Valmai - Happy Anniversary to you and Meic. 34 years eh... I've given up counting!

I'd also hoped to get along to the Oak this afternoon, but the band is having a recording session prior to the evening sesh at the Bull in Ditchling. See you anon.

Thanks, Vic - it was good to have you and Tina with us last night. We're very lucky to have so much music in Sussex, and the excellence of the Royal Oak club, sustained over many decades, has a lot to do with the number and quality of other events in the area.

Good luck with the reinstated tune and song session in the bar at the Royal Oak this afternoon. I look forward to coming to it in future months, but (as explained)it's my 34th. wedding anniversary and I'm required to consume ceremonial curries and so forth.

Tootle pip,

Valmai

Speaking as the organiser of the other folk club in Lewes, it was great to see the room at the Elephant so full last night, especially as our own club had also enjoyed a packed room a couple of days earlier for the visit of Leon Rosselson.

Musically, the high spots of the evening for me came from Claire Mann, particularly her playing of strathspeys on the fiddle and reels on the flute.

Also - what a joy to have a sparky floor spot from the visiting Americans Judy and Dennis Cook.

And doesn't the newly enlarged, refurbished and redecorated clubroom look great?

Well done, that folk club!

And it was, as predicted, a blisteringly good evening from three excellent musicians playing gloriously together as a team. Badger your local organisers into booking them, or do it yourself, but don't miss Tom, Claire and David if they are appearing near you.

There were very nice floor spots from everybody, and we fitted more people in the new room than we could have managed at the Lewes Arms.

We're half-way throught the fiddle workshop and Tom's on cracking form - he's just done a very amusing impersonation of Martin Hayes's style, with apologies for the lack of a wig. His fiddle sounds exquisite in our new room.

It's going to be a very good evening. Come early!

Yes, it's going to be good.

We could still squeeze a few more in for the workshop - I can send music by email - and also for the evening. But come early, especially if you'd like a floor spot.

Tootle pip,

Valmai

David Newey AND Claire Mann! And I can't get there!! But those who can will have SUCH a night. Tom and David were on brilliant form recently at Faversham FC.

Congrats to Valmai.

Yes, that's what I was trying to do. Thanks for putting in a link that works, Bryan.

I can send three of the tunes as .pdfs to anyone who's seriously thinking of attending.

Sorry Sue, but the workshop music isn't online, it will be sent out to participants in advance (and probably already has been). I think Valmai was trying to link to
Tom McConville's own website.

Dear Everyone,

The music is now available for Tom McConville's all-day fiddle workshop at the Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ UK, on Saturday 28th. March. Full details and a booking form follow my signature.

In the evening Tom performs at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club . Advance tickets can be booked using the same form.

We've just had the excellent news that Tom will be joined not only by the fine young guitarist David Newey (of Emily Portman's band Rubus that evening, but also by the splendid young flute, whistle and fiddle player Claire Mann. Claire and Aaron Jones played with Tom on his last visit here and gave us a terrific evening as well as two good workshops of their own.

Tootle pip,

Valmai

Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ      www.elephantandcastlelewes.co.uk

Tom's 'Northern swing fiddle' combines Scots/Donegal styles, with Newcastle hornpipes a speciality. He has a lovely flowing style, beautiful tone & faultless technique, & is a also a fine singer with a powerful yet mellow voice. He has played with Bob Fox, Kieran Halpin, his own band Dabhand, Alistair Anderson's Syncopace, Barbara Dixon, Phil Cunningham, Richard Thompson, Chris Newman & Pauline Cato & recently to great acclaim with his own Tom McConville Band featuring Claire Mann & Aaron Jones. He's an inspiration for the new generation of musicians including Seth Lakeman & Kate Rusby & will perform tonight with young guitar virtuoso David Newey (not to be missed).

In addition to all this he has won the BBC Folk Musician of The Year award this year & is in great demand as a teacher to both younger & older players. He loves the fiddle with a great passion & sharing his music with others is his life's work.

The workshop will feature Irish, Scots & Newcastle dance music . How to bring the tunes to 'life' and getting the 'lift' and swing into the music is the aim of the weekend. Bowing and ornamentation of the tunes will be included. Some of Tom's new tunes will feature (Tommy's Tunes). Laughing and total enjoyment is a must!! Music will be sent out in advance.
