Give a wave next time you happen to pass my old dorm building, Simmons Hall...*sniff* *waah!* I'm soooo jealous, and so glad for things have worked out so well for you and that you've made your home in such a beautiful, beautiful place. May you live happily ever after there. I've been kicking around the idea of making the trip to Folk College this year, and now you've given me the added incentive of running into you there! I failed to mention I'm finding exactly as many outdoor activities as I am folk related activities. Lots of gamelands, preserves, museums, caves, sustainability centers, lakes, trout streams, hippie communes, and so on. Plus, my job is to market all of Penn State's environmental activity, so I'm knee deep without even trying. |

Lily has responded very positively to full day kindergarten. She had half day at our last house, and this is a lot better for all of us. Penn State football players can, in fact, read. They show up in her class and read to them. How awesome is that? Bodhi, I think, is glad Lily is in school all day too because now he's getting a lot more attention. Tough job for the little guy to compete with a 6 year old for attention. His vocabulary seems to double every day now. A very cool kid, happy, easily pleased and occupied, polite, and smart as a whip. Alexis is in her 2nd semester of college, just an hour away in Altoona. She was shocked that you actually have to study in college, but she's happy and adjusting. She grew up to be a kind and thoughtful, beautiful woman. I couldn't be prouder. Emily got a job at the university airport, so she's right back where she began too. She's gearing up to going back to school, and we just happen to know of a great one right here in town. She sees the beauty and kindness in this place, so that's about all I could have hoped for. Merle, says my father, is a bad dog. He doesn't listen. He escapes whenever possible. He's not getting along with other dogs lately. He's clever and plays games with you at moments like when you think you don't need pants on to let him in. He'll eat your sandwhich if you take your eyes off it. You know.... a beagle. We're going to cut his balls off and get him a shock collar. I'll keep you updated. Barry I actually play music almost every tuesday night at a jam at a church just outside town. Great folks. It's a circle just like at the Getaway. I'm happy to report that not a day goes by that I don't touch a guitar or mandolin or banjo or ukelele or dobro..... I will try to make the Getaway this year, yes. WYSIWYG I actually saw Simple Gifts on Monday. Linda and her husband Mel are wonderful people and I've had the pleasure of their company on a number of occasions. Rabi-Sol
I sent Jim Colbert a message right after you mentioned him last time, and he introduced me around, which was great. I just hung out with him Saturday night. We both volunteered for an Acoustic Brew show. Art, he's quite a fan of yours you know. All anyone ever says about him is how good a guy he is, so I'm looking forward to spending more time with him. |

When I first moved to Malvern any trip into town I would bump into someone I knew, from day 1 and I knew few people. That continued for 15 years and despite divorce and unemployment it is the reason I regard it as my home town. First impressions count, and having friends early in a residence is part of that. |

But grad students tend to be pretty isolated. Beware of football days - they make all streets in town one way toward the stadium before the game and all one way away from the stadium after the game. I would note the football days to be sure to get all errands done well before the game. Most of the folkies I meet are aware of mudcat and/or the digital tradition. |

This is a way-diverse group of folks who think. People around us know about it even if they haven't visited. It has a good reputation. In fact, Mudcat is a National Treasure Really. I'm glad you've landed someplace that has so much of what you're looking for. If, when you're not singing, drinking beer, or broadcasting, if you decide to go out for a ride in the country you'll find that the area is lovely. Have a good map, some of those roads are quite twisty and not necessarily logical, but taking the family out for a little exploration and a picnic will be a treat in that part of the state. Be sure to hit the off campus, free concert the first night...several of the workshop presenters perform!!!! I second what Susan said, Linda is amazing...of course Karen is wonderful (love love, LOVE her voice) and Rachel (who led a few of the workshops I attended) was a great teacher!!!! We still have a thing or two to get back to fully operational, but we're stable, and that's good. State College, being my new town too, is quite a town. Of course, its home to the great Penn State University, but it also happens to have a pretty amazing folk scene that I somehow missed when I went to school here 15 years ago. Maybe it was the full-time nightshift, full-time school, wife and kids schedule that I kept. More likely the beer. Anyway, I thought I'd take a moment and let you know about some things I've gotten involved in and/or been impressed by since I've been here. First of all, I'm going to be one of several rotating DJ's on the Folk Show on WPSU radio (http://wpsu.org/radio/folk/), the Public Radio station here in the center of the state. I've done much of the training and should be hitting the air in the next few weeks. It streams on the net, so I'll be sure to let you know when it's my turn. So, in a way, mudcat radio is back. The folk show site has a forum. Please behave yourself. Something cool going on this spring is the Folk College (http://folkcollege.com/). From their site: Folk College is a fun and friendly weekend of playing and listening to folk music — a fantastic three days of workshops, jam sessions, concerts, and group playing. The camp is designed for musicians with eclectic tastes. Within one weekend, you'll have a choice of workshops ranging from oldtime to Celtic to blues to international, and you'll get to sing, dance, play, and listen. Professional development will be offered for school teachers, including Act 48 credit for Pennsylvania teachers. Anyone that may think of going can stay at mudcat central with me. I can sleep 4 to 6 folks comfortably. Its only 30 miles from the site, so I'll probably commute. The group that organizes the good folk shows up here is called Acoustic Brew ( http://www.acousticbrew.org. I've really enjoyed the performers that I've seen so far and they really do a great job running the shows. Fantastic group of folks, some of which I came to find have been lurkers for years. It's remarkable to me that anyone has heard of mudcat. It seems like every day I meet someone who knows all about us, and I can't help but be surprised. The first 3 people I met here were all because of mudcat. It's even helped me out of an awkward situation or two. It really reminds me of what we got here and what it means to a lot of people. It totally eased my transition into a new town and a new folk community. So if anyone moves, make sure you post as to where you're going and maybe you'll have a friend by the time you get there. I also started a blog and events calendar of my activities up here but I'm so busy doing the things on the calendar that I've found little time to write about it. It may not last, but for now, it's at http://StateCollegeTrad.BlogSpot.com. The calendar also shows when the Folk Show runs. Anyway, I'm having a ball here and have met a lot of wonderful old folkies. I think I've already done more here in 10 weeks than I did in 10 years in Philadelphia. This may be the best decision I've ever made. And don't worry, I won't spend all my time out there, I'm anxious to get into a rhythm and spend more time here hanging out and working on the growing list of requests you all have. |
