Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Tune From: curmudgeon Date: 27 Feb 09 - 10:37 PM Personal Pet Peeve/Thread Drift. No offense intended, but when people, most of whom know better, confuse "tune" and "song," it near creates rage in me. A song has words and music, a tune is just the music. Kendall's a fine guitarist, but I can't recall him perfprming any instrumentals. Please try to preserve our language, especially after eight years of wanton assault. And now, back to your favorite Kendall song - Tom |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Tune From: katlaughing Date: 27 Feb 09 - 11:20 PM I cannot pick just one! The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and a close second tied by I Remember Loving You & Rolling Home! |

Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Midchuck Date: 28 Feb 09 - 08:58 AM Another vote for AOTS. Kendall once told me that Utah wouldn't sing that after he heard Kendall do it; he said it belonged to Kendall now. And Kendall has never told a lie.... Peter |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: jacqui.c Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:04 AM The Lock Keeper and Song For The Animals come to mind for me. Then I start thinking of all the other songs............... |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: kendall Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:12 AM Peter, it was Phoebe Snow that Utah said that about. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Midchuck Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:15 AM Woops! P. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Micca Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:54 AM I also vote for "Ashes on the Sea"!! and now I guess I'll have the chorus as an Earworm again!!! for the next week or so! |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Midchuck Date: 28 Feb 09 - 10:08 AM You can always sing: "...and I am told that one who loved you has thrown your ass into the sea." That may cure it. P. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 28 Feb 09 - 11:02 AM I love all the songs I have heard Kendall do. Never heard a clinker come from him. The one that stands out for me is Gently Down The Stream of Time. But no doubt my favorite will be the next one I hear from him, hopefully at Old Songs this year. Don |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Micca Date: 28 Feb 09 - 12:30 PM Oh I almost forgot, the first song I ever heard Kendall sing, which I will always associate with him, as it seems to encapsulate some of his philosophy of life.... " Theres a $5 fine for whining" |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: kendall Date: 28 Feb 09 - 01:38 PM Peter, you just ruined one of my favorite songs!LOL You folks are so great, I don't know what to say. |

Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: KT Date: 28 Feb 09 - 02:48 PM Here's my experience....I can be driving along in my car, or working out, or just puttering around the house, while listening to music, and when a Kendall song comes on, any Kendall song, it makes me smile. Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: jacqui.c Date: 28 Feb 09 - 03:16 PM Jayto Folk Legacy has CDs for sale, as do we. You can also hear Kendall singing Phoebe Snow on the Utah Phillips tribute album, available from Righteous Babe. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Midchuck Date: 28 Feb 09 - 03:58 PM You can also get the 4-CD collection of Utah's stuff, "Starlight on the Rails." Kendall sings "Ashes on the Sea" on Disk 3, track 25. Track 24, Utah's introduction to the son, is where Utah makes the statement that proves he was a serious user of hallucinogens. (Nyuck, Nyuck) Peter. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Nancy King Date: 28 Feb 09 - 05:23 PM AND there are several pieces by Kendall on the wonderful Mudcat CDs! You can't escape! Not that you'd want to. Not sure I can pick a favorite -- great stuff! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Big Mick Date: 28 Feb 09 - 05:29 PM Asking such a question is like asking, "which glass of water did you like best?". Order the Captain's CD from Folk Legacy, and you will understand, my Padawan Learner. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: gnu Date: 28 Feb 09 - 08:56 PM I first met Mr. Morse on The Maine Public Broadcasting System. He didn't meet me until years later. And he still hasn't, in the flesh, which is his good luck. Now, I never knew this fellah was an author, a guitar player and a singer of note until a while after I saw him on the TV. Up here in the frozen white north of The Canuck Maritimes, we used to get news of any type well after the fact. I just knew him from the TV, in the kitchen, tellin stories. I was enamoured... enrapt... by the eloquence and the charm. Then, I found himself, by chance when I was researching song lyrics and recordings at this here Mudcat Café, and I was again taken by his posts. In the past years, I have not only discovered his songs and stories, both recorded and written, but I have come to discover more of this man, albeit from a distance and not truly in depth as we only communicate, off and on, through Max's medium. If you think that this man's recordings, writings and posts are treasures, I can tell you, even with my very limited friendship with him, indeed from afar, they are tenfold and more. My favourite? Every single one of them. Treasures all. And I have heard a lot more of them than most, and fewer than many. I therefore count myself lucky and unfortunate both. Certainly blessed. If heaven is a rock pile, I want to be on Kendall's chain gang. Don't ask. He won't tell you either. g |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Bobert Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:11 PM Heck with the songs... Yeah, sure, he's a fine folk singer but... ...his real strength is in telling stories... If you ain't heard his hunting story that you ain't heard a story... B~ |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Jayto Date: 01 Mar 09 - 12:28 AM Is there anything on youtube or anywhere that I can watch and hear? |

Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Amos Date: 02 Mar 09 - 12:00 PM Well, sometimes I think I will never forget the sound of Kendall singing "Call all hands to man the capstan...." but then I think of him singing "He came from his palace so grand..." and that gets supplanted by the sound of Kendall telling the story about the aged streaker at the garden show, and then I can hear him sining "I remember loving you...." and suddenly that gets pushed aside by the story about the talking dog, which gives way to "By the time you get back here with toilet paper that bird will be a mile away..." and then I hear him singing "Gently Down the Stream of Time" and "Ashes on the Sea" and I get ALL confuzzled. A |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: SINSULL Date: 02 Mar 09 - 12:29 PM The somewhat inebriated display Kendall and max put on at the Getaway a few years back has completely destroyed Palace Grand for me. A classic Mudcat moment. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Art Thieme Date: 02 Mar 09 - 07:21 PM There are aton of ones I enjoy, but I think it has to be 'You've Got To Make Hay While The Sun Shines' --- or whatever it's called. It has several levels on which to appreciate it. Art |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: kendall Date: 02 Mar 09 - 07:29 PM That must be Dave Mallett's Haying Song. Ok, Art, that song was ruined for me years ago, so now I'll ruin it for you. I was singing it for some folks out behind a cattle shed at a Bluegrass festival, and suddenly I noticed a young couple down over the bank rolling around in the grass. I could tell by the way they were acting that they were quite fond of each other, and suddenly, that song took on a whole new meaning. ...you drink from the spring get mud on your knees... six loads in and 8 more to go...you know when to rise and you know when to rest...and make sure it's dry when you put it away. |

Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Allan C. Date: 13 Jun 13 - 05:43 PM I've done enough haying to have a deep appreciation for Kendall's delivery of the song. I think it is a fine song to begin with, but I especially like how the captain sang it. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Jun 13 - 06:15 PM I like his latest, "I Was Hoping To Screw But Got a Header Instead." Spaw |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: Midchuck Date: 13 Jun 13 - 06:18 PM I'm so honored to see this, but it is also so hard to know I'll never sing again. It would be hard for anyone to whom singing was a big part of their life. No argument. But at least there's a lot of your stuff on records. So, in a sense, you can go on singing even when you're plowed under. In the meantime, you can tell lies. You do that SO well... P. |
Subject: RE: Your favorite Kendall Song/Tune From: gnu Date: 13 Jun 13 - 06:40 PM Thank ye, Cap'n. Ye knows what I mean. I'll bet just about everyone else does too. |
