I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these young musicians at Bude, but why oh why do they have to play such lovely tunes much, much too fast ?? Because they CAN,I guess, but it ruins it for many of us---they'll end up like Silly Wizard !! |

Amazing that you managed to arrange good weather too, don't forget to order it for next year. Will it be the Bank Holiday weekend? Please let us all know as soon as it's decided, we need to get it set in our diaries!! Thanks to everyone who came to the MudGather on the Sunday morning, I think it worked really well and the Rugby Club is such a good venue. I managed to cut down on my chocolate intake, bit early for it really, but that was a good thing considering that I demolished a box of fingers on Saturday morning in an attempt to get rid of a hangover *grin* So, here's the Register: my guru always said Cats crowdercref bubblyrat Wild Flying Dove Hamish Breton Cap Geordie-Peorgie & TLS Tabster Crane Driver & SussexCarole (well done for getting back over the bridge!) Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: Crane Driver Date: 01 Jun 09 - 02:59 PM Yes, we had to be relayed home too, on Monday. Set off knowing the power assist for the steering was on the blink, but on the M5 something took out the alternator belt as well. We managed to get over the bridge, but finally ran out of power at Magor. The nice men from Green Flag took us home. Apart from that, what a bloody marvelous festival! A*d**w M*K*y (not THAT one!) |

Mind you,on the way homewards ourselves ( A 30,M5,M4) we saw LOADS of people on the hard shoulder ,with their bonnets up & waiting for the AA / RAC whatever----hadn't checked their coolant level, do you think ??( it WAS very hot, mind you !).We are usually OK,as I check everything on Karen's car, even if we're only going to ASDA !!( paranoid, you see). |

Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: bubblyrat Date: 01 Jun 09 - 03:49 AM Lucy, that sounds like a fantastic idea ! I don't know about ketches ( or yawls either) ,but I did notice a couple of "Gigs" outside a house on the "Atlantic Highway" as we were leaving Bude yesterday ; you could get a fair few shanty-singers in those ! Thanks for a simply wonderful festival,it just keeps getting better-the whole atmosphere on the campsite was truly amazing, and of course, the weather helped ...(how did you DO that ??) !! The "turnout" for Herbaceous Border was MUCH better this year, with far more musicians, AND enough adult dancers to make a fair go of the Upton Stick Dance,so a big thankyou to Sue for that ! I wonder if people realise just how heavy all that "clobber",viz. sticks,tatter-jackets etc, that Sue drags around with her, really is ? I certainly do now, after helping to lug it all back to the campsite ! And a big "chuck up" for the world's nicest, happiest, most welcoming and helpful club Steward, too ! |
Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: Hawker Date: 01 Jun 09 - 03:25 AM As it says in the programme, lots of people you may not have heard of before, but you WILL again! Remember you saw them at Bude first! Well all you wonderful people, thank you so VERY much ALL of you for making the festival happen. All I can do is prepare the ground, you make the festival what it is! Without you it really would be rubbish, so thank you thank you thanks you! James Findlay, Alex Cummings, Hannah Cummings, Jon Dyer (the younger) and Penny Dyer - AKA Coracle / The Dyer:Cummings / The James Findlay Band won the Rob Bader Memorial Trophy for the most memorable moment at the festival. The actual moment, started on Friday and lasted right through to Sunday Lunchtime, Such selfless talent, enthusiasm, and energy - makes you feel errr...... somewhat weepy :0) I didnt see it but the youngsters rowing up the canal singing shanties attracted a crowd :0) perhaps we could have a big shanty sing on the canal next year...............things are already being mulled over.............. Does anyone have a ketch small enough to get through Bude sea lock? Anyway, Thanks all, you were fantastic Lucy |
Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: Hamish Date: 31 May 09 - 03:35 PM Yes, George, James Findlay ("the fair-haired lad")was probably the outstanding "find" of the weekend. He was similarly jaw-droppingly good on the Saturday night, too. He was a New Roots winner in 2008. Watch out for him: he's a-coming atcha! |
Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: George Papavgeris Date: 31 May 09 - 02:57 PM Letm add my thanks and congratulations to thos above. Another cracker, Kevin and Lucy! Personal high spot for me was on Friday night, the fair-haired lad who did a two-song spot at the ceilidh in the Falcon; brilliant voice and great fiddle playing. And I loved CMR's singing and their workshop in St Michaels. And Hils, I am glad I made the Mudgather this time! |

Had to restrain myself though..... Lucy: Don't you dare be stressed, now is the time for you to sit back and let things happen as they will. Positive thoughts, love & hugs! Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: Sue the Borderer Date: 26 May 09 - 03:53 PM Look out for details of when you can come and dance or play with Herbaceous Border. It's unlikely to be when/where it says in the programme cos it just wont work for HB's "on the street workshop" to do turn and turn about with Grimspound Morris. I hope all the usual suspects will come along to dance - together with lots more (whether beginners or experts) And, as usual I'm begging for musicians! I had hoped to get someone to come along specially to play 'lead melodeon' for the weekend, but haven't managed it. Instead it will be the usual wonderful mixture. I should be there by Friday lunchtime so if you want to play or dance please come and have a chat with me so I can fix the time and place. I'll then put posters up in the Rugby Club and possibly elsewhere. Sue |
Subject: RE: Bude Folk Festival May 2009 From: Cats Date: 26 May 09 - 02:09 PM I just had to pop into the chocolate shop on my way back from Coombe Martin today to pick up supplies for the weekend. Plain chocolate fingers... yummy |

Looks like we'll be coming down on the Friday, hopefully there by teatime. We've got a pet-sitter calling in on Rusty who'll be home alone. We're finding it very hard to trust her not to get into trouble as she's getting a lot of exercise chasing the foxes. The cubs are due to come out soon so the Vixen is going to lose patience at that point I think. Fingers crossed! Lucy, any chance you could do some juggling with the program or I'll miss having a sing? And will there be ice-cream as a raffle prize this year? |

Not sure if we'll get there on the Thursday or the Friday due to problems regarding Rusty the fearless (and stoopid) kitten who has taken up the old sport of fox-chasing, so I might miss some of the singing I'm down for, but I'll definitely make up for it when we get there *grin* Mudgather after breakfast on Sunday then?
