I am singing at my sister's wedding in June and am looking for an appropriate Folk Song to sing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

So the next question is, by "folk song" do you mean something traditional/anonymous or something singer-songwriter-y? And if the former, any particular tradition -- e.g., English, Irish, Scottish, Canadian, American...? We have all sorts here.

Well, I'm not sure. I usually prefer the traditional songs (danny boy, the water is wide, etc...) but the specific tradition is not as important to me. Folk songs usually sit well with my voice and sound very pretty, so that's why i'm leaning towards a folk song

My bro-in-law sang this at our ceremony for us

I suggested that we ask someone to sing Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through The Night", but for some reason my wife didn't agree with that...

Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T GET MARRIED, GIRLS (Leon Rosselson)
From: bill\sables

DON'T GET MARRIED, GIRLS by Leon Rosselson

Don't get married girls you'll sign away your life
You may start off as a woman but you'll end up as the wife
You could be a vestal virgin take the veil or be a nun
But don't get married girls for marriage isn't fun
Oh it's great when you're romancing and he plays the lovers part
You're the flowers in his garden you're the flame that warms his heart
And his love will last forever and he'll promise you the moon
But just wait until you're married and he'll sing a different tune
You're his tapioca pudding, You're the dumplings in his stew
But he'll soon begin to wonder what he ever saw in you
Still he takes without complaining all the dishes you provide
But you know he likes to have a little jam tart on the side

So don't get married girls it's very badly paid
You may start off as the mistress but you'll end up as the maid
Be a daring deep sea diver be a polished polyglot
But don't get married girls for marriage isn't hot
Have you seen him in the morning with a face that looks like death
With dandruff on his pillow and tobacco on his breath
Still he needs some reassurance with his cup of tea in bed
'Cos he's worried 'bout the mortgage and the bald patch on his head
And he thinks that you're his mother lays his head upon your breast
So you try to boost his ego iron his shirt and warm his vest
Then you get him off to work the mighty hunter is restored
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford

So don't get married girls men are all the same
They'll just use you when they want you you'd be better on the game
Be a call girl, be a stripper, be a hostess, be a whore
But don't get married girls for marriage is a bore
When he comes home in the evening he can hardly spare a look
All he says is what's for dinner after all you're just the cook
Then he takes you to a party and he eyes you with a frown
And you know you've got to look your best you mustn't let him down
And he'll fix you with that look and there's that twinkle in his eye
Like he's entered in a raffle and he's won you for a prize
But when the party's over you'll go slogging through the sludge
Half the time a decoration and the other half a drudge

So don't get married it'll drive you round the bend
It's a lane without a turning it's the end without an end
Take a lover every Friday, Take up tennis, be a nurse
But don't get married girls for marriage is a curse

For you get him off to work the mighty hunter is restored
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford.

We had "Wild Mountain Thyme" with the last verse amended as learned from Jack Langstaff:

If my true love will not go,
I will surely find no other
To pull wild mountain thyme... etc.

ASK - Your Sister - Duh?

ASK - Your future Brother in Law - Duh?

ASK - Your mother (you share the same mother?) Duh?

ASK - The bridal co-ordinator (if it is not DIY) Duh?

ASK - WHAT !!

Date

Location

Theme

Colors

Background of people

Brides-maids

It is NOT about you be graced that they have invited you to participate....and discover the connection with communication. Soliciting the "kindness of strangers" is weird.

Sincerely,

Ditto what Guesting Gargoyle sand AND If you are planning on singing during the ceremony, some denominations may have a restriction on what you sing, insisting that it be appropriate to their liturgy. Catholics tend to be quite restrictive, Unitarians couldn't care less.

If at the reception, almost anything goes that folks feel appropriate plus LOTS that isn't. There are whole fake books available with music for weddings. More details on what place in the proceedings you are to perform might elicit more specific suggestions. Just make sure whatever it is, it's something you're comfortable singing, you know it cold, and could sing it in your sleep, because THIS is the sort of situation where folks take pictures, videos, and remember for years if there's any blunder.

Joanne in Cleveland (whose first public performance was at a wedding)

At my neice's wedding, Keith and I sang the song both the Copper's Wedding song and the one that he and Lynne Heraud recorded - A Passionate Shepherd to his love, or otherwise known as "Come live with me and be my love" (from their "Stars in my crown" CD - words by Christopher Marlowe and tune by Lynne).

Cheers

Hi Sara,

The day, as was already indicated, is about the new couple. But the way they share it with all of you, and how you share it with them, is about how you all care for eachother. If they asked you to sing, they want you to express that feeling in your way.

The liturgy might indeed limit your choice. Apart from that, remember that your song should blend in: If it's part of the wedding ceremony, then ideally the ceremony should naturally continue from the song, without people feeling that they need to applaud. This may influence both your choice of song and the way you perform it. It may even influence the position from where you sing it, so the people's attention will stay with your sister and her chosen one.

I understand you're asking for suggestions of songs, to see what matches what you want to express. And that is all we can do: Suggest titles to make you aware of a wider choice. You know the new pair and your heart best, and in the end, it should be you adding to the day.

Personally, I would suggest "Their hearts were full of spring", but that is not really a folk song of course, and thus it may not be what you're looking for.

I hope that after the day, we'll hear what you went with, and how the day was celebrated.
Best wishes
                                                                                                                                                      Mysha

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU'RE BREAKIN' MY HEART (Harry Nilsson)
From: Peace
Date: 12 Apr 09 - 12:17 AM

This would be perfect, but it's rock.

YOU'RE BREAKIN' MY HEART
Harry Nilsson

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart so fuck you

All I want to do is have a good time now I'm blue
You won't boogaloo,
Run down to Tramps, have a dance or two, ooohhh
You're breakin' my heart,
You're tearing it apart but fuck you

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart, boo-hoo

You stepped on my ass
You're breakin' my glasses too
You won't drive my car, might be a star
I've had enough of you
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame so fuck you

Instrumental break #1

You can't have your way
There's nothing left to say
There's nothing left to do, ooooohhh
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart so fuck you

Instrumental break #2

You gotta have your way
There's nothing left to say
There's nothing left to do, ooooowww
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart but I love you

Notice the end line that brings closure to a touching song. However, I'd run it by the bride and groom first.

From: oldhippie

And there's always "Come Sing A Song With Me":
You can add your personalized verses.

Come sing a song with me
Come sing a song with me
Come sing a song with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:
       And I'll bring you hope
When hope is hard to find
And I'll bring you a song of love
And a rose in the winter time.

Come walk in rain with me
Come walk in rain with me
Come walk in rain with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come dream a dream with me
Come dream a dream with me
Come dream a dream with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Come share a rose with me
Come share a rose with me
Come share a rose with me
That I might know your mind.

Chorus:

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET FORGET ME NOT (GRACEFUL & CHARMING)
From: GUEST
Date: 13 Apr 09 - 06:16 AM

SWEET FORGET-ME-NOT (GRACEFUL & CHARMING)

1. Fancy brings a thought to me of a flower so bright and fair.
Grace and beauty, both combine to make that far more rare,
Like a maiden that I know who shared my happy lot,
Where we parted, when she whispered, "You'll forget me not".

CHORUS: She's graceful and she's charming like the lilies in the pond.
Time is flowing swiftly by. Of her I am so fond.
The roses and the daisies they bloom around the spot
Where we parted, when she whispered, "You'll forget me not".

2. We met I really don't know where. I guess it's all the same.
Love grows in a village green as well as in a lane.
I gently took her by the hand and a glance at me she shot.
She dropped a flower. I picked it up. It was a sweet forget-me-not. CHORUS

3. And then there came a happy time when something that I said
Caused her lips to murmur "Yes". Shortly we were wed.
Now there's a cottage by a lane and a tiny garden spot.
There grows a flower, I know it well. It's the sweet forget-me-not. CHORUS

From: Bernard

Mary Chapin Carpenter's 'NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK'?

(Mary Chapin Carpenter/Don Schlitz)

To hear you say my name, to see you search my eyes
To feel you touch my hand, it more than satisfies.
If I was not the first, just say I'll be the last
It's too much to expect, but it's not too much to ask.

Now I can only dream of being all you need
And I can only try to be the reason why
You think about today and forget about the past
It's too much to expect, but it's not too much to ask.

Now I can only dream of being all you need
And I can only try to be the reason why
You think about today 'cause the past is just the past
It's too much to expect, but it doesn't hurt to ask
It's too much to expect, but it's not too much to ask.

Ah, l'amour...Lovely request.

2 of my songs are wedding songs, suitable for both wedding or reception (first waltz):
1. "Moments Like This" from my No Place Like Home album 2001, which has been sung from Paris, ON to Paris, France. I have arranged it in sheet music as well. First verse below:
"There are moments like this that come once in a lifetime
When the world's in the palm of your hand
For awhile Time stands still and you capture Life's meaning
And the Future is at your command
For awhile all the stars have aligned in the heavens
And those heavens are here in your eyes
There are moments like this that come once in a lifetime
But they last for the rest of our lives..."

and if your sister is marrying a "Feller from Farchin" (ie marry a man from Newfoundland, like I did), then this would also be appropriate

2. "Newfoundland Wedding Waltz" from "legacy" cd 2004
"There's a place in my heart for Newfoundland
For it gave my Love to me
Oh, the strength of The Rock is in his hands
And his eyes are like the sea
He knows the meaning of work and survival
He shows compassion and understands
And everyday I thank his Mother
For her son from Newfoundland..." (your sister's new mother-in-law will love that)

Please feel free to contact me and very best wishes for a wedding full of love. Thanks so much.

My suggestions would be "Beggars to God" (Bob Franke, U.S.) and "I'll Sail No More" (Bryan Bedford, UK).

I looked for YouTube and Myspace clips for both, but couldn't find either sung well enough that you'd get any idea how lovely both these songs are.

I believe lyrics to both are posted on this forum somewhere -- yes, here is I'll Sail No More, and here is Beggars to God.

On the more serious note, we had "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and Nick Cave's "Into My Arms" when we got married the other year.

And on the less serious note...

If you had been in Norfolk, it would have been your best man's problem to sort it. (Echoes of getting me coat etc.)
