Subject: Your Top Ten!
From: Sleepy Rosie
Date: 07 Mar 09 - 08:30 PM

For those of you who browse sites like YouTube or similar online musical spaces, I'd like to know what your personal 'top ten' videos or sound recordings are? Doesn't have to be ten, that was just 'a' number.
But any links to favourites would be welcome, as I'm still in the muddled business of discovering folk music for myself.

I'll contribute to this thread myself soon, if it actually gains any life, but I'm still a' gathering songs at the mo'.

One of my favourite channels on YouTube is that of Thespadecaller. As well as wonderful music his videos include the most beautiful artwork and paintings. Also, they make you think.

This Land is Your Land - Woody Guthrie

I just wanted to share this and hope that other people may have exceptional videos that they can share.
Threads combined and this one retitled per request. ~Mod

I hadn't noticed this thread before. I've just started a thread called amazing videos, probably not the best title really. I wonder if it is worth us combining the two threads.

I didn't know about "Thespadecaller" ~ very nice work, and thanks for the referral.

I recommend the extensive collection of guitar-instruction videos posted on YouTube by "Deltabluestips," aka "the headless scouser." Aside from their educational value, they also provide some excellent and highly listenable playing.

Another notable master of acoustic-guitar-and-vocal, who also never shows his face, is "Fretkillr," who has been discussed at length here at Mudcat.

I would also advise anyone and everyone to look up Theresa Andersson, especially her two or three latest offerings, since she has become a one-woman band. One is entitled "Na Na Na," another somethng about "Birds Fly."

Hey Eanjay, well I never noticed your thread neither, so I guess that means both our titles were not specific enough!

If the mods want to retitle this, it might be better as 'Favourite Online Folk Music Videos'?

Just starting to work my way through the popmeister Sinisters 'Top Ten!' links...

One of my Favourites is

From "Flipping the Whale" (2000), written and directed by Sean Guinan, produced by Joshua Eckhardt and Sean Guinan. With Eddie Shin (Gilmore Girls, Dr. Miracles), Amy Bakos and Sean Guinan. The song was written by Cyril Tawney and recorded by the Golden Ring, a short-lived Chicago folk group from the early 70s.

This is NOT folk but it is exceptional and if you have never heard Philip Achille play harmonica then listen to this, it is a real treat. My husband plays harmonica and heard Philip Achille play at one of the NHL festivals (also spoke to him and I'm jealous!).

classical harmonica

I'm busy working my way through the links above. I think my husband will be interested in the guitar-instruction videos.
