Does this have anything to do with Ashley Hutchings' album "By Gloucester Docks I Sat Down and Wept"`?

I have no idea.. It was brought up at a concert featuring the "Chanteens" a singing group from the Sound school A high school here in Connecticut. it is a school that is centered around Marine
life, Aquculture etc. etc. the group specialises in Sea Chantees and songs of the sea.
also searching the song "You can't eat the muscles from New Haven Harbor   WHO WROTE it????   This refers to New Haven Connecticut where the muscle beds were near the sewage outlets

If it's Gloucester by the Sea the chances are it's an American songwriter, as our Gloucester here in the UK isn't by the sea. There is, however, one in MA that is. So I think we can rule Ashley Hutchings out of it!
Quite like the concept of muscle beds ... has much more of a manly ring than mussels!

I loster her in Gloucester but I flounder by the sea.
I hear this saying a lot but never as a song.
There is a Gloucester here & it's by the sea & there's a Manchester-By-The-Sea, the next town over.

Barry

Sorry to BORE you all but ----- the Severn, past the city of Gloucester, is tidal.

How close to the sea do you want it? How saline does it have to be? How many tall ships do you want in the docks?

Subject: Lyr Add: LOST HER IN GLOUCESTER (from Jones/Goslin
From: cetmst
Date: 02 Mar 09 - 06:35 AM

Transcribed from a tape by David Jones and Tom Goslin. Sorry, a couple of the fish got away.

I LOST HER IN GLOUCESTER

I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea.
I told her that I loved her and she said that she loved me.
The shad (?) was loaded and so was she.
Well I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea.

Down by the ocean was where I flounder.
Just for the halibut I threw my arms around her
But I could not get to first bass with her
(She was a mussel) and she had a lovely kisser.
She was hard of herring and she smelt like turpentine.
I fell for her with a hook, line and sinker,
But how was I to know she was a whale of a drinker.

I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea
She never said goodbye or I'll see you .....
Sh here I'll perch on this rock by the sea,
And sing you this tuna of the girl that once loved me.

Hope salmon can add the missing words.

Shad is a kind of fish. (Actually, there are at least 2 kinds)
All the fish mentioned are UK fish, but may be USA too, I am not sure

Flounder, Shad, Bass, Halibut, Herring, (whale), Perch, Tuna

Additions/corrections:

I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea.
I told her that I loved her and she said that she loved me.
The ship was loaded and so was she.
Well, I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea.

It was down by the ocean that I first flouder.
Just for the halibut I threw my arms around her.
But I could not get to first bass with her;
She was all mussel and she had an ugly kisser.

She was pickerel most of the time.
She was hard of herring and she smelt like turpentine.
But I fell for her her with a hook, line and sinker.
How was I to know she was a whale of a drinker?

Well, I lost her in Gloucester, in Gloucester by the sea;
She never said good-bye or auf weidersehn to me.
So here I'll perch on this rock by the sea
And sing you this tuna of the girl who once loved me.

David's album notes say, "Collected by J. Barre Toelkin and learnt from Joe Hickerson."

There is a grouper-like fish with a big mouth also known as a 'kisser' which seems more likely the one meant here, as the others are ones known to fishermen (or whalers).

The US Copyright Office catalog says copyright to I LOST HER IN GLOUCESTER is claimed by Ronald Eugene Dameron, 1982. (Hey, I ought to use that database more often!)

There is a video of I LOST HER IN GLOUCESTER at YouTube. The sound quality is rather poor, but I was able to confirm that the lyrics correspond to what Celtaddict posted.

[By the way, the kid singing that song in the video is a member of the S. S. Chanteens?a group of teenagers who sing sea songs! I am very encouraged to know that there are some young people who appreciate this type of music. You can follow links from the YouTube video or see the MySpace page to hear more of their singing.]

Jim, the SS Chanteens in the past few years have been part of the scheduled performances at the Mystc Seaport Maritime Music festival. It doesn't really mention the fact, on their facebook page, that shanty singer extraordinariore Paula Daddio (formerly of "Shipping News") is/was their teacher, mentor & guiding force behind the group. They're are also schooled in the art or sailing & seamanship by Paula. Hopefully they will be on the Mystic schedule again this yr.

Barry
