For 40 years our own Pete Waddon (Twitchett) has created beautiful folk music, told folk stories, radio shows, performing for children in schools, traveling and performing all over England, a real example of what a folk artist is and should be. His CD - In from the cold is a masterpiece IMO. I just wanted to take the time to thank Pete for so many years of great music. Anyone want to share some Pete stories with us here is a good chance to put him on the spot. I was just listening to "The gentleman soldier" wonderful work my friend

God Bless you Pete

I've seen Pete Twitchett perform at the Milk Maid in Bury St Edmunds, Fantastic performance and storytelling. I've also had the pleasure of sitting in on a sing around in the local pub which really showed off his diversity and wit! Check the album out if you get the chance!

Keep doing it Pete

Pete is one of the good ones. There's something limiting about communicating on a computer screen with these little black squiggly characters we type out. Just as in music, it only occasionally happens when the warmth of a person comes through the screen or out through the apeakers. Miraculously, the person is there despite the inherent limitations of the medium. I've come to know Pete through the kitchen table thread, and I mean KNOW him. I admire his generosity of spirit and his modesty. Perhaps someday I'll get to hear him in person.

Kudos to you Pete, and to you Dan for doing these threads.

Jerry

I used to go to Waddon Folk Club in the late 60s to mid 70s, hitch-hiking up from Dorking.

My one abiding memory from those days was him singing Battle of New Orleans unaccompanied, no big deal now, but a revelation to me then - you don't HAVE to play the guitar with a song, just 'cos you can. Up to then I only heard ballads sung unaccompanied.

Thanks for that, Pete. (and the songs been in my repertoire ever since in a variety of arrangements.)

Remeber his folk club in croydon in the 70's. Morris danced, I think as a guest with Wheatsheaf at their Christmas party one snowy night. Pete had a magic lantern show, I remeber them performing Three Jolly Rogues of Lynn to his singing.

Hello,

I dunno.....there I was quietly minding my own business and cruising the threads when I did a double take! A thread with my name on it! Gawsh.....

All I can really say is, "Thanks!" It was good to read the comments made.

Yes, John of Kemsing, I do remember Four Square Circle!

Yes, Tug, the shadow puppets were great fun to do. We took them all over and enjoyed them immensely!

Folkwaller.....what price your silence?   :0)

Jerry....what can I say?

I'm not very good at this promotion lark, but, if you want to hear what Old Dude has been listening to, there are some samples http://cdbaby.com/cd/petetwitchett

Thanks folks,

Best wishes,

Peter

Hello Deirdre, Hello Wendy,

Good to hear from you.

I tried to do a blue clicky, but it didn't work for some reason! Perhaps some-one can try from their computer...mine doesn't seem to be playing ball at the moment. Could be the crumbs from the hot buttered toast in Jerry's kitchen!

The link is http://cdbaby.com/cd/petetwitchett

CDBaby is a good site with lots of goodies hidden away and you can get the CD from them.

It's good to know that people remember the Waddon with fondness. Although I moved out of the area to pastures new, the club is still going strong in Croydon. Check them out if you are at a loose end in Croydon on a Monday evening!

www.croydonfolksongclub.org.uk

Must be the computer....still won't clickify! Harrumph!

Best wishes,

Peter

Hi Pete,
Horniman rag! My dad met my mother in Horniman museum, she was 14, he was 17. They married in 1943 when they were both in the RAF, last year they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, he is 89 and mum 85.
Do you remember the clock in the museum, I think it was at 4 oclock each day the 12 disciples process past Jesus, all of them bow to him except Judas who turns the other way!It was one of my favourite days out, the other was Crystal Palce park and the statues(huge) of the dinaseurs.

Hello Wendy,

I haven't been to the museum now for far too long. I must make a return visit. I am, however, assured that the clock has recently been overhauled and still has the procession of disciples every day at 4 p.m.

It has fond memories for me too. One of the benefits of being on the 194 bus route was that it was easily accessible to us!

Best wishes,

Peter

-------------local sessions, the Greyhound at Flempton I think. He sang a sad song about a minstrel who had a broken string on his banjo. At the end of the session I introduced myself and asked Pete to play the song again for my recorder so I could go away and learn it, I haven't done so but the point I make is that he was only too willing to ablige. He was very friendly. Since that occasion we meet fairly regularly, he sings, I listen and we may even be ------------------sorry, someone at the door.

Peter is also a regular at the local Friday afternoon cafe folk session he believes as I do in taking folk music to the people and slowly but surely we are winning them over and we have a very nice folky afternoon sipping coffee and tea. Peter also----------sorry, got to get ready to go to Ely.

----------is only too willing to give guitar lessons to anyone who may be interested, even the lady at the cafe says she wants to learn. If its of interest Ely was fantastic, Kevin Dempsey and Joe Broughton, do they come any better.
Pete and I did play at the school we sat on the playing field with a group of pupils and Pete sang and entertained, they sang as one, I listened. It was wonderful.
So, I'm getting to know Pete and if you would like too as well, buy his cd it is just great.
Tomorrow we are being recorded by Suffolk Radio at the cafe or at least Pete probably is, I just listen.
After 40 years Peter Twitchett is still a folk singers folk singer and long may it be so.
Can I have cash this time Pete.

Yes....you are right....I enjoy taking folk out into the community. This has lead to some amazing and challenging moments....like singing in a boxcar on a very cold public holiday and doing the interval entertainment at a disco!

Best wishes,

Peter

In the summer Billy and I have " home" concerts in a marquee in the garden, Billy does a bar b q, everyone brings a bottle and we invite someone to do a concert. Very informal and lovely people. How about it Peter? We are not far from you and we could invite mudcatters who live within a car drive to come and swell our numbers.

Hi

Don't know if you remember me but I was Rip Rippingale's 2nd wife. Havn't heard anything of you in yonks but I now live in Coventry. I remember well the weekend we came down for the weekend as you had asked Rip to do support for a concert in a huge marquee for the Scouts. The Ian Campbell folk group were headlining and then because you wouldn't let me play I decided I'd better sing so did my very first singing in public with Rip. ( Nothing like jumping in at the deep end. )

The next day we went to Southend for the day, went on the pier where you did a recording in a booth, can't remember if it was you and Rip together.

By the way did you ever learn to drive.

Oh happy memories.

I'm glad that people were able to listen to the piece on Radio Suffolk. They did us proud with a very decent plug for the music as well as the event.

We are lucky to have a thriving scene in our part of the world.

If you are ever in East Anglia, look us up!
