My husband and I will be arriving on the California Zephyr on April 29. We are both morris musicians, and are wondering what's on in San Francisco and environs to welcome in the May? We need to be at the CA Maritime Academy for their graduation ceremony May 2, and after that we'll be with family, but until then we're free (so far) and looking for good friends and good music.
We haven't figured out yet exactly how, but we plan to bring accordion, concertina and fiddle along with our camping gear for the return trip and whatever clothes we may need in SF at that time of year.

Allison

i look to the Revels for any old-time (medieval type) activities..
and i see they are celebrating may day at the oakland zoo...in the east bay, across from s.f. on May 2.

http://www.oaklandzoo.org/component/option,com_jcalpro/Itemid,2714/extid,200/extmode,view/

that would be the pagan way...to celebrate may day..

there may also be a celebration featuring international worker's day.
I am not sure what ILWU is but it seems they plan to protest the Iraq war on that day.

Hi Allison
Dave Swan is a very good source & a very good & nice man to boot, he will steer you right. I don't see chanteyranger snooping around much these days but he's also a good source as well as "THE" person to see if you have any interest in his domain 'Hyde St Pier" & those tall ships down there. You might want to PM him too.
You'll also want to check out the the Sna Francisco Folk Music Club. Make sure you see the calendar section for May 1st. The local Morris will be singing up the sun.
San Francisco is one of the few places in the US that has the variety, guality & quanity of many forms of folk music that rivals Boston. You should get more good dancing & singing in than you be able to stand.
You might want to PM Joe Offer too, if he doesn't chime in here.
Have a great time

Barry

My band and Apple Tree Morris will be part of a celebration on Sunday, May 3 at the Blue Heron Inn in Duncans Mills, about 60 miles north of SF. Worth the trip, it's in the lovely Russian River Valley.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for the ideas! We'll be with family from May 2 on. But we'll try to take part in the May Day festivities somewhere, and we'll try to let folks know where and when! Any jamming/singing that night or the 29th/30th?

Allison

Nice to hear you're coming to California, Allison.
Well, our really good sings in Sacramento are on the second Sunday, April 12 and May 11. We also have a "Rise Up Singing" session on the second Friday. But hey, if there's a gathering in the Bay Area and Animaterra's there, I'm likely to show up.
Gee, there's an In Harmony's Way sing in Berkeley on the first Wednesday of the month - seems like everything is at the beginning of the month, nothing much at the end.
Hope to see you soon - somewhere.
-Joe-

Hello from California!

Apple Tree Morris dance up the sun in Sebastopol, about 40 miles north of San Francisco. Great folks (my team, so of course I'd say that). They'll probably be doing a couple of school events later in the day. There's usually a cider pub to visit later on. You can find them at: http://www.nbcds.org/old_site/morris/default.htm

If you want to stay closer in, Berkeley Morris dance at dawn in the hills just east of Berkeley. See their page here: http://www.berkeley-morris.org/

Want to go into full information overload? Ric Goldman, local repository of information on all things morris, has very kindly put up a page with links to ALL the West Coast teams' May morning information: http://rgoldman.org/morris/mayday.htm

Let us know which location you choose!

Cheers,
Claire

Note to self: Once again, evidence that I should read ALL the posts before thinking I am coming up with new information...sorry! But I hope to see you while you're here, anyway.

Joe, let's see if we can come up with a gathering in the Bay Area- I'd love to see you again!
ClaireBear, we don't know whether we can make it 40 miles north, since we don't know where we'll be staying or whether we'll have a car. But I'd love to see your team!
Looks like we have too many choices- but also that we'll be welcoming in the May the West Coast Way somehow, somewhere.

Allison

Allison, although I play for a team that's 40 miles north of San Francisco, I actually live about 50 miles south of SF, in Santa Cruz. I have to drive through SF to get there, so I could give you a ride to Sebastopol, should you wish to go that far (I must warn you that I drive a Mini, so someone could be a bit squished). The house where I stay should have accommodations; of course I'd have to check with them first to be sure.

Or you may prefer staying in the City and Maying with Goat Hill, or going to Berkeley. All lovely people.

At any rate, I'd certainly try to get to a Bay Area gathering, if there is one. I'd love to meet you.

C

"Now is the month of Maying, when merry lads are playing..."

Thanks, ClaireBear- I'll talk it over with the DH and we'll try to get closer to actually making plans soon!

Allison

I have put the festival on the following thread on the table/chart that says USA Festivals 2009.

thread.cfm?threadid=22593&messages=130&page=1&desc=yes

Can you check it for me please just to make sure it is correct.

If you have any further concerts/festivals/sessions/singarounds, can you provide me with the relevant data. If you could type the data as a line by line item based on the field headings, that would really help.

Thanks
Les
