Beverley Beck Shanty festival 2009 cancelled
23/ 24th May 2009

HOWEVER DO NOT DESPAIR WE HAVE A PLAN!!

Due to the unavailability of funding the Beverley Beck Shanty Festival 2009 will not take place this year

On those dates it is proposed to run The Beckside Heritage Festival were there will be boats on the beck including Syntan, Amy Howson, Spider T, Onesimus, Southcliffe and Comrade.

It is envisaged that some of the boats will be available to sing and play on.

We will also use Beckhead and the Community area for dancing and singing weather permitting.

Note:There will be no booked paid acts, but anyone who wishes to play and /or sing and dance on a volunteer basis will be made more than welcome.

Camping is available on Beverley Leisure Centre Flemingate by appointment with john.s.taylor@eastriding.gov.uk this will be at ten pound per night.

I will be contacting personally all last years artists and would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Beverley Barge Preservation Society to thank all those who took part last year.

If anyone is interested in attending the Heritage weekend please conact me by PM. Or telephone/email if you have it.

Ossonflags (Mick McGarry)

Sorry to hear this Mick .... really enjoyed last years event and hoped that it would continue. Sadly not - I'll have to get my yearly Beverley "fix" another way.
If you are able to arrange a get together of some kind - please let me know.

Nutty
Have another read at Micks first post. You will find that the Shanty Festival has become part of the Heratage Festival the only down side is that Mick has not got any funding. The Pubs will be open and thier will be a song, tune and a dance or two on the 23rd, 24th,of May. In fact it wouldnt suprise me if a few people turn up on Friday 22nd to practise drinking beer.

Mick,
I owe you a tenner. Loved the CD. Thanks a million for last year and I'll bust a gut to be there anyway. If the money is going on the boats being there and they'll all get some decent diesel money then fair doos. If Southcliffe makes it I'll be crewing anyway. If you can screw Robin some petrol money I might be able to persuade him to come.

Main problem in getting boats there is having to pay for the bridges on t' river to be lifted on a weekend. If they can come on the Friday and go back on the Monday it won't cost 'em owt.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for that Steve, glad you enjoyed the CD. Nev is handling the boat end of it and he will have sorted that out.

If we get enough there on the Friday I hope to run summatt on the Syntan anyrode.

The syntan is great for playing and singing on. If there are less people then more of us will be able to squeeze onboard!

it reminds me of a story I heard about a Pirate festival on the west coast of America, a folk duo called Pint and Dale were going to perform there and one of friends got a phonecall to say that the festival was cancled because it was raining what a bunch sissy pirates scared of rain.

I guess the Maes (not 'barmy' but Raving!) will be dancing in the afternoon as we were last year, Ossenflags will let us know - but we'll stick around for a session too after the dancing.

Are there any other dance sides going?

Good on yer.

A fine example of what I (and others) have been predicting. In the current economic (and meteorological) climate, bigger festivals will struggle and some disappear. And the DIY brigade will assert the true Folk traditions instead.
