Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: SAILORS ALL (Ewen Carruthers)
From: GUEST,Ewen Carruthers

Hello from California where I have lived since 1998. My name is spelled EWEN

I wrote the song in the Key of D and it is basically a 3 chorder-D G & A.

I have edited the text from Joe Offer to show the correct lyrics and the simplified chords. There are also chord changes between the lyrics and these are shown in brackets. I hope this helps.

Watch how the morning comes, the whole world over;
D          A      D   G               D
Turning the seas to gold         from Rio to Dover.
G    A      G    D                   (A)   G                  D   A

Each harbor with its ships All trimmed and ready,
D       A   D    G          D
Hoping the offshore winds    Will blow them steady.
G    A    G    D                      (A)   G                        D    A
And we are sailors all Until we've landed
A            G    D          G   A                D         (G) (A)

We are both great and small,                      Sailors all.
A          G       D               G       (D and A)      G          D

And those who fear the storms May not go farther;
They will sail round and round, Within their own harbor
Yet those who brave the seas, Believing they've landed,
May put down among the reefs And find they are stranded.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.

So some may reach their land, While others may perish,
Each taking memories Of journeys they cherish

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.
Sailors all, Sailors all, Sailors all, Sailors all.

Ewan Ewen Carruthers comes from Morpeth in Northumbria but spends a lot of his time in the States. He is notoriously dismissive of fan clubs, web sites and music business generally. He tends to market and sell his CDs himself so apart from one commercially available offering they are very hard to get. Mike Silver is a close friend of Ewan Ewen and a very nice guy indeed. I am sure if you emailed him for information he would help. I seem to recall he was once had a stock of Carruthers' CDs for sale but don't quote me on that. Sailors All is indeed definitely by Ewan Ewen spelled with an A as the third letter. I am told it is one thing he is particular about so if you ever get to contact him direct, get it right.

For the correct spelling, see the message posted by Ewen himself here, also the website about him here or the page at Stockfisch Records here

Well, thanks for that Jim. I've had pretty much the same results from Google etc.
My friend seemed to be under the impression that this was a fairly well-known song, but it's a new one on me.
I may just buy the Mike Silver CD, which has got to be a worthwhile purchase anyway.
Incidentally, there is a Ewen Carruthers MySpace site, but again with very little real information on it.
Anyway, thanks again for your interest.

SAILORS ALL is on Mike Silver's album "Roadworks".

Here's Mike Silver's web site but it doesn't give any lyrics or sound samples or any information about the song.

His MySpace page has some other songs, but not this one.

Googling "Ewen Carruthers" and "Sailors All" together doesn't find anything.

It's hard to find information about Ewen Carruthers. I couldn't find a website of his. I did find a description of his album "When Time Turns Around" but SAILORS ALL is not there. I couldn't identify any other albums by him.

Yes, sorry, it is the Ewen Carruthers song I'm looking for. I couldn't give any more details because I'm unfamiliar with the song and was asking on behalf of a friend.

No! The one on Mike's album is by Ewan Ewen Carruthers, I think!

It's also been recorded by Hector Gilchrist & Sue Graves (Soiree) on their debut album

Here's a song with the same title. Is it the one you're seeking?
Going by title alone (or title and artist, even) is a bit risky. Better to supply what you know of the song, when you request it.

SAILORS ALL
(Ewen Carruthers)

Watch how the morning comes, the whole world over;
Turning the sea foam, from Rio to Dover.
Each harbor with its ships All trimmed and ready,
Hoping the offshore winds Will blow them steady.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.

And those who fear the storm May not go farther;
They will sail round and round, Within their own harbors.
If those who brave the seas, Believing they've landed,
They put down among the reeves, And find they are stranded.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.

And some may reach their lands, While others may perish,
Each taking memories Of journeys they cherished.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.

And we are sailors all Until we've landed
We are both great and small, Sailors all.
Sailors all, Sailors all, Sailors all, Sailors all.

transcribed by ear from the Bram Taylor album Fragile Peace

Does anyone have the lyrics and guitar chords for 'Sailors All' as recorded by Mike Silver? It doesn't appear to be in the DT.
