Subject: Plucker English? Anyone Know anything?
From: Jayto

I have heard about a man named Plucker English my entire life. He is the man that Mose Rager learned alot of the Choking guitar style that has came to be known as the Western Kentucky thumbpicking style. I know alot of people that knew of him but very little. Is there anyone on here that knows anything about him? I am searching around for anything I can find about him but there seems to be very little out there. Anything at all would be cool even if it's something I already know. So if you do know anything at all please let me know.
thanks
JT

When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was a question about an obscure dialect.

LOL I can see where you thought that. Funny I have heard his name for so long it didn't even cross my mind. You know Plucker refers to plucking the strings or playing the guitar. So being a guitarist I guess I speak a form of plucker english lol

Jayto, I found this reference by going to Google Advanced Search and entering Plucker English is tne exact words box.

http://books.google.com/books?id=3x4TUwtiCZgC&pg=RA1-PA115&lpg=RA1-PA115&dq=%22Plucker+English%22&source=bl&ots=qIwOrBsAgi&sig=R0yI5K5DYHYGuOdJVUzcoSMkGWQ&hl=en&ei=ctO6SeHvK4GCtwfy-LnkDw&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=9&ct=result

As it happens, the former superintendent of schools in my city had the surname Plucker. So guys, it's a surname, and a family once gave it to their son. Get over it.

Several publications mention somebody named Lester "Plucker" English.

Note I am reviving an old thread.

"Plucker" English is my Grandfather, my Mom's Dad. His real name is Lester English and had several brothers and sisters. He and his brother used to play a 12 string guitar, one standing behind the other, and NEVER crossed strings. The most phenomenal thing I had ever seen. I know he taught Merle Travis the 5 finger style of guitar on his front porch with Mose Rager, Ike Everly (Don and Phil's dad, and who are my cousins)and a few others. And believe it or not, he performed on Channel 34 (WTVX) in Vero Beach Florida every Friday night until the day he died. If you are interested in talking, please feel free to call (423) 533-2221. Thank you !
