It struck me when seeing Richard Morse's Obit that although I never met him I knew instantly who it was.
On the other hand there have been several obituaries here that were for people that I have met but did not know their names, so did not realise who they were.
In the folk world we rely on being on first name or even no name terms to a great degree so this could be a common ocurrence.

If at all possible could posters of a new Obit or early posters to it try to include a link to a photo of the deceased. It would help to prevent that "I wish I'd realised earlier" feeling.

Is it possible to think of a way to create a gallery of late Mudcatters?

Perhaps everyone who is planning to die soon could be encouraged to send in a picture?

Actually, it is a good idea. Since most of us has shown up at a festival or two, maybe a link to a festival picture if not a formal studio shot.

Back in the Good Old Days , we had regular updates of the Members Infoo pages , with Bios , Piccies and all sorts ! Sadly Pene Azul who used to look after that side of things got sidetracked by family Problems a while back !

link to photo - a good idea.

I used to have long meaningful conversations with a couple every year at Chippenham and they knew my name but it took 6 years to actually have a name for him (but not her). Names can be confusing, I am occasionally confused with Pete Grassby in various ways but never by sight.

Our general policy is that a thread title should describe the contents of a thread; and I think it's very important to word the title of an obit thread very carefully. There's not a whole lot of space, but you can usually fit in a one-word description of the person who died - "Comedian Phil Harris" makes a lot more impact than just "Phil Harris." Add the name of the country, if it fits and makes sense.

If there's no date of death, we try to edit one in later. When you post dates at Mudcat, be mindful that we are in an international community -
  • 2/1/09 is very confusing here.
  • You could say Jan 2, 2009,
  • but I find 2 Jan 2009 is very clear and takes up less space.
We add dates to obituaries because it helps make a 2002 obituary make sense if it's refreshed. We also try to add event dates for festivals and gig listings, when it makes sense.

The first message of the obituary should include a summary of the person's life, not just a link to a newspaper article that may go dead fairly soon.

Oh, and it it's a non-music obit, don't worry about it and don't break the discussion by posting messages about how the thread should be in the BS section. All obits start out up top in the music section, and we move the appropriate ones down below when we see them. No big deal.

I hope I didn't start this by that obit for the guitar thread. If so I am sorry Joe. I was emotionally attached to that guitar becuase it's owner is such a hero of mine it felt to me like the loss of my hero all over again.
Sorry
JT

I don't think that was a problem, JT, don't worry about it. It was a worthy subject as much as someone losing their instruments to thievery or what have you.

The only thing I can add to the photo thing is, to my knowledge, a lot of the obits are for folks who are not members of Mudcat. I like to know who they are all all, but I would want a Mudcat Memorial page to be for members. Maybe, if we ever have one again, there could be an adjunct one for musicians/artists who are not Mudcat members, but who are big influences in music?

Well, the guitar obit was on the border. The thread tags serve an indexing function - so when they're really abused and serve to confuse people, we change them. Don't worry about it, though - if it's wrong, we'll change it. The guitar obit won't be changed because it wasn't going to confuse anybody, because the word "guitar" was in the thread title.

Here's an example - I found a thread today that had the title Obit: Mark Sallings(RIP). I changed it to Obit: blues harpist Mark Sallings (Feb 2009). I hope the thread originator doesn't mind. We have had very few complaints about thread title editing in recent years (since a certain individual left our community) - we try to preserve most of the original title, and add to it for clarity.

When dates are confusing, we change them - if we can figure them out. There is absolutely no possibility of figuring gnu out.... ;-)

Please make sure the obit is for a person actually deceased. A gun, club or knife can make such a difference in confidence level on this point.

My wife thinks I am dead when I take off my socks.

Well, I guess I'd better not tell 'em.
Let's just say I have a lot of respect for DADGBE's wife.
