudcatters. Back to the the Festival & set up camp.

Thurs - Back to the National library for Folklore conference - Mudcatters Bodgie & Mark Gregory gave papers. A very interesting panel discussion by children's play researchers & the difficulties they have today in conducting that research. Then back to the Festival & into the festivities!

Concerts, sessions, workshops, conversations, meeting folks, rain, buying stuff, wandering round, taking pictures

highlights -

spending time at the Stockamn's Camp where I listened to a lot of good traditional music (including the duo MWR & Danny Spooner)
Martyn's concerts & conversations with him & Dan at various events
Danny's Seasongs workshop
Mark Gregory's AL Lloyd workshops which included several old film interviews from the 70s)
Dennis O'Keefe's lunchtime Australian song sessions each lunchtime in the Session bar
The Grand Parade at the Colonial Ball Sunday night (I took lotsa' pictures of the beautifully dressed dancers & had a great time talking to friends)
Jenny Fitzgibbon's ballad concerts
Keith McKenry's Lost Folksongs concert
Bodgie's Old Bush Songs & CD launch concerts

Grand highlight -
JennieG & I ran Hrothgar's Sunday morning Hymn session cos he couldn't make the Festival. JennieG, Rowan, Chris Maltby, Canberra Chris, & the others who led hymns might be used to singing in public but I'm not - I've never done it before, but there I was with Jennie in front of a room full of enthusiastic singers (those harmonies!!!) singing along with Jennie when she started the proceedings.
It was my voice that did most of the announcing & housekeeping & will be heard on the official archival recording of the session reminding folks we only have an hour instead of the usual 90 mins & that another session will be held as soon as we leave, & constantly reminding them to avail themselves of the excellent medicine provided by Dr Jamieson (thanks to Canberra Chris) & Dr Drambuie (thanks to another Mucatter, BruceD??)
We had enough medicine left to offer to the 3 coordinators of the next session who appreciated it.

The obligatory Ozcatter pic ((Bob Bolton, JennieG, Sandra in Sydney, Rowan, BruceD, Canberra Chris & Chris Maltby) was taken at the end of the session in the foyer - unfortunately a few Ozcatters escaped (freda & Callie with her 10 month old son who I still haven't met) & other Catters were photographed at various times in the festival & pics will be posted in due course.

My, how quickly they forget! Fancy leaving me off the list! Have I missed a single National any time in living memory? No! And of course I won't be missing this one. I may not have been around much on Mudcat lately, but I'm still around, and I'll be going down to Canberra on Thursday, and as usual, I'll be camping with Black Joak Morris in their usual spot past the Mallee and near the big portable shower truck.

Sandra mentioned the belly-off further back. I believe though it hasn't been programmed this time, it will be happening, some time, and possibly on the street. So watch out for it! A great photo opportunity as Sandra said.

I find a good place to bump into people on the Thursday night, is the session bar. That's where I usually gravitate to, and I'll try to remember to wear my badge. Other than that, there is a sort of loose arrangement that anyone who isn't doing anything else around lunchtime (say 1pm or so) could grab some lunch and wander into the session bar and bump into a few other Mudcatters. It's a very loose arrangement, because there's so much to do, it's easy to get sidetracked, but I try to make it in there on some days.

As some of you may know, I have plans to flee the country in a few months, so that I can start a new life in the UK with Rob, a Mudcatter who I met on Facebook (as a friend put it the other day - I downloaded someone from the internet :)) We are really hoping to make it back for a visit and time it so we can be at the National one year, but this year looks like being my last as an Australian resident, so I will be making the most of it!

See yez all there. Only 2 more sleeps for me!

Those are higher daytime temperatures than predicted for Sydney (but also lower nighttime lows). I won't get there until late afternoon Friday. I love to go to the singing sessions but I can't tear myself away from the concerts, e.g., Friday Colcannon are on from 10 to 11pm, and later there are a couple of bands I know nothing about, The Secret Lunch and The Wedded Bliss. I'm not complaining - it's good to know that no matter what you do you're almost certain to have a good time!

Thursday some of us (me, Bob, Bruce, Bodgie & Mark) will be at the National Library Folklore conference (9-5), but there is a free concert in the foyer at lunchtime (12.30 - 1.30) if you want to pop over there & say hello.

JennieG will be working in the Information/Office area (in front of the Coorong)

When I get back from the NLA I'll have to set up camp (simple really, I'll just be moving bedding & other stuff into my tent in Tent City) so I could meet you somewhere after that. How about 8pm at the phone box near the session bar?

I don't usually attend the Opening concert, I normally wander round & spend time at Troubadour - but I'll be at the Singing Session from 10.30. Other Ozcatters likely to be there are Chris Maltby, freda, Canberra Chris, Gerry.

Chris Maltby sings with Ecopella, Cloudstreet is singing around the place, Canberra Chris is a member of the Shiny Bums (book launch Sat 5pm Merry Muse), Mark Gregory is also performing.

Just a thought is there any chance of an early "meeting" get together or similar say on the Thursday? That way faces and names can be matched up and you can say hi etc to each other as you move around the festival to gigs, shows and events of interest and not have to wait until sunday? I know some know each other by sight but then thats not true for all. Just a thought anyway. No dramas if it cant happen but it kinda makes sense to me at least.

Cheers,

just found this - gotta get there with my camera! It looks like it might visually challenge the Morris/Belly dancing event which has given me zillions of pics.

Bollywood Bush Band Dance - National Folk Festival
Sunday April 12, 2pm - 3.30pm at The Mallee

Dya Singh's daughters Jamel, Parvyn & Harsel (The Singh Sisters) join fiddler Ernie Gruner, percussionist Peter Vadiveloo (Jugularity) & his daughters Ruby and Bella, eclectic guitarist Harry Williamson, & Indian strings player Josh Bennett (of Dya's group)

to play and teach Bush dances, Bollywood dances and fun fusions thereof.

The Bollywood version of a Heel and Toe polka looks great, and makes me wonder if it is the original version !

see ya, Malcolm!

Andrez, another good singing session is run by Dennis O'Keefe in the Session bar from 1-3 every day - theme - Australian songs (well, Dennis is the expert on Waltzing Matilda!) I usually get there most days.

The Traditional Australian tunes sessions is held in the same place from 11-1 each day.

I'll also be getting to Keith McKenry's workshop on Australia's Lost Folksongs (Fri 5.30, Trocadero)

The Stockcamp is another good place for traditional stuff.

Unprogrammed stuff from John Warner & Margaret Walters -

Friday 3-4.30pm   Stockcamp -- WALTERS & WARNER singing bush songs and John Warner's songs

Friday 7pm    Singing Room -- contributing a ballad or two in Jenny Fitzgibbon's BIG BALLAD BLAST

Saturday 12pm   Trocadero -- Marg doing a song in the Fagan's workshop, SINGING THE WEAVING

Saturday 4pm    Budawang -- joining Danny Spooner for 3 songs in the UNION CONCERT

Saturday 6.30pm Singing Room -- contributing to the PETER PAUL & MARY singalong

Sunday 8.30pm   Flute & Fiddle -- contributing to the PETER PAUL & MARY singalong

Monday 1.30pm   Singing Room -- Marg doing a song in Danny Spooner's event: INTERPRETING TRADITIONAL SONG

I hadn't put PPM on the Must Attend list, but the others were on my list

sandra (traditional stuff, who me?)

the hymn singing session is in the Restaurant (the Singing Room), Sunday 10-11. Usually we have an extra 30 mins & space between our session & the following, but THEY have programmed another lot to follow at 11, so we will have to stop before 11 - which means the Mudcat pic can't be the usual leisurely photo at the conclusion of teh singing.

The late night singing sessions are programmed in the Restaurant after 10 till about 2, then we just walk out the back door & join those who are already in the stairwell between the singing room & the session bar. The stairwell is a normal concrete fire escape type & is always packed with singers. An advance party of singers take over the stairwell during the earlier part of the Late night singing session so musos can't take it - they have the entire session bar! Stairwell sessions have been known to go till 6.30 - tho the latest I've stayed is 4.30.

Even if you can only stay fro a song or 2 or 3 it's worth it - the stairwell has the best acoustics & when packed solidly with singing bodies is a magic.

See the program on the National website & start marking Must Attend stuff!

oops, gotta chatch a bus, my physio is waiting!

Have fun, gang!

And don't stay up too late or you may get slogged in the foggy foggy dew.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, 10,000 miles away!

Jennie, I also have a (new) Akubra - I bought mine in Bendigo when Dot & I visited the famous Bendigo Hat Shop. Bob waited over 4 months to get his as a special order from the Hat Shop in the Strand arcade (who specialise in Akubras!)

Tangeledwood - I believe there are a contingent of Qlders on the other side of the arena from the session bar. My Vic friends will also be there near them.

If you print a copy of the previous Ozcatters pic you can use it to locate many of us! We tend to congregate in the Singing Sessions at night & afterwards in the stairwell (between the singing session room & the session bar!)

Tangledwood - do you know Bob? If not keep an eye out for an official photographer wearing a new Akubra & a Mudcat fish & banjo label! Check out the Ozcatters pics I linked to in an earlier post. Will you be camping anywhere near the Mathiesons?

Thanks Sandra, I don't think that I know Bob but I'll certainly be keeping my eyes open. It's my first time at the Nationals so I don't know the camping layout. I'm hoping to catch up with I friend that I haven't seen for a year or so who says he'll be "near the trotting track opposite the session bar". The laptop will be coming along so we can update via here.

Bob has a new Akubra??!!! well well......he will look very spiffy.

Only one more sleep for us Sandra! We were originally going today, but Kevin has spent much of this week at doctors having various tests and procedures (he's fine now) so we delayed it by a day. I will be starting work in the office on Monday.

Cheers
JennieG

If you get to the concert, you can meet my colleague & her husband who will also be there. They are owned by 4 cats & I'm sure you'll have a great time comparing cat stories!

Bob is arranging for the new Ozcatter labels to be printed (his preferred printer is not working) & he'll be able to hand them out.

The NLA concert sounds good Sandra - we might give it some thought. We have friends in Canberra and usually meet up with them at least one night before the festival starts.

I've offered to sing at Bodgie's Friday night session, but as he's looking for good Australian specimens of the genre and I've confessed to knowing only bad American ones I'm not sure he'll take me up on my offer. So mark me down as a guest Ozcatter who may or may not be performing.

I hope to get a 3am start for the drive to Canberra with daughter #2 and her mate (the latter is a folk newbie); daughter #1 and her mate (the latter also a newbie) are having HSC exams on the Thursday and are arriving by plane but will start their mug juggling the next day.

We have a new Ozcatter (Bodgie; I'll not blow his cover immediately) who will certainly be there and performing; his collection of songs and singers on Friday night may well rival Hrothgar's on Sunday morning.

Cheers, Rowan
