Subject: Female duet songs - any ideas?
From: Suegorgeous
Date: 23 Mar 09 - 10:05 PM

I'm trying out some close harmony songs with another woman singer (harder than I thought, but great fun!). We're already working on MY JOHNNY WAS A SHOEMAKER, and SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR. Another I'm hoping to try is MY HUSBAND'S GOT NO COURAGE IN HIM.

I want to research more songs, and wondered if anyone also has any other suggestions for 2-person songs (sung with or without harmonies), or indeed any songs that might adapt well?

[Many song titles in this thread have been converted to links by a Mudelf.]

Rossini's "Cats' Duet". (Seriously. I've heard it done in a folk club so it must be folk).

For Scottish stuff, you might try to find recordings of Gordeanna McCulloch and Chris Miles, or Janet Russell and Christine Kydd.

On Saturday night I heard False Hare (female duo) sing a remarkably good ROSEBUD IN JUNE in two-part harmony. A great song, ideal for that kind of treatment.

Hissyfit does some beautiful close harmony songs. Try their website or PM Partridge. "In his dreams he remembers the old days..." [LAMENT] is wrenchingly beautiful.

Thanks to all so far! I'm after mainly traditional songs, though any achingly beautiful contemporary one I'd consider! I'm more drawn towards the slower, less raucous trad songs (I think the only reason I like My husband's got no courage is because there's a very sad sub-text buried deep in there!).

Keep them coming!

Thanks

The most hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck-standing-up female vocal duet song I know is this one:

Landini, Ecco la primavera

The second half of that video is the unaccompanied one, probably the way it was meant to be sung. Syntagma Musicum did the best version of it I've heard.

First off, I'd suggest doing a song that both of you love deeply, and arrange your harmony for it so you're not doing a version of a song another female duo has made well known.

But for ideas on who has done it well & inspiration...
Sally Rogers & Claudia Schmidt Closing the Distance
Anne Hills & Cindy Mangsen Never Grow Old and Never Grow Up , though they do have some guests performing with them. Lost Jimmy Whelan is a lovely spooky one
Silly Sisters (June Tabor & Maddy Prior) - any album, but particularly Grey Funnel Line for acapella harmony
Janet Russell & Christine Kidd
Kossoy Sisters (check out sister harmony in general)
There's not near enough of it, but on some Trapezoid albums- can't think of which because they're tucked away on cassettes - Feyda Epstein and Lorraine Duisit did some piercingly lovely duets

Joanne in Cleveland

I suspect they don't suit your genre and interest, but also check out Hazel and Alice for something a bit different from what has otherwise been recommended.

Two of the best duets, imo, on the album to which I linked are "YOU GAVE ME A SONG", and "WEST VIRGINIA, YOU ARE MY HOME."

Well one song that I have heard live by Hissyfit and they do it beautifully is SAMMY'S BAR written by my icon Cyril Tawney.

Although I don't have a recording of Linda and Hazel singing that, I do have my most favourite of Youtube videos of this song that was used in a film. Do look at it. If it doesn't lend itself to Female Duet, I will eat my hat. Great chorus as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPW9siuSfoU

From "Flipping the Whale" (2000), written and directed by Sean Guinan, produced by Joshua Eckhardt and Sean Guinan. With Eddie Shin (Gilmore Girls, Dr. Miracles), Amy Bakos and Sean Guinan. The song was written by Cyril Tawney and recorded by the Golden Ring, a short-lived Chicago folk group from the early 70s.

The sound for that video came from The New Golden Ring: Five Days Singing, Volume 2, on Folk-Legacy Records. The lead singers are Joe and Lynn Hickerson. Recorded back in the 70s, I believe, but I can't locate my old LPs to verify; reissued in 1996 on CD. All three of the original New Golden Ring albums are treasures.

I don't know about harmony, but if you want a bit of a laugh, SALONIKA was a song from WW1 sang by two competing women, one a soldier's wife, the other the wife of a "slacker". Lyrics and explanations posted here :

Villan - indeedy :) Celtic Women usually leave me cold, though I kind of see why others like them.

I didn't put "folk" in the title of the thread mainly because it wouldn't fit. I also didn't put it in the first post because (a) I thought a lot of the suggestions would be trad folk anyway, and (b) I spose I didn't want to limit it in case someone came up with one I really liked in another genre. I guess that's happened with Sammy's Bar! :)

Thanks all, much appreciated.

Sue

Best of luck with your songs, Suegorgeous.

I know a good duet. On a vinyl LP I once owned, Triona ni Domnhail (sp) sang a delightful song called 'THE WEE LASS ON THE BRAE.' Her aunt joined her in sweet, easy-to-learn harmony.

There's an mp3 which claims to be the tune at this site:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wee-Lass-Brae/dp/B001FMIFDQ

but it doesn't say anything about it being a duet. I hope it is, though.
