I can remember the hawiian band at the Prospect 46 years ago, they used to play music to rugby songs and everybody was singing the atmosphere was unbelievable. About 15 years ago I was drinking in a pub in New Cross and was talking to an unfortunate guy who had been involved in a road accident and was partially crippled with some brain damage he told me his name was Butch and he used to be a member of that band and also some years earlier before the accident the Queen had requested them to appear at her garden party. Unfortunately I have not seen the guy since.

Used to be the "Prospect of Whitby" pub in the docklands was great on a saturday but that was about 35 years ago ! They had an Hawian band there almost evry Saturday night.

Can you remember if that was the Pearl Hawaiians (the late Bert Scott) who were from the East End? I recently came across a cassette of them made circa 1980 and they were very good!

Eric - I can't believe they were still there 35 years ago - I used to listen to them every Saturday 54 years ago!

Guitar, steel guitar & ukelele - 2 lads from Stepney and one from Whitechapel. The only thing Hawaiian about them was their shirts.

Anne & I got engaged to their music - romantic Hawaii - and the smell of the spice warehouses.

There is the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain , not really traditional Hawaiian music, but certainly fun.

There has been a resurgence of interest in Hawaiian music , in all it's forms, over the last twenty years or so, both in the Islands and on the Mainland--as Barry has astutely pointed out, the slack key guitar, though maybe not well known abroad, is probably at the center of the revival. The uke has made a huge comeback, too, and, while the Hawaiian steel guitar is an integral part of the tradition as well, there are a lot fewer players.

Helen, Steel drums are not used in Hawaiian music

Though steel guitar may be used by a few much more of what is played is the guitar with the strings tuned by slacking them slightly, hence the Hawaiian style of "Slack Key" style of guitar playing which is very beautiful & at times extermely haunting.

Has anyone seen any Hawaiian folk in London? Are there any Hawaiian acts knocking about the big smoke? Am thinking more of a couple of voices and a ukele/steel guitar than seven guys with steel drums et al....but open to any leads!!
