Subject: Can White Guys Be Hip - TBOOK NPR From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Mar 09 - 02:52 PM To the Best of Our Knowledge on National Public Radio is playing this program today, March 1, 2009. Very interesting. I knew some of this stuff already, about how "hip" Bing Crosby was back in the 1930s and before WWII, etc. I didn't realize his ties with Louis Armstrong went so far back or were so strong, though I should have realized it. I knew they worked together many times. There is a lot more to the program than the Crosby/Armstrong connection. It's all very interesting. This is a direct link to the program (it plays through RealPlayer). SRS |

Subject: RE: Can White Guys Be Hip - TBOOK NPR From: Acorn4 Date: 02 Mar 09 - 11:22 AM It's very "unhip" to say "hip" though, isn't it? |
Subject: RE: Can White Guys Be Hip - TBOOK NPR From: Amos Date: 02 Mar 09 - 11:49 AM No, it isn't unhip to say hip--the truly hip are never swayed by mere semantic faddery; and, ya know, when you're hip, you're hip. A |

Subject: RE: Can White Guys Be Hip - TBOOK NPR From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Mar 09 - 09:51 AM There was also an NPR program, to do with 50th anniversary of "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis, that played the night before. I can't find a link to it, but there is a package of stuff at Amazon under that title. These amounted to a couple of evenings of good listening. SRS |
Subject: RE: Can White Guys Be Hip - TBOOK NPR From: Azizi Date: 03 Mar 09 - 01:59 PM Just in case anyone's wondering, here-straight from the 'hood- are some contemporary ways of saying someone (or something) is "hip": "the bomb" That jam is the bomb. "off the hook" ; also "off the chain". Man, you got that right. That beat is off the hook. "down". I'm down with that. "mad cool" Yeah, and by the way, our Pres. is mad cool.. :o) |
