Subject: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 11 Mar 09 - 10:18 AM For 29 years Ron Olesko has provided a radio show called "Traditions" that has featured the masters of folk music for everyone to enjoy. Many of our mudcat masters have been featured on his show also. He has worked these many years to keep the music that we all love alive and in the media though his radio show, his writing, his interviews, his lectures. A scholar of traditional music Ron will answer questions about artists, and songs and stories. In short Ron has done so much to support traditional music and the artists that I thought he should be recognized for all he has done. If anyone has some good Ron stories here is a chance to put him on the spot :-) Seriously Ron thank you for your work and know that we love you for it |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: bobad Date: 11 Mar 09 - 10:25 AM I endorse what you said about Ron and his dedication to keeping the music and musicians alive. He has a terrific show which I listen to often and enjoy his opinions here on Mudcat even though he is wrong when he says that New York bagels are better than those from Montreal. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 11 Mar 09 - 10:29 AM Yes bobad but he is right about the New York Hot Dogs ... best in the world |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 11 Mar 09 - 11:43 AM Thanks, that is humbling. I'm just a fan with too much time on my hands and I'm a student, not a scholar. I've been lucky to be in the right place at the right time. ...and New York bagels are better!!!! Montreal bagels taste more like cake. :) Thanks again. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Mar 09 - 12:07 PM In addition to all the nice things already noted, another reason why I hold Ron in such high regard is that he's a Mets fan... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: SINSULL Date: 11 Mar 09 - 12:36 PM There is another Mets fan in this world? WOW! I catch Traditions only occasionally but follow Ron's comments in the political threads. Interesting man. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 11 Mar 09 - 12:45 PM Mets fan good grief, now I have to take back all the nice things I said LOL |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 11 Mar 09 - 12:53 PM Yeah, other than the Mets thing - Bill Buckner, Mookie Wilson in '86 - Ron is a helluva guy. Thank you, Ron. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Deckman Date: 11 Mar 09 - 01:38 PM Hey Ron ... Does you radio station "live stream" your show. If so, post the call numbers of the station and I'll set up my puter to listen to your show. Also ... when do you broadcast ... and what time zone? CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: SINSULL Date: 11 Mar 09 - 02:22 PM MOOOOOOOOKIE! Those were the days. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 11 Mar 09 - 08:49 PM I'm on every other Sunday from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time on WFDU-FM - www.wfdu.fm. I started the show in 1980 and when my kids came along in the early 90's, Bill Hahn joined me as co-host and we alternate Sundays. I will be on this Sunday 3/15. Thanks again for the kind notes. My head is swelling. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Peace Date: 11 Mar 09 - 09:45 PM Ron is a wonderful guy. AND he has a great show. I need to know: What do Mets fans DO when they get together? There are three of you--that was a surprise to me . . . . |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 11 Mar 09 - 10:13 PM I will never be ashamed to be a Mets fan and we are NOT few in number. Right now, I am sitting in my chair from Shea Stadium and counting the days until our new home opens. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: katlaughing Date: 11 Mar 09 - 11:35 PM Way back when, maybe 2000? Ron asked Mudcatters to send him songs, stories, etc. for a special Christmas show he was doing. I cannot find the thread for that, but I did find the one I posted of the story which I read for his show that year: Golden Cobwebs. I was very honoured and excited to be included and was thrilled when we listened to the program. I've always enjoyed the show when I hear it. Thanks, again, Ron! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 12 Mar 09 - 12:37 PM Ron, 3 mets fans my friend ... ahhhh maybe 2 now after last season :-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 12 Mar 09 - 01:01 PM Many years ago I had the pleasure of being a guest on Ron's show. I'd not met him before, but he was very warm and welcoming and immediately made me feel right at home. A good man. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Mar 09 - 01:04 PM In all my days I've heard a lot of comments about Met fans, but this is the first time I have EVER heard ANYONE mention a scarcity of support. Last season, we had the second highest total attendance in majors and the third highest attendance in 2007. Take a look at our attendance figures over the years, some supposedly "major league" cities would sell their soul to have such support. Comeon folks, if you are going to knock the Mets, you can certainly do better than that!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 12 Mar 09 - 01:05 PM Once again, my thanks for all the kind comments. Doing the radio show and my other activities with folk music have enabled me to meet some of the finest people in the world. We are lucky to have such a community and I am honored to be a part of it! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Mar 09 - 02:29 PM An anagram of Ron Olesko is 'Onlookers'. Make of that what you will;-) A better one, though maybe linguisticaly inaccurate, is "e' Ron's kool" :D (eG) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Cool Beans Date: 12 Mar 09 - 03:09 PM Meet the Mets, meet the Mets Step right up and greet the Mets. The Mets are really slugging that ball, Hitting those home runs over the wall.... -- That's the song they played when the Mets were brand new. I forget how the rest of it goes. Anyway, Ron is good peeps, his baseball orientation notwithstanding. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 12 Mar 09 - 03:27 PM Well Ron your point is well taken, Hey I am a Pirates fan. so I have a lot of room to talk LOL .... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 12 Mar 09 - 03:30 PM Great radio show, great guy, wonderful concert promoter and a pleasure to work with, knowledgeable and passionate about folk music and other worthy causes...but as a Red Sox fan, I just can't get over that Mets thing. On the bright side, he's not a fan of the American League team from NY whose name I cannot bring myself to say. Yay Ron! Seamus |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 12 Mar 09 - 03:46 PM Olddude: I thought there was something unbelievably intelligent and God-fearing about you. Now I know why. I've been a Pittsburgh Pirates fan since the 50's. My crowning moment was when I was at Columbia University in 1960, the only Pirate fan in my dorm, when Bill Mazeroski hit the series winning home run against the Spankees. Sometimes life is sweet. Sorry for the thread drift. Ron is sweet, too. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: Art Thieme Date: 12 Mar 09 - 04:46 PM Another guy named Ron ---- Santo ---- will never forgive the mets!! But he actually had some nice things to say about the new stadium. Onward and upward... Art |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Masters - Ron Olesko From: olddude Date: 12 Mar 09 - 06:09 PM seriously though there isn't a smarter or nicer person than Ron and his show is amazing and has done so much for us and our music thank you Ron |
