Subject: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 03 Apr 09 - 04:31 PM As a result of the demise of the Lancaster/Glasson Maritime festival, how will habitués be spending this Easter? In my case, after picking up my Czech partner up from Stansted, we will spend the rest of the weekend relaxing, and the rest of the week going out for day trips. After going there for 18 consecutive years, being in London felt a bit strange for the last two years. |
Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 04 Apr 09 - 07:36 AM This isn't a direct substitute, but there are good things happening at the Gosport & Fareham Easter Festival in Hampshire. Like all the best festivals it has concertina sessions, too - there's a separate thread on that subject. Valmai (Lewes) |

Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: vectis Date: 05 Apr 09 - 08:11 PM A lovely weekend away staying in a friends garden and singing in the garage. You better believe it! A smashing bank holiday weekend at a DIY mini fest. I always sing a shanty or two in memory. My friend and I started a female shanty duo (Magwitch) at what turned out to be the last Lancaster Shanty Festival. Pity about its demise. |

Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: SylviaN Date: 06 Apr 09 - 11:26 AM Keith and I are planning to spend the Saturday in Baccup - which Keith hasn't been able to do for years and years. We'll miss Lancaster, though - especially all our friends. Cheers and enjoy your Easter eggs. Sylvia |
Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: Mark Dowding Date: 06 Apr 09 - 12:08 PM Interesting that you mention Bacup Sylvia. Before Lancaster started Bacup was the place to be on Easter Saturday nominally to watch the Coconut Dancers. The pubs were packed with singers and musicans and a great time was had by all. I went for several years with various people - we even got a coach trip together one year from the Dicconson Arms folk club in West Lancashire so we could all have a drink. The year Lancaster started I went to Bacup with my Dad and the place was relatively empty - there were some musicians in the Queens but no singers. I never went again. Maybe it's time to revive the Bacup tradition on Easter Saturday! Cheers Mark |
Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 07 Apr 09 - 06:41 AM I think it was at Shotley in the early 80s that I got a lung infection which took me out of circulation for 2 or 3 months. Not very fond memories..... |

If you are in the Lancaster area on Goood Friday. Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: GUEST,SylviaN Date: 09 Apr 09 - 03:56 PM I'm terrible, Robin, I know, but I don't know the name of the pub where the session is - I think it's the Little Queens - anyone able to confirm. I know it's in the centre of the town - just follow the music. See you there. Cheers Sylvia and Keith |
Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: GUEST,Dixiedoll Date: 09 Apr 09 - 05:34 PM To put things in perspective, some years ago most of the cash allocated by the Arts Council for 'Lancashire', was spent in Lancaster and Morecambe. It was pressure by folk in the rest of Lancashire that enabled what cash was available to be spread to other events. |
Subject: RE: Life After Lancaster (maritime festival) From: Blowzabella Date: 09 Apr 09 - 06:47 PM The Lancaster Maritime Festival never had a penny from the Arts Council, Dixiedoll - it was funded by the City Council and private sector sponsorship. |
