Subject: Lyr Add: RUBIN'S TRAIN
From: Barry Finn
Date: 03 Jul 99 - 03:12 AM

Ol Rubin made a train & he put it on a track
He ran it to the Lord knows where
Oh me, oh my ran it to the Lord knows where

Should been in town when Rubin's train went down
You could hear that whistle blow 100 miles
Oh me, oh my you could hear the whistle blow 100 miles

Last night I lay in jail had no money to go my bail
Lord how it sleeted & it snowed
Oh me, oh my Lord how it sleeted & it snowed

I've been to the East, I've been to the West
I'm going where the chilly winds don't blow
Oh me, oh my I'm going where the chilly winds don't blow

Oh the train that I ride is 100 coaches long
You can hear the whistle blow 100 miles
Oh me, oh my you can hear the whistle blow 100 miles

Repeat 1st verse
^^

I think that may be it, hope so anyway. Barry

By the way, Paul, I hope you don't get scared away by the nameless post. Seems to me that it's perfectly appropriate fo ask for the song here, and I'm glad Barry posted it for all of us. Maybe the poster was just trying to be helpful, but it had a tone that seemed to imply you shouldn't request a song like that here. The song fits here darn well.

Yeah, Paul. If it weren't for old timey country, a lot of us here would be forced to try and butcher Irish songs. --seed

Thanks Joe-BSeed I used to do this with a dulcimer player/maker friend of mine and didn't know that it was "country". I tend to ignore song classifications and sing what I like. Besides> at this time of the year I have plenty of good ole 'Merican I can butcher instead of taking my singing out on the British Isles. :{D Paul

Holy Modal Rounders add this great verse:

I got myself a blade, laid Ruben in the shade,
I'm startin' me a graveyard of my own.
Oh, me, oh lordy my, startin' me a graveyard of my own.

Subject: Lyr Add: OL' REUBEN'S (Wade Mainer)
From: Gene
Date: 09 Jul 99 - 08:13 PM

Found this version by
Wade Mainer & The Sons of the Mountaineeers
Lyrics best as I can make out are below...

OL' REUBEN'S
Wade Mainer

On the first of the year
Ol' Reuben come up here
And she never has moved out since that day

I took my razor blade
I laid Reuben in the shade
And I started me a graveyard of my own

Lawd knows ... of my own

If I die a railroad man
You can bury me in the sand
Where I can hear old number nine as she goes by

Yonder comes that train
And its' number's number nine
And I'm goin' to catch that train and ride the blinds

Lord knows ... and ride the blinds

What did the Hobo say to the Bum
Get any cornbread, save me some
For I never was so hungry in my life

What did the Hobo say to the Tramp
The roads is muddy and the woods is damp
And I can't get back home this ol' way

Lord knows ... this ol' way

Number nine had a wreck
Killed my baby, I'd expect
For I thought I hee'rd it say, say Oh Lord

Oh the tears in my eyes
I wish that I could die
For I'm tryin to read this letter from my home

If I die a railroad man
You can bury me in the sand
Where I can hear old number nine as she goes by

Lord know ... as she goes by

Gene Thanks a lot! I have never heard this version of the song. It might be nice to play around with the verses of both versions and kind of mix them together somehow. If I sing a new version it does that make me a "singer/songwriter"? :{D
