FYI... After a short sabatical to relocate to a new ISP, I have hoisted my traditional Canadian tunebook (midi files) to a new site. I hope to maintain a tune a week pace to expand the collection. Enjoy, eh?

Glad to hear you're back. Your site is one of the best things to have happened to the Internet since I've been surfing, which ain't that long.

You might recall that I sent you an e-mail a while back regarding the "Emigrant's Daughter" and the fact that the band in which I play, the Kingston Ceili Band, have adopted that particular piece as an integral part of our repertoire. At this time, one of the ladies in our group is singing it solo, but we are working on an arrangement which will include all the instruments in the group, fiddles, flute, guitars and bodhran. It should be a spectacular sound.

And while on the subject, on June 13 last, the same young lady sang the Emigrant's daughter at an outdoor Mass to commemorate the 1500 famine victims buried in a mass grave here in Kingston 150 years ago. You could have heard a pin drop, and literally, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Keep up the good work. If we ever get to recording the piece, we'll make you famous.

And to all the mudcatters who have faithfully read the above reference to the Emigrant's Daughter, trust me, it is well worth downloading both words and music from Barry's site.

Thanks for the nice comments, Jack! I am amazed and thrilled to advise that An Emigrant's Daughter has been recorded twice now. Perhaps that signals the birth of a new folk song worthy of inclusion in Ye Olde Mudcat database! ;-)

Both of Dale's links work for me, so the problem may be on your end. I trained Dale myself, so he does links quite well, thankyouverymuch.

Barry,

I echo the sentiments here. Your music site is one of the best I have found on the net. The only other one I love as much as yours is Lesley Nelson's Contemplator site, so imagine how wonderful it was to find your Tunebook included on Lesley's site.

I think that I can safely say that I have not found another site with so many beautiful arrangements of tunes. You are truly gifted to bring out the best in each tune.

Jack,

As you know I lived in Kingston for three years. Yet for some reason I never knew about this grave site. I recently read about it in a book printed 1964. Where in Kingston is it -- presumably somewhere along the lake?

Glad to hear the band is still going. Maybe I'll get to hear you again on one of my rare visits. How long has the band been going now -- I think you were already in operation when I moved there in 1982.

The original grave site was near where the Kingston General Hospital power house is now situated. That was the location of the "fever sheds" during that period of the 1840's. When they built the power house, in about 1969, they moved the remains as well as the beautiful marble "Angel of Mercy" monument to a corner of St. Mary's Cemetery in the north end of town, near where QECVI is now located.

And as far as the band is concerned, I'm told by people who kept better track than me, that we've been going since 1981. We're starting to think of a reunion for our 20th anniversary, if I can find someone to do the work.

I should mention that Toby Rider has put up some Real Audio clips of some older, most deceased I think, Cape Breton fiddlers which he got off of home tapes and I think a couple of deleted LP's. You can find them at the site http://www.tullochgorm.com/ (sorry Joe I forgot how to do the HTML thing) There are also two songs in Gaelic.

Barry, I know at least three completely different songs called Banks of Newfoundland. One of them is a variation of the one for which you posted lyrics.

Margarita, it might also be a problem with the player. You have to have Windows Media Player. I did not, so I downloaded it just to see and hear that clip. Now I use it for a lot of things. (I had a media player, but apparently not "modern" enough.)

It is also possible that they were down at the time you tried to access it. I have had that happen at different sites that I have tried to go to.

If you prefer to use your own player, rather than the one on their page, then paste this url in the file/open box of your media player.
