Here's another circle-or maybe it's a spiral:

In my next life I'd do better proof reading my writing.

I should have written "...there are plenty times...etc etc" etc.

Yes, Stringsinger, and the beat goes on and on and there's plenty times that we gotta move when the spirit says move even if we don't like the beat the drummer's puttin down.

Circles are prevalent today. Witness the circular argument.

If we are not stronger than the enemy then the enemy will be stronger then us. Then we will have to be stronger than the enemy which means the enemy will try to be stronger than us.

The above is called "foreign policy".

a donut is a perfect symbol of the harmony of existence - circular, sweet, and empty within, yet filled by an enormous space - the Universe itself.
-GUEST,Nurse Ratched.

Is that it? Life is like a donut? That's it?

Wwll, there are donuts and there are donuts. I prefer the glazed ones myself. Or the kind with some jelly inside.

I don't know what that means metaphysically. But they're likely to make you heavy.

From: Rapparee

SWEET SURVIVOR
Peter Yarrow -Barry Mann -Cynthia Weil- Silver Dawn - ASCAP

You have asked me why the days fly by so quickly
And why each one feels no different from the last
And you say that you are fearful for the future
And you have grown suspicious of the past
And you wonder if the dreams we shared together
Have abandoned us or we abandoned them
And you cast about and try to find new meaning
So that you can feel that closeness once again.

Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend
Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end.
Carry on my sweet survivor,
Though you know that something's gone
For everything that matters carry on.

You remember when you felt each person mattered
When we all had to care or all was lost
But now you see believers turn to cynics
And you wonder was the struggle worth the cost
Then you see someone too young to know the difference
And a veil of isolation in their eyes
And inside you know you've got to leave them something
Or the hope for something better slowly dies.

Carry on my sweet survivor, carry on my lonely friend
Don't give up on the dream, and don't you let it end.
Carry on my sweet survivor, you've carried it so long
So it may come again, carry on
Carry on, carry on.

From: Rapparee
Date: 16 Mar 09 - 11:50 AM

THE GREAT MANDALA (The Wheel of Life)
Peter Yarrow- Pepamar Music Corp.- ASCAP

So I told him that he'd better shut his mouth
And do his job like a man.
And he answered "Listen, Father,
I will never kill another."
He thinks he's better
than his brother that died
What the hell does he think he's doing
To his father who brought him up right?

Chorus:
Take your place on The Great Mandala
As it moves through your brief moment of time.
Win or lose now you must choose now
And if you lose you're only losing your life.

Tell the jailer not to bother
With his meal of bread and water today.
He is fasting 'til the killing's over
He's a martyr, he thinks he's a prophet.
But he's a coward, he's just playing a game
He can't do it, he can't change it
It's been going on for ten thousand years

(Chorus)

Tell the people they are safe now
Hunger stopped him, he lies still in his cell.
Death has gagged his accusations

We are free now, we can kill now,
We can hate now, now we can end the world
We're not guilty, he was crazy
And it's been going on for ten thousand years!

Take your place on The Great Mandala
As it moves through your brief moment of time.
Win or lose now you must choose now
And if you lose you've only wasted your life.

While sympathetic to the peace of the comatose, as a medical officer it's my duty to intervene and apply mouth to mouth on occasion.

Recently I encountered a rotund object in Ward 13. As the old Sanskrit sloka said, "akhanda mandalakaram byaptam jena characharam" - endless, round-formed, permeating all things moving and unmoving.

No, this was not the spherical, all-pervasive awareness of the Hindu universe, it was a rather large immovable object which my quick actions found to be alive. a little prodding revealed a certain catter, who shall remain nameless, but can be recognised by their obsession with donuts, and while the sound emitting from this object could have been mistaken for an "Ooommmm" I believed it to be a cross between a circular snore and a death rattle.

At once, I lept upon the prone drone, thumping the rising chest rhythmically by jumping carefully on it, as I breathed life into the old circle of flesh.

Miraculously, this man-dala came to life and started sputtering loquaciously about Jamieson's and jam donuts.

aah, the foolishness of the long distance ruminator.. but all life is precious, and the endless circle of birth, death and rebirth will yet be unbroken, as a donut is a perfect symbol of the harmony of existence - circular, sweet, and empty within, yet filled by an enormous space - the Universe itself.

N.R.
(feeling a little philosophical, after bolting a few circular cocktails...)

**

For some reason, there's been a lot of posts on this thread about pies. That reminds me of this old Mudcat thread:

Lyr Req: Oh my, I want a piece of pie

**

Here's a children's playground rhyme that I posted on that thread:

A B C
abc, easy as 123, my momma takes care of me, my daddy watches mtv, ooh ahh i want a piece of pie, pie to sweet i wanna piece of meat, meat to rough i wanna ride a bus, bus too full i wanna ride a bull, bull not black i want my money back, money back too green i wanna jelly bean, jelly bean not cooked i wanna read a book, book not read i wanna go to bed, bed not made i want some lemonade, lemonade too sour i wanna take a shower, shower too cool i wanna go to school, school too dumb i wanna suck my thumb, thumb to dirty i wanna ride a birdie, birdie too slow and thats all i know, so close your eyes and count to ten, whoever messes up starts all over again, 12345678910...noone messed up so thats the end!

Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnaval balloon
Like a carousell that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking allong the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

GOIN IN CIRCLES

(Anita Poree and Jerry Peters; 1969)

I'm an ever rollin' wheel,
without a destination real.
I'm an ever spinning top,
whirling around till I drop.
Oh but what am I to do,
my mind is in a whirlpool.
Give me a little hope,
one small thing to cling to.
You got me going in circles
(oh round and round I go)
You got me going in circles
(oh round and round I go,
I'm spun out over you)

I'm a faceless clock,
with timeless hopes that never stop.
Lord but I feel that way,
of my soul. My soul isn't stained.
Oh but what am I to do,
my mind is in a whirlpool.
Give me a little hope,
one small thing to cling to.
You got me going in circles
(oh round and round I go)
You got me going in circles
(oh round and round I go)
I'm spun out over you
(I need you baby)
over you
(I need you baby)
spun out over you.
(I need you baby,
I need you baby baby)
I'm spun
(I need you baby)
I said I'm spun out over you
(I need you baby)
Spun out over you
(I need you baby,
I need you baby, I need you baby)

Thanks to all who have posted to this thread thus far.

Now that I've been resuscitated-in a manner of speaking-I'll add a few more circles to this word collage.

**

Here's one of my favorite poems:

He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout—
But love and I had the wit to win—
We drew a circle that took him in.
-Edwin Markham

And here's another poem by Edwin Markham that I like, though I would respectfully amend it so that it refers to both genders:

There is a destiny that makes us brothers
None goes his way alone
All that we send into the lives of others
Comes back into our own.
-Edwin Markham

That's ok, Bill. They're on my list of food plants to add to our farm, but "Maine law prohibits the planting and cultivation of currants and gooseberries in most of southern Maine, and prohibits the planting and cultivation of European black currants and their hybrids anywhere within the state" so I must wander ribe-less for now, until the fear of white pine blister rust subsides. You may be able to plant the round beauties depending on your State's laws.

Now what were we talking about? Circles.

Absolutely a discriminatory thread.

The simple circle is described by:

r2 = x2 + y2

And the simple sphere by:

r2 = x2 + y2 + z2

People here are ignoring, or discussing without understanding of the most trivial sort, the entire class commonly (and insultingly) called "supercircles" or "superspheres" described as:

rn = xn + yn

and:

rn = xn + yn + zn

(or in the latter case)

rn = xn + yn + zn + tn

In as discriminatory and derogatory comments as have been made here invariably arise from insufficient familiarity with the many fine members of a class other than the limited ones with which the speaker is intimately familiar, it is to be suggested that each and every participant here should immediately construct - as a minimum - at least one "circle" of the kind

r4 = x4 + y4

and become familiar with it's true characteristics so that future discussions can be more informed.

(For extra credit, or for those who just wish to show off a little, n=9, or some other value, might be used as well.)

EQUAL RIGHTS - AND DUE RESPECT - FOR ALL THE KINDS OF CIRCLES!

(and for superspheres, blobs, and objects of indeterminate construction.)

John

Pi

So that is why pie is round. Because it rhymes with it must also look like Pi!

WOOT! Another mystery solved.

But why can't pie be square? (or Pi be squared for that matter) That's when things get all cobblered up. Start messing around with geometrical and mathematical inevitabilities of puddings and the world will turn upside down.

Eleven kinds of rhubarb and lots of live circles (cherries, plums, apples, pears, raspberries, blackberries, elderberries & blueberries) though, so you'll have to make a choice. Be glad to roll out the pastry for you soon as my fracture has defractured. Kendall seems to find the apple to be acceptable.

I kinda like cherry, blackberry, raspberry, razzleberry, and blueberry pie more than apple, but a REALLY GOOD apple pie...well, I sure as heck wouldn't turn it down. I've also had a dynamite rhubarb pie, but that's a special knack and fortunately the lady who made it gave me the recipe (a hint: you need rhubarb).

If you gently snip a circle and give it a half twist you get a Mobius strip (the topological one, not the one in the seedy bar over near Pitt where the cops keep busting all those underage frat boys).

Well, we could go round robin on the subject of whether circles are dead or dying or are in perfectly good health (and some Mudcat threads on song circles and the like have gone round & round and gotten rather heated in the discussion of that topic).

But where there's life, there's heat (which is another cliche, of sorts).

And so I don't mind there being an open question about the state of the onion. I mean the state of the union. I mean the state of the circle and the state of other things that may need resusciation.

After all, talk is cheap, but action is expensive. (or something like that).

So carry on-if you wanna. I gotta ease on down the road.

I surround you with good vibes,

Azizi

I don't think we ever did say "Jolly good show!" very much, unless we were of the Terry Thomas type, and they aren't around much any more.

Is that what it means to be a dead circle, you don't get around much any more?

I was wondering how you can tell a circle has passed on. It has no toes, so you can't look for them to be pointing upwards, does it fall over maybe, if so is a Q just a circle that is on life support, or is that Ø?

I'm just glad it wasn't a command for bold font. As you can see, I'm not good at following commands.

And besides, it's kinda early to be bold. But then again, that depends on who you're with.

That in that first post of mine this morning was supposed to be part of an italic font command for the word some. But I'm sure that folks here won't let minor mistakes stand in the way of our attempts to resusciate the dead circle.

Circles are important, and even if they weren't, it would be our obligation to attempt to save them.

And btw, way back in my first post to this thread, I wrote that if I saw a circle laying on the street or on the sidewalk, I'd be concerned because I don't know "CPA". Well, I hope y'll know that I meant "CPR".

But it's also true that I don't know any CPAs.

Seamus, (as President Obama phrases it) I love you back.

(I love saying "President Obama" and I love the saying "I love you back").

Seriously though, Seamus (whose name I have trouble saying 'cause it's not pronounced the same way it's spelled), I loved seeing your show in Pittsburgh a few years ago. You were great and the show was a lot of fun. Lemme know when you plan to "show" up in this neck of the woods (mountains) again.

VirginiaTam, if I had a hat on this early in the morning, my hat would be off to you. Your post was masterful-or is that mistressful? No disrespect intended. As Tony the Tiger says "You've a GREEAAT way with words!

Rapaire, pie is circular in shape. What kinda pie do you have in mind? Since I'm an all American girl, my preference is apple pie (served warm with vanilla ice cream). But I also like lemon pie-hold the merangue. But holding it with your hands is kinda gooey.

Greetings!

It's fitting that all-um-that <1>some are gathered here this morning to pay homage to the circle-which actually needs no eulogy.

But if it did, we will (at least I hope we will) prove that "it takes a village to resusciate a dead circle".

Remember I'm on a roll

The circle must be alive and well or else you wouldn't be able to roll. A spherical shape is a requisite of rolling. Well actually squarish cubes roll. Think crapshoot!

And while we are on the subject of crapshoot, and reportedly, life is just one big one, isn't it marvelous that since Mudcat reflects life, it must also be one big crapshoot? Some people sure do shoot off a lot of crap in here, myself included.

Back to squarish cubes, could we make a game of rolling former beatniks to see if we can make them cool sphericloids again? They often didn't punctuate academically in their everyday speech, but did very effectively in their poetry.

Now onto the subject of expiration of punctuation sometimes known as the death of Grammar (may she always be well and appropriately remembered). Properly appointed punctuation is always appropriate in schalarly and academic vein. However, it is often neglected in the cybersubculture of blogs and forums such as this. Why! Are we lazy? Well yes, but we have also been indoctrinated into the practice of dispensing with punctuation in the limited bandwidth/limited character space of texts and tweets. So forum really does dictate format.

How did I get into this? Think I will make some typographical symbols roll off the page

So I wake up and I come to Mudcat to find out what's what, and I read the title of this thread "Resuscitate the Dead Circle".

I swear that my first thought was "Have some people stopped using circles?" How would they draw the moon when it's not half or quarter or whatever other name the moon's shapes are given?

My second thought-actually my third thought but who's counting-was "Maybe whoever started that thread is talking about a certain kind of circle-like maybe that's what a Wicca group is called (no disrespect intended for Wiccans). Maybe that group was dying out-having a batch of bad spells...I hope you excuse me. Like the guy in one of my favorite movies "Animal House", I'm on a roll (whole wheat), only it's like a sled and I don't really know what hill I'm riding down. Maybe I'll end up crash landing but I gotta keep going. I can't stop myself until I stop, if you know what I mean. It's a stream of conscious thing and I'm not gonna let my conscious bother me right now.

Anyway, I then thought "I hope somebody knows how to Resuscitate the Dead Circle 'cause I don't know what kind of CPA it would take.

But then I looked at the thread title again and realized that it was "Resuscitate The Dead Cliche".

Oh! Cliches! All the time I'm feeling ignorant and out of the information loop (I never call myself "dumb") cause I didn't know that Wiccan groups were called "Circles", and then all the time I was feeling quilty cause I knew if I saw a circle laying on the street or on a sidewalk that needed to be resucitated I would hesitate for fear of getting germs or worse from it... All that time the word was really "cliches".

"Puff Puzz Fizz Fizz. Oh what a relief it is".

Which is only a cliche in my own mind. Which is why I didn't add it to that other thread.

Now I know that some folks don't like threads that have play on words titles. But I think there is an exception to every rule (Hey! That's a cliche if I every saw one -or "said one"/"wrote one" as the case may be).

So I said to myself "Self, maybe people can have fun with a thread about bringing a circle back to life. Or maybe they prefer bring a square back. Or a triangle or question mark." (Don't ask how I got to punctation marks from geometric figures. Beats me. That's how my mind works sometimes. Remember I'm on a roll).

Or maybe we could all join hands (Kumbaya-like) and try to bring back the period. Full stop (I learned that on Mudcat. I'm so proud of myself for using it).

Periods really are in danger of needing resuscitation, especially when you're a female of a certain age. Where I live when some women have their periods, they say their "friend" has come. Well, my friend hasn't come for a long while and I'm glad about that.

Full stop and all that jazz.

So anybody wanna resuscitate a circle? Or maybe you can get your kicks tryin to resuscitate a square who turned into a beatnik and then turned back into a square. How bout resusciating an octagon? I like the sound of that shape.

And there's always the period. But maybe yours don't need resusciatation. Somehow I don't think any women would want to resusciate that kind of period-or men either for that matter.

Anyway, you're invited to join in these musings if you've a mind to.

And if not, it's all cool and the gang -which is another cliche I use which is based on the name of the Pop group so maybe this could be a music thread.

??

Naw.

I haven't played down in the BS section for a while. If anyone else wants to play (nicely) with me in this thread, jump in the water's fine, though you'll have to play without me for awhile at least 'cause I'm goin back to bed.

See ya later, alligator.

Full stop.
