Subject: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: Tony Burns Date: 29 Jun 99 - 08:56 AM If someone has the lyrics to this song as heard on the Nenagh Singers Circle CD I'd like to get them. If no one has them I'll try to transcribe them myself in a few days. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jun 99 - 03:47 PM Hi, Tony - don't know that song, but a Forum Search comes up with The While, Drover, which I ain't gonna touch with a ten-foot pole -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: Tony Burns Date: 29 Jun 99 - 04:31 PM Thanks Joe. That's not the one I had in mind. :-) I took some time today and transcribed from the CD. I've sent the words to George Henderson for clarification and corrections. I'll post them here when I hear back from him. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: NSC Date: 30 Jun 99 - 05:06 AM Ballyporeen, as mentioned in this song, is a small village, Ithink its in Kerry, from whence came the ancestors of one Ronald Reagan. In the last verse there are two |rish words the spelling of which I am unsure. When Tony posts his words you will see them. I am sure Martin Ryan or Alison will be able to assist in correcting these spellings. George |
Subject: Lyr Add: DAVY THE DROVER From: Date: 30 Jun 99 - 07:03 AM Thanks to George for the help with the place name. Here's the words as I now understand them. I hope someone can clarify the last verse. (What I've transcribed as Alana and Astor I think are actually some other words, likely Gaelic.) Other areas in question are the line "You idle old gossip you have me disgraced", I think the last word should rhyme with paint. Also the line "Not a bob do we earn when nip on the dole" may need some correction or clarification.
DAVY THE DROVER
I'm Davy the Drover from Ballyporeen
Sweet Davy the Drover from Ballyporeen
Oh your tongue is like lightning you ugly old sack
You drunken old boozer no more of your chat
Oh, the children are critters you care not a jig
See here me bald hero this stick I have got
Ah Nellie Alana, Ah Davy Astor |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: Tony Burns Date: 30 Jun 99 - 09:03 AM There is a tune Alison but I have no way of getting it online. This is just one of the songs on the CD put out by the Nenagh Singers Circle. It is worth getting a copy. You can find out how to get your own copy at their web site http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Alley/4749/ Mudder George Henderson is part of this group and is the singer on track 5 of the CD. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Davy The Drover From: NSC Date: 30 Jun 99 - 10:15 AM Thanks Tony, Nice to be called a singer ! Many in Nenagh would not agree. Live on the dole I think are the words but I'm not sure. I will have to listen to it again. George |
