Subject: Recent record purchases
From: Will Fly

Recently I've been indulging myself by going back in time and buying records (CD and vinyl) that I never bought at the time that they first appeared, for one reason or another. And eBay, and occasionally Amazon, have been coming up trumps with opportunities for doing this.

I mentioned, in another thread, the joy of getting hold of Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Since then, I've been acquiring:

- Morris On - vinyl, and in excellent condition
- Grandson of Morris On - CD
- RT: The Life And Times of Richard Thompson (5 CD set & book)
- Chasing Daisies - R. Crumb & his Cheap Suit Serenaders -CD
- Singing In The Bathtub - R. Crumb again - CD
- Penguin Eggs - Nic Jones - vinyl, and in good nic
- Back Deck Blues - the Boat Band - double CD

An excellent way to get rid of one's gig money...

My most recent acquisition is brand new. I got the McCalman's new CD 'Coming Home' last Saturday (one day before the official release, but they brought some on their Danish tour ;-)). It's an excellent buy.

Jordi Savall, Hesperion XXI (et al) - Francisco Javier : La Route de l'Orient (third in the Alia Vox ultra deluxe hardback book packages; an expensive hobby, but make hay whilst the sun shines, or when MDT are doing them at a special price...)

Peter Bellamy - Fair England's Shore (double CD bringing together Fair England's Shore, Mainly Norfolk & The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate.)

Back Door - Askin' the Way (2003 reunion of the original trio with new & old material exquisitely rendered...)

Montserrat Figueras - Tarquinio Merula : Arie e Capricci (Newly remastered deluxe Alia Vox edition of this classic recording...)

The Fall - Perverted By Language (2005 Castle double edition of the last classic Fall album, albeit post-Riley, but before Brix's pop sensibilities had kicked in. Replete with extras, including the Peel Session from March 23rd 1983 on which they performed the definitive version of Garden...)

And last but not least...

Dr Strangely Strange - Kip of the Serenes (new remastered edition on Hux - lovingly remastered, complete lyrics & copious notes plus choice extras, including a chorus of Ranzo...)

Buy is a very strong word!

The latest CDs I have acquired by various means have been:

Ragged but Right (Arnie Naimen & Friends)- Down Harmony Road (only listened to once, but we're off in the van this weekend)
Debby McClatchy - Chestnut Ridge (absolutely love this!)

We were supporting Debby McClatchy & Appalchian Magic on Friday night in case you couldn't tell!

I've also recently come by "Potter's Field" by Joe Solo which is a collection of harrowing songs about the First World War, written or adapted by Joe.

I bought "Delivery Boy" by Truckstop Honeymoon..... really off beat banjo driven alt. country, absolutely fab!

"Along The Miner's Rows" by Bill Adair. Superbly sung and played songs about Auchengeich Mining Disaster (it's the 50th anniversary this year). Mainly written by Bill.

A demo CD by One Stone (Wendy Arrowsmith and Becks Findlay.... both of this Parish). Excellent mix of trad and self penned songs, well sung & played. Can't wait for this to be commercially available.

This is in the last couple of weeks.... I'm sure I've forgotten some!

Paul

Brother Crow - 'One for Sorrow' and 'Hollow Hills' were acquired when they played the Raggalds.

Both excellent and can't wait for the next one

I dare say tomorrow I will complete my Coope Boyes & Simpson collection to thank them for playing at Queensbury Music Festival.

Not forgetting the 2005 CD issue of the first Egg album. Of all the things in life we should be thankful for, Action Records in Preston is easily in the top five.

I got Uncle Earl's Waterloo: Tennessee and The Carolina Chocolate Drop's Heritage recently, plus a Carter Family double compilation. All good buys.

Another Norman and Nancy Blake CD purchase was crushed by that fine and august organisation The Post Office in transport and now seems to be unavailable! (:>(

There's a brand new CD out from Tom Rush called "What I know" that I plan to order today. Also the new release by our own Dan Milner - Irish Pirate Ballads and other songs of the sea
is on the list too..
