I heard him in '62, Little Hawk, when he first sang in a London folk club. He received polite applause and the concensus was that he did a poor imitation of Woody Guthrie.

Here's a good one: "Dylan's management office had no immediate comment." Why on earth would they have any comment, immediate or otherwise?

Well, it appears that young Bobby was practicing the folk process when he penned that poem at camp. It has come to light that the "poem" was actually a song written by Hank Snow with a few changes.

'Little Buddy'

I read in a French magazine that he was said to be having to deal with arthritis. Can't say how true this is though.
We saw him last month, and he played guitar just once.
That doesn't prove anything one way or the other though.
It was a great concert IMHO.

Cheers
David

Entirely possible. ;-) That occurred to me also. But there's no accounting for tastes, is there?

Why do I have this intuition that Jack DID hear him in '62 or '65 - and didn't like him then?

You should have heard him in '62 or '65, Jack. He sounded marvelous.

Wesley - Bob is playing very little guitar anymore in his live shows. He normally brings the guitar out for only one song these days and spends the rest of the concert playing keyboard and harmonica. Why that is, I don't know. Perhaps he has some arthritis bothering him or something...or maybe he just feels like playing keyboards lately.

I was walking past Jenners department store in the centre of Edinburgh a few days and heard some godawful whiny singing coming from somewhere. I thought it must have been some very down-at-heel busker with every drug, alcohol and personal hygiene problem known to urban existence, and was amazed that Jenners hadn't got him moved on, as they still have pretensions to classiness.

There was no busker. It was coming from Jenners display window. They have a roomful of Dylan's paintings for sale at the moment and they were beaming Dylan songs over the street to advertise it. (I didn't recognize the song at all, but if it had been a busker I think he'd have been in for a long wait for his first 20p).

An "early example of his brilliance"? I don't think so. An early example of his writing, yes.

NY auction house offers poem by a young Bob Dylan

AP - Tuesday, May 19, 2009 2:29:23 PM
By ULA ILNYTZKY

AP Long before he became famous for such tunes as "Blowin' in the Wind," Bob Dylan's social consciousness and artistry were evident in a poem he penned about a little dog who met a tragic end.

Dylan was just 16 -- and still going by his given name Bob Zimmerman -- when he wrote "Little Buddy" in the summer of 1957 for the newspaper at Herzl Camp in Webster, Wis.

Now the poem is being offered for sale at a Christie's auction, where it is expected to sell for $10,000 to $15,000 on June 23.

Fellow camper and editor of the Herzl Herald, Lisa Heilicher, has decided to sell the poem to help support the camp's $8 million capital campaign.

"I kept it with all of my stuff that I collected from camp," Heilicher said in a telephone interview from her home in Minneapolis. "When I realized how famous he had become, I put it in a piece of plastic and stuck it in an encyclopedia" -- under the letter 'Z' for Zimmerman.

Written on both sides of a single page, the poem tells the poignant story of Little Buddy, who is killed at the hands of a drunkard, and the boy who mourns him.

"He was such a lovely doggy/ And to me he was such fun/ But today as we played by the way/ A drunken man got mad at him/ Because he barked in joy/ He beat him and he's dying here today," the poem reads.

"It's a very early example of his brilliance," Simeon Lipman, Christie's pop culture specialist, said. "It comes from the mind of a teenager (with) some very interesting thoughts kind of percolating in his brain."

Besides the summer they spent at the 120-acre camp, Heilicher and Dylan both attended the University of Minnesota as freshmen. But after that, they lost touch. So when Heilicher decided to sell the poem, Herzl Camp asked Dylan's nieces and nephews who work for the camp to tell him about her decision.

Dylan, who turns 68 on Sunday, told camp officials, "Do what you want with it," said Holly Guncheon, Herzl's development director.

Several other pieces of Dylan writing are being offered at the pop culture sale, including his working lyrics for "With God on Our Side," an early song estimated to bring $20,000 to 25,000.

Dylan's 1958 yearbook from Hibbing (Minn.) high school is expected to bring $6,000 to $8,000, and contains a typical high school inscription to a classmate. It says in part: "Dear Brenda, Well, I didn't see you too much this year but you know what went on in study hall was just kidding ..."

Lipman said there is very little Bob Dylan ephemera available from the years before the singer-song writer came to New York in the 1960s. In 2005, a collection of poems written by Dylan as a college student sold for $78,000 at Christie's.

Of that summer in 1957, Heilicher recalled Dylan "banging on the piano instead of going to the (camp) sessions." He pays tribute to those days on his 2008 CD, "Tell Tale Signs," which features a photograph of the 16-year-old Dylan holding a guitar surrounded by other campers.

"He was different," she said. "He was way before his time."

Ha - Poppagator... ...not quite relevant, but...

When I moved into my current home 20 years ago, I was a young guy with small kids, and there was an old retired guy living across the street. Now we're about the same age; actually he might be a little younger...

I remember when Dylan and the Dead were young, and Ralph Stanley was a Very Old Guy.

Now they (we?) are all in the same general age group. Ain't it funny how time slips away?

(Had to slip in a reference to Willie...)

Dylan featured in 2nd Rothbury festival's lineup
AP - Monday, March 16, 2009 12:37:05 PM

APBob Dylan, Willie Nelson and surviving members of the Grateful Dead are scheduled to perform at the Rothbury music festival in Michigan.

Organizers of the second annual festival, set for July 2-5 at the Double JJ Ranch and Resort in Rothbury, say the Black Crowes, Damian Marley, Nas, Ralph Stanley and Ani DeFranco will also perform. Sixty-six acts are listed on the festival's Web site.

The first festival, which featured more than 70 acts, drew some 40,000 people. Performers included John Mayer, the Dave Matthews Band and Snoop Dogg.

The Double JJ filed for Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy protection within two weeks of the end of last year's festival in Oceana County's Rothbury because of millions in debts unrelated to the event.
