When I used to play in standard tuning I used to play the 5 note A major chord in a way that may have looked like A6, as I am able to use one finger and bend it in such a way as to still play the top E open. I wonder if Pete Seeger does the same?

That's not an "A9", Richard, an A9 is a dominant chord--it would have
A C# E G in it, and would put you not in key of A, but in key of D.

Abdul,
    It's the first chord in "The Mexican Blues" in Seeger's "Folksinger's Guitar Guide."
    I find it a useful chord. A6 makes sense, since it's one note lower than A7, but calling it F#m7 is very sexy. Thanks, all.

Perhaps it's a double drop D tuning and just looks like an A6 :)

This doesn't feature in my 1956 Folksingers guitar guide....an instruction record by Peter Seeger.

Could he perhaps just be playing the usual A with the finger pad pressing down and not the tips. I've done this sometimes, muffling the 6th

In most three chord tricks that would surely grate badly. I don't see why you'd want to do it. In some places A9 (002200) would sound sweeter.

What's the real name of the Pete Seeger 'A' Chord on the guitar? It's a regular A, with the F# (first string, second fret) added. It can be played with one finger, the index finger, pressing down the first four strings at the second fret.
