I want to look like Emmylou when I grow up. :0)

Bruce, that woman is only holding the guitar so she can keep her chest up. If she stood up, she'd fall over! ;0)

Yeah, yeah, I know all you guys would be there to catch her with your arms outstretched, probably killing each other in the rush, too.

Poor kid, no money for clothes, this recession is worse than I thought!

Of course, Seth Lakeman's had to endure the 'Pretty Syndrome' too and er..some on here have been more than happy to join in on that one. Seth's there because his music pounds and thumps its way through the otherwise so often dirgy English folk music.

Of course, you have Naked Mawkins on the cover of fRoots this month, along with a Naked Causley, who appears to have thrown his instrument to the wind...

Whoa! Jim!   Cross Eyed Smiley! :0)

Quick, Nurse...the screens!
Nakey Folky Lads ;0)

Well the Dixie Chicks have plenty of top talent, balls enough to tell the prez to "F%$#k Off", write some great stuff & can pack the house. I just wish they weren't so ugly. Some folks just got to give it up trying to "LOOK GOOD".

Jack Campin may inadvertently have explained the silhouettes of some of the BLOKES round our way. The effect can be so pronounced that the whole body assumes a globular shape.

Why are the stars (of any kind and age) pretty?

Start with natural attractiveness.
Add make-up and expert hair styling.
Retouch the photos.
Budget thousands for plastic surgery.
Schedule exactly the right kind of exercise and watch the diet like a hawk.
Keep trainers (people, not shoes) around the house.

Result - good looks. If they can keep off the booze and drugs.
=========
I saw a picture of Emmylou Harris today. She's 62. Looks 32, at least in the face. Picture of Dorian Gray, anyone?

Years ago I saw Paul Newman on TV at the age of 70. He was very handsome, but his face was as rigid as a sheet of plastic from all the facelifts. Me, I'll just keep my smile lines.

So we're saying we have to break their nose or poke an eye out so they can sing better?!? Maybe scar 'em up a little. Wow, that seems harsh, but everyone knows you can't be both good lookin' and talented.

It's a real shame for young and pretty singers who can sing well, play well, write good songs because they are really up against it: nobody will ever take them seriously and they will never get credit for success based on their talent. It's a curse, like having famous parents or being middle class, because there's nothing you can do about it. Be plain, dress badly, perform adequately and the folk scene will love you.

There's a simple physical explanation, but the causation is the opposite way round from the way people usually think.

When a good singer produces clear, focused tones, each lung radiates spherically. Over a period of time, this vibration migrates the subcutaneous tissues into a pair of symmetrical, globular forms. Meanwhile the lower partials associated with the diaphragm are channelled downwards and reflected by the pelvic bones to induce the development of similar forms lower down, on a larger scale because of the lower frequencies.

Sex sells that is the reason. all modern country music singer have sprayed on blue jeans and lots of halter top women ... I doubt we will ever see another Mamma Cass who could just belt out a song

There's no escaping the fact that here will always be actors and musicians who reach the financial stratosphere mainly on the strength of their physical appearance, chutzpah, a good agent and a willingness to do whatever they are told, good or bad, to remain a public "item." Most are packaged and delivered to non-discerning audiences programmed to receive them. If you aren't one of them, good for you. You have to do it with talent, devotion to your craft and a love of the performance and the music.

Ten years from now, if you are still actively performing, most folks won't remember the names of those others who were briefly famous for no apparent reason. In other words, don't get caught up in resenting what you can't do anything about. Just be yourself and keep moving ahead. After all, you're not ugly or ordinary-looking; you have character! Britney Spears will have sags and wrinkles and you'll still be good.

I took up guitar a few years ago in the hopes that I'd start to fit the stereotype. So far, not much luck.

Chris B - an occasional MC of my acquaintance will always finish the night with his latest discovery, who will always be young and female, and generally have big hair and googly eyes. To be fair, sometimes they're good singers as well.

There's a serious point here - I have had the feeling recently that some artists (not all by any means) are successful because of their looks rather than their talent. Twas ever thus in pop but until recently folk seemed immune.

I think it is great how many young people are doing well in the folk scene at the moment but I am equally worried about how some of the 'journeymen' (to quote Tom Bliss) may be being overshadowed & overlooked in the dash for youth.

I found that as I aged it allowed a much larger variety of women to look young and pretty. Some could sing as well.

You get the same at universities; the students get younger and prettier every year. When you notice the new lecturers doing the same, you know a lot of water has passed under a lot of bridges.

But I have taught my daughters to listen to TV music clips with their eyes closed if they want to judge the quality of the music separately from the soft porn.

Cheers, Rowan

I just got a newsletter about local(ish) folk (ish) star performances - not the workaday performers at local gig clubs, not the people who perform at gatherings, but the people who get paid pretty serious money to headline.

All the women are young and pretty.

Are we listening with our eyeballs or something?

Or are we not really listening at all?
