Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker 3-2-09 From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Mar 09 - 09:14 PM I'm pleased that Richard had another 15 years to do what he really wanted to do. I am very pleased with the two concertinas he created for me, one a F/C which he had never tried to produce before. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker 3-2-09 From: GUEST,Stewart Dean Date: 06 Mar 09 - 02:09 PM I am stunned: Rich was so vibrant, so alive, so very much engaged in so much, like some Shiva Nataraja. It seems incomprehensible, inconceivable that he could be gone. As one gets older, life increasingly becomes a sort of shooting gallery, and there are fewer and fewer targets in one's cohort. Damn. He was a man of talents, of sparkling engagement, of broad, lively experience. He not only broadened the lives of those he touched, he gave them much that enabled them to broaden their lives themselves: he enabled, he potentiated. A full life: Ave atque Vale. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker 3-2-09 From: GUEST,Woody Date: 06 Mar 09 - 02:55 AM Lots of us only knew him through online communications yet his passing still seems the loss of a friend. A testament to how highly he was regarded and what a nice bloke he was. With the Morse range of Concertinas he was also very important to the Concertina world - making quality instruments more available and affordable. His knowledge and enthusiasm will be greatly missed. Really sad news. My sympathies to his family & friends. W |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker 3-2-09 From: ConcertinaChap Date: 04 Mar 09 - 04:26 PM Coming so soon after Rosie this is very upsetting. There is a long thread on the forums at concertina.net of people offering their reactions. Simply, Rich was a really nice bloke, both in person and by email, and his legacy to the concertina community is huge. I'm going off now to play my Morse anglo and think of him. Chris |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker 3-2-09 From: MikeofNorthumbria Date: 03 Mar 09 - 06:42 PM 'Our last printed catalogue gave Rich's job description as "Guiding Light," and so he was. We will carry on, but we will miss him very much' And so say all of us. Mr Morse designed and built superb concertinas - mine has given me many hours of pleasure. His postings on concertina.net were full of technical information, yet clear enough for novices to get the point - they taught me a lot. And so, though we never met, his passing feels like a personal loss - my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Wassail! |

Subject: Obit: Richard Morse, concertina maker From: JWB Date: 03 Mar 09 - 02:32 PM I just received this email from the folks at The Button Box, the company Rich started in Amherst, Massachusetts, over 20 years ago that makes and sells the Morse Concertinas he designed. "As many of you know, 14 years ago Rich Morse was diagnosed with melanoma. In the years that he successfully avoided the progression of the disease, he accomplished many of the things he wanted. Sadly, the melanoma recently returned and spread rapidly; treatments couldn't keep up, and last night, Rich passed away. The end was quiet and peaceful, for which we are all grateful. Our last printed catalogue gave Rich's job description as "Guiding Light," and so he was. We will carry on, but we will miss him very much." It took passion, vision and stick-to-itivness for Rich to succeed with a business that is so far removed from the mainstream. I've yet to meet a squeezebox player in the US who hasn't heard of The Button Box, thanks to the tireless efforts of Rich and his dedicated crew. Comprimere in aeternum, Rich. Jerry |
